So What Is Steamroller?

I have been all over Heroscapers blasting folks with Steamroller. Many of you are probably wondering what the heck is Steamroller? And an insignificant few of you are probably thinking STFU!

So anyway, I thought tonight, since I have relaxed with a glass or 3 of red wine, I would give in and let you all know what Steamroller is.

See when we are play-testing figures for Heroscape we like to try certain army builds. Some of these we build in an effort to break the system, and others we use as strong stable test choices that will create a decent challenge for any army. We like to give these armies nicknames.

When testing figures for Wave 9 there was a particular army design we like to call The Steamroller. The army got the name for two reasons.

1- This army build is powerful and can crush other armies if you're not careful. Steamroller!

2- When playing this army, it is beneficial to continually pull figures from the rear and move them to the front so that your entire army slowly rolls forward... Steamroller Baby!

Now my question is, can any of you tell me which figures in wave 9, if included in the right army, make up the Steamroller? C'mon ding-dongs! Who is gonna guess it right!

And it rocks; in testing only the most competitive of competitive armies could handle the Steamroller.

"And the people did cry out, for Sparticus was overpriced, and the high lords of 'Scape looked down and had pity on the fans. Then there was the sound of thunder and drums and trumpets as the Steamroller descended from the clouds..."

hmmmmm......I think it is also worth mentioning that the Capuans were developed at the same time as the Gladiator Heroes. Yes, that long ago. These guys have been on the books for years. They are not a fix to Spartacus because he was broken and someone messed up, but rather the completing component that has finally come out. (well almost out)

Yeah, Ry, that makes sense. I know the designers can't always price units perfectly, but for something as off-target as Sparticus...

I love how the gladiators are finally competative. Though this could break the "Steamroller" army completely depending on how the Capuan gladiators work, and since Crixus is put better than Retairius for competative armies then they might have just played him over Retairius, I wonder if the same army build with Retiarius instead of Crixus could work. Unless the slow-pace movement nicknamed "Steamroller" is some what added from Crixus's One Shield Defense ability.

Also, smart calculations ollie, they're a (if the total of the build posted is 500pt.) 70pt. common melee squad that seems to rock!

The squads are ok, but it is the army that rocks. The whole package

They are like Raelin. She sucks by herself but flourishes with the rest of the army.

I think he's saying the squad is decent in other armies but that specific build, "Steamroller", is where they really shine (not sure about the Retairius/Crixus swap deal).

And a lot of units suck on there own, like Gladiatrons, Blastatrons, Arrow Gruts, Raelin, Marcus Decimus Gallus, Deathreavers.......you need an army to play the game to look at units competatively.

Huh, sounds boring. I'm all for playing the same army a bunch of times (It's insane how many times I may palytest and army for a tournament) but having one cut-and-dry army? Bleh. I like units where you can tweak it slightly and still get a fun build.

At least with trons and knights you can alter how many of each squad and all...

The point which I think you're missing is that Heroscape has something for everyone and if it sounds boring to you, then by all means don't play it or buy it, but also to knock it either. It is a fun army to play and it is nice to be able to whip out a competitive army in a pinch without having to agonize over every little point.

Good points Grungebob. Truth be told, I'll probably play the army half a bigilion times before August ends.

I will have a lot of new units to work into builds anyway, so one "A+B=win" army doesn't bother me so much.

Oh yeah, and gladiators/Romans are one of my favorite themes too so...

I'm thinking for the Team Tourney, I'm taking Spartacus, Retarius, and Crixus, the loser version of the Gladiators, before SteamRoller is released.

GB, did you ever play more points, such as 510-550 trying out with fillers added into SteamRoller? Or would that just be overkill?

You also have to remember that (well this isn't a definite because we don't know the Capuan Gladiators yet, they could have something that grants bonuses for an all the same personality army or something that can break) Steamroller can most likely act as a core too. If your playing more than 500pt., and if the Steamroller Grungebob posted is 500pt., then you could tweak and modify the other additions to the core (such as, if you're playing 550pt., the last 50pt. you can toy around with).
