I'm a lucky man

Posted May 26th, 2010 at 05:55 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I’ve always thought of small children as a form of Marr.
They’re sneaky, conniving and manipulative (mindshackle 3 anyone?)
They reach out for you with claw-like little hands and try to pull you into the leaky green diaper world that they inhabit. Their faces are drooly goo covered noise-making contraptions that stare and bite. And they snore.

My rampant three year old truly has a personality that is wild. He is old enough to speak, and he’s quite good at stringing together thoughts and concepts. For example, we were having a discussion about the women at his daycare. I asked him why there were no men there, to which he replied men don’t like daycare. The following conversation ensued:
ME: So what’s the difference between men and women anyway? How are boys and girls different?
3 year old: Women have long hair.
ME: You used to have long hair.
3 year old: (thoughtful silence) Girls wear pink.
ME: I...

Mage-ical Musings

Posted May 20th, 2010 at 05:01 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I have been resisting magic for a long time.
It is a hard thing to put out of your mind. Even if you think you’ve succeeded, suddenly there it is.
I talked to my children yesterday about their magical plans, getting it all straight in my head.

This morning I had strange nightmares. I usually wake when the light is blue- I don’t know why it shines blue in the early morning but it does. This morning I dreamt the alarm went off and when I grabbed the clock I crushed it. Or rather it disintegrated in my hand. I then went to open the curtain. But underneath the curtain was another curtain, and yet another, and still another. They curtains did not end. I marveled at this. And then woke up in my bed. And it was not time to get up.

Just a common dream you say? I generally never remember my dreams. I think it is a symptom of the magic that has infested my home.

At my house, Scape is never stagnant; it is an always...

Boating Weather

Posted May 15th, 2010 at 11:33 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
With the coming of spring and especially the nice warmer weather in our neck of the woods my family has returned to boating. We did a lot of boating last year, and then never went back to it. But it inspired us to include a lot more large water ways in our great big home made wall map that keeps track of our giant never-ending game.

There’s nothing like feeling the cool wind off the water, I think, as I set out for a nice day-trip to invade those islands I’ve always coveted. It’s not greed- those island are a valuable outpost and in the wrong hands it endangers everything I’ve built so far. I need them for security reasons.
I tried to negotiate with my eldest son- offering to buy them from him for 200 points, which admittedly, is only a small amount- but it’s better than risking an invasion, don’t you think?

But children will be children, stubbornly hanging on to areas they should cede to their elders.

My oldest son is...

Gotrek Versus Siggurd

Posted May 14th, 2010 at 10:48 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I have been slowly reading the Gotrek and Felix books, and for the most part enjoying them. They get better and better as you go. I’m actually a very fast reader but with laundry and dishes and meals and soccer and everything else that comes with four kids my free reading time is pretty much nonexistent. I’m lucky to read twenty pages a week.

But enough complaining!

If you don’t know, Gotrek Gurnisson is a dwarf slayer. As some point in the past he did something shameful and to atone for it he has become a slayer. In the cult of the slayer they shave their heads into orange Mohawks, get covered in blue tattoos and seek a heroic death. That heroic death is remembered instead of their ignominy.

Gotrek and Felix are a Warhammer novel series that follows the travels and battles of Gotrek in his quest for a demise worthy of remembering. Felix Jaegar is a human that follows Gotrek around, oath-bound to record the slayer’s death....

the connection

Posted May 12th, 2010 at 02:48 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I knew as soon as they walked in that they were looking for me. There were two of them, young, maybe 18, - I’d expected that- but they looked terrified. That I hadn’t expected. One of them was all puffed up- I’d say he was brought along as “security”. He was wearing a muscle shirt, even though it was pretty cold outside and he was more chubby than muscley. I wasn’t intimidated. I’ve changed diapers that were scarier than the pair of them.

I had them come to my workplace.
I was too untrusting to give them my home address.
I’d exchanged emails with Peter, setting up the purchase. I’d used a fake email and everything- yea, so maybe I’m a little paranoid. If you’d had the life I’ve had, you’d be too. The email exchange had left me uncomfortable. He either wasn’t good at email, or was up to something. My scam radar alarms were all going off.

It was Peter who spoke to the receptionist. I couldn’t hear the words but I heard the...
