Soulrazor Hollow

Posted August 23rd, 2012 at 06:29 PM by AliasQTip
I know itís been a while since I posted a new battlefield for you all to check out. Actually I posted the last one way back in November. Has it really been that long? Now itís not that I donít have ideas, mind you. Itís just my interest in HeroScape has strayed a bit in the last few months and in the meantime Iíve been putting my focus on other projects. I have a habit of cycling through my vast list of hobbies and I think Iím once again returning to the game I love.

Iíve got some new maps to tease you with and hopefully mine some of your ideas to finish them off and produce some really great scenarios.

First up, a map that I first made and playtested several months ago but has only recently acquired a simple scenario. This one is probably closest to being done and thatís why itís being featured in this blog. Hopefully your HeroScape group will be playing this one very soon!

Soulrazor Hollow

Soulrazor Hollow Battlefield

Idea:
I wanted to create a ďtreasure grabĒ-type scenario that I could play with my wife and three children. It was to feature small adventuring parties (heroes only) that would descend into a large cavern room filled with wandering, respawning monsters. Grab some treasure, avoid the monsters, get to an exit, repeat.

Backstory:
I found a short blurb in the Compendium about a vast cave filled with tiny springs that Jandar himself found as a small child. Itís located near the Soulrazor Canyon in Southern Bleakwoode and seemed to fit well with my map concept.

Hereís the map description and scenario text as they currently read:
Near the Soulrazor Canyon in Lower Bleakwoode there exists a massive underground chamber. First discovered by Jandar himself as a youth, Soulrazor Hollow has become the haunt of terrifying creatures concealed in its shadowy depths.
---
Over the years, villages near Soulrazor Canyon have been plagued with night raids by gangs of rouge monsters. After pillaging the towns for any shiny treasure they can get their claws on, they retreat to the depths of Soulrazor Hollow, their subterranean abode.

In an effort to retrieve the stolen artifacts, several bands of foolhardy adventurers have chosen to descend into the hollow.
Scenario:
Itís been designed for 3 to 5 players. Player 1 handles the cave monsters (common figures only) and starts on any shadow spaces. Players 2-5 are the adventuring parties and start in any of the colored cave entrances. To all TheoryScape experts reading this blog: Any suggestions on Army sizes? Letís say, 600-points worth of monsters that respawn at the end of each round versus ???-points each worth of adventurers in a three player game? Four players? Five?

This is the formula I've used for multiple players against a single player: Take the number of points one of the multiple players has and multiply it by the total number of players. That's the point total the single player has.

For example: each of the multiple players gets 200 points. If there's 3 players total then the single player gets 600 points. It works well with 3. Not sure if the formula holds for more than that.

I've used that method in the past, quozl, to get the numbers pretty close. However, the fact that the monsters respawn at the end of the round means I'll have to drastically lower that player's army point value. Also the goal is not to rid the cave of monsters, just escape with the goods.

I'm thinking, a straight 600-points for the monsters with 16 start spaces total. The other players as follows...
  • In a 3 player game (2 vs 1), 400-points each.
  • 4 Players, 270-points each.
  • 5 Players, 200-points each.

Overall is like 600-points (respawning) vs approx 800-points.
