Scaper of the Week Interview # 65 -- peteparkerh

Scaper of the Week Interview #

Many will recongize him with his amazing Mines of Moria battlefield. Others known him as the Mayor of Scape City. And everyone thinks of Spider-Man when they see his name.

Say hello to this week's Scaper:

-Scaper of the Week # 65-

peteparkerh

Who are you?
Pete Thompson, husband and father of 2.

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
My avatar is a Knight of Weston with a New York Giants shield. The KOW are what really got me interested in the game.

As for my user id, it's peteparkerh. I used to work for the Parker Hannifin company and used this as a user id for work related boards. When I signed up here, I just used it, not thinking of the Spiderman implications. I'm really a Batman fan when it comes to superheroes.

Age:
42 and still playing kids games.

Occupation?
Metallurgical Engineer

Allegiance and why?
Jandar. I'm a boy scout at heart as well as a huge fan of the KoW, 4th Mass, and Sgt Drake (SOTM).

When did you get into HeroScape and why?
I bought it for my nephew for Christmas and my older daughter said "I would like that". She had her first ROTV set the next day.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
I love the miniatures and terrain. I've always been a lego fan, so this allowed me to keep "playing legos" at 40.

Favorite Unique Hero and why?
I really like playing Marcus. Him joined with the 4th mass, 10th foot, or Sgt Drake is a ball to play. That extra movement to all soldiers allows all those units to go on the extreme offensive.

Favorite Uncommon Hero and why?
The Ogre Warhulk. Man he is scary when he is coming for you. I also love that he can hit his own guys.

Favorite Common Hero and why
I love the whole firestorm concept. I just don't have enough fire to pull it off.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
You can never go wrong with the Krav.

Favorite Common Squad and why?
Knights of Weston as I have stated above. The sculps are so cool and detailed. Their game play being fairly balanced is a bonus as well.

Favorite Special Ability and why?
Drake's enhanced grappling gun. I'm not sure totally why, but every time I use it I find myself grinning.

Drow Chainfighter or Saghurain Raider?
Saghurain Raider, no question. Cool sculpt with theoretical injured hero killer capability.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
I wish we could re-point score units so they are more usable in tournaments. I know this idea is a little controversial, but I would love to see the day when the Snipers are brought in on BoV map and competitive.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
Met some great people that I now count as friends.

Favorite HeroScape moment:
Spidysox and I playing my Mines of Moria map with the Ogre Warhulk. I felt like I was in the middle of the Lord of the Rings movie.

Another board game you enjoy and why?
I've been playing Battlestar Galactica lately. Really fun cooperative game.

Three true things and one lie about yourself:
Since I look younger than I am, I've been carded buying gas, buying fireworks, buying superglue, and at the movies.

Other interests?
I write a yearly Vacation Bible School for about 1,000 kids. This year it is called ArmorQuest and will involve an 18 foot tall dragon.

Five Fun Favorites

Favorite TV Show: TopGear (British Car Show)

Favorite Movie Of All Time: Star Wars

Favorite book: After the Bible, any original Tom Clancy novel.

Favorite sport: NFL Football

Favorite food: Sushi

Your Mines of Moria Maps and Campaign are very cool. What inspired you to create them?
I've always like the Lord of the Rings movies. Helm's deep was a natural challenge. After this, Spidysox and I were talking about how hard Minas Tirith would be, so I took it on.

How did you get your title "Mayor of Scape City"?
Due to my leadership role of the Battlefield of Marvel (BoM).

Care to elaborate more on Metallurgy work? Have you ever thought of making Scape customs from metalworking?
Not in metal, but I have thought about using my knowledge of working with China Manufacturers to make some customs. I have one out for quote right now (a Knight riding an Eagle), but I would have to make 1,000. It would be Nilfheim size. Could we get that much interest?

I notice that you are a BoM Judge, yet no new BoM maps have been created lately. Are there any plans to get C3G maps entered into the BoM?
The BoM really lost momentum partially due to the C3G creation. I would invision that the BoM could be used as contest where we would pick a theme and have others compete for the best map in that theme.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
Outside of tournaments, I play most of my games against Spidysox, who is extremely challenging to play against. I also love playing against Tom and Arcus. If I could play against some others, I would really like to be involved in one of the Texas events.

What message do you have for the community?
We are a part of a dying animal here if we aren't careful. But I don't believe it has to be that way. I'm finding making custom figures is not that rough if we had enough people ganged together. I just don't know if we could get all of us to agree.

What Units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?
I don't really follow those threads. Sorry.

Do you plan to make any more SuperHero Destructible Object sets in the future? Or maybe release your past sets for sale?
I have a bunch of the items to make the previous sets. I just couldn't figure out a great way to bring them to market. I would love to keep doing this if someone else could help me with the sales part.

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
Spidysox

Now it seems the torch is being passed around the MD/PA/NJ scaper community. I've seen tom, peterparkerh, clancampell, and spidysox at tournaments in Baltimore.

Great interview of a deserving scaper. Pete's maps are truly beautiful and more importantly a joy to play. The first time we played the Moria campaign was an absolute ball.

Great interview, Pete (and Megasilver, doing a great job), I didn't even know you *could* be carded for buying most of those things.

Awesome Pete - congrats!

I'm with D_S - I didn't know that many things could get you carded. Then again, I haven't had hair for so long that I didn't get carded for stuff in high school.

The lie is definitely being carded at the movies. Having worked at two theatres, I have to say most of the high schoolers working there don't give a crap.
