What about this Rules Team

Posted March 29th, 2009 at 11:24 AM by Grungebob
Ok, I thought I would hop on my blog and post about the Rules Team so that anybody who wants to know more about this process can just come here and read about it.

Who are we?
Well, the Rules Team is headed up informally by TheGuru. TheGuru, also known as Chris, has a long history of customer support work at Hasbro. He was in charge of making sure that questions sent in to Hasbro had accurate and quality answers. He also was in charge of FAQ content. TheGuru has developed systems to check each Heroscape figure for possible rules issues and wording problems. In answering questions sent in, TheGuru would confer with the actual designers of Heroscape. Now with WOTC in charge of Heroscape, any questions sent that do not get answered properly get recalled and fixed by TheGuru and the Rules Team. The Rules Team are a group of volunteers that have had a hand in Heroscape playtesting and quality assurance for some time. A wide variety of people are involved and the process is informal.

The Process:
When we see a question pop up on the forums are one that gets sent through WOTC and is too complex to solve in a quick response, (or gets botched by WOTC) we post a thread to our secret off site forum that has been in existence for some years now. We start by giving our gut instinct answer and work from there. In the recent grenade lob question, most of us imediately said NO to grenades lobbed under overhangs. But then we could not find anything that would allow is to prove our stance. We were forced to say YES to lobs based upon a literal interpretation of the rules.

The FAQs
As I have mentioned above, the FAQ's are compiled by TheGuru. If and when we get another chance to update FAQ's or consult on a new edition of the rules we can add the items that have been ruled on since the previous update. This usually happens in advance of Gencon so that our game masters have the most complete rules FAQ's.

What this means to players:
Well, this is a benefit for Heroscapers, because it means that if you are up to date on the forum topics, you are up to date on all rulings. It also means that if you have a formal question for Heroscape you can go directly to the folks who will likely end up answering it anyway if you were to send it in. it's a good deal

Thanks for giving us a behind-the-scenes tour, as it were. Having played, and chatted, with R˙chean, I knew that the Rules Team was an informal group made up of volunteers and that no one was getting paid for it.

I respect what you guys do, and my hat goes off that you guys do it day in and day out, with no reward or compensation other than personal satisfaction.

I hope knowing these things about you Rules' guys makes everyone have a better appreciation for what you do and then realize on top of that, that you don't even have to do it.

Kudos on a stellar job, Grungebob - you and all the Rules Team.

Now I can understand why there wasn't an "official" post about AE counting towards starting zone spaces back in 2007. You talking to 'your Hasbro contacts' was essentially the exact same thing as an e-mail to them, only faster.

One thing I've always liked about the game is the straightfoward nature of most of the rules. Good work, guys. 99.5% of rules questions that come up in games can be quickly determined by reading the offending cards or rulebook.

So, Human Gladiator Bonding- that works like regular bonding, correct?

Thanks to you and the gang for all your efforts over the years. I think they are a major factor in Heroscape being the stellar experience that it has become!

And I appreciate how generous you guys have been with previews lately. I worry that you'll get in trouble dancing on the edge sometimes--if I was a playtester with an NDA, I don't think I'd even want to mention it on this site...
