Future Scaping Haven updated 6/20 on last page

I haven't been Scaping much lately for various reasons, but one of them is that I'm currently finishing my basement. Besides the extra time that it involves, I had to shelve my Scape stuff in order to make room for other stuff during this process.

I used to have several tables set up in the common unfinished portion of the basement, with maps set up for days or weeks at a time.

While I have already built a guest bedroom and office down there, it is now time to finish off the rest of it. It will have a "exercise room" at one end, a bathroom at the other end and a tv/seating area, gaming area and bar area in between.

Here's some pictures of the work in progress. I have it all studded and all the electrical ran. I have sconce lights for general/mood lighting (they are on dimmer switches), lights above the bar and back counter, and four can lights above the gaming area in the center of the common area (they offer great direct light for gaming and are also on dimmer switches).

Here's a view from near the bottom of the stairs looking toward the end where the "exercise room" will be on the other side of the stud wall. The tv/seating area will be on this side of the stud wall and the gaming area will be around where the black table is on the other side of the eliptical. My dog, Roman, is there as well.

The next shot is a closer look of where the "exercise room" will be. I have a couple pieces of drywall up on the lower sections of the exterior wall.

The next shot is from the stud wall where the tv/seating area is, looking toward the gaming area in the middle, the bar area at the other end and the doorway to the bathroom near the bar area.

This final shot is of the bathroom. It's drywalled and will get a drop ceiling.

Eventually this will be a great place to game and not be so darn cold in the winter. It will be pretty nice to have a place with a fridge nearby for Scaping beverages, a bathroom nearby for relieving oneself of the Scaping beverages and an "exercise room" nearby to work off frustrations of losing at Scape or other games

I don't know if this is easier to add to this entry or if I should make another entry for each update. Let me know what would be better for anyone reading and viewing this.

Anyway, here's some more pix.

Not much changed in the bathroom, just got it taped and mudded since the previous picture.

Here's the long view from bar area, across common area and looking toward "exercise room".

Here's the closer view of the tv wall that now has drywall on the other side of it. I clean up some of the wire mess that was there previously and added a shaft tube in case I ever get a flatscreen tv to mount on the wall and I can run the wires from below up through the shaft tube and not have them dangling down the outside of the wall.

Here's a shot from the doorway going into the "exercise room". I obviously have it drywalled, taped and mudded. If I have the time today before guests come over for Mother's Day, I may sand and prime the walls. We'll see

This is a shot from inside the room, looking toward the closet and entry door. I put a closet in the room in case it ever needs to be made a bedroom. The door is kind of crappy, but I bought it a long time ago for something else and figured it would be okay for a closet door. The rest of the doors are going to be six-panel and painted white to go along with the trim.

WOW Hahma, looks great!
I'm amazed at your construction skills (I'm still scraping my jaw off the floor after seeing that grandiose swing set you put together!)!
What a place to hang out with friends or alone and immerse one's self in all things 'Scape.
Very nice work.

Keep us updated!

Thanks fellas. I'll keep posting the progress, though I think it will go in spurts as energy and time allow.

The good thing about being in the trades (painter), I've worked a lot with other trades over the years on commercial and residential projects, both new construction and remodels. So I've paid attention over the past 16 years and won't hesitate to ask questions of other trades. There is also books that I buy to help me figure some stuff out. Last year I spent six months of weekends and even took a week or two off work to rehab my mother-in-law's house after she passed away. I learned a lot on that project, especially that when working on an 80+ year-old house, nothing really goes the way it's supposed to. You find all kinds of surprises.

If I could afford to have someone else take care of it, I probably would, but since that's not the case, I have to do as much myself as possible. I tied some of the electrical circuits into previous ones that I installed for the office and spare bedroom, but I had to add six more circuits for some other things and ran them out to the panel box. I paid an electrician $100 (for the hour it took him) to hook them into the panel box because I didn't want to get fried. Otherwise, I did all the electric. I had to get a plumber to tie into the existing water lines and stub them out of the wall as well as install a new vent line and install a ejector pump. That set me back $820 for a day's work for the plumber, ouch! Now you can see why I want to do about 90% of the work myself.

By the way HEH, the swing set is still standing and has been well used. Very much worth the $$ and 30 hours it took me to assemble it. But I hope not to have to do it again any time soon

Hahma, my wife's brother is a pipe fitter.
He's always tearing something up and remodeling.
Same thing - his work overlaps with other trades, so he has a lot of experience and connections when it's time to wire the house or tile this or that.
He pays them or does a pipe fitting job for them in some capacity.

30 hours to construct the swing set - oof!
That would've taken me three times as long!

Keep us posted with more pictures!

Progress up to 5/19/08

I had tried to edit my first post to keep the updates there, but didn't seem to work out so I'm going to put the updated pix here.

The first shot is obviously the bathroom. Sanded the drywall, primed it and painted it a light yellow. The window kind of messes with the lighting, maybe next time I'll take the picture at night. Next steps are to install the drop ceiling, the tile floor, the door, trim and then get the plumber back to set the pedistal sink and toilet.

Next shot is the "exercise" room. Walls have been sanded and primed and the ceiling has two coats of finish paint on it.

That's me, after I painted two walls with a fist coat of an off white.

I installed the light fixture and added an accecnt color to two walls. This color may not be the final one, but I had a gallon of the off-white and this darker color left over from a job and I'm being cheap by trying to use them here. Heck, they were nearly $30/gal, I hate to waste them sitting around on the shelf. The closet door will get primed and painted white with the trim. Other doors in the basement will be six panel. This one was left over from something else and I figured it would be good enough for a closet.

This shot is toward where the entry door will go. Obviously the two darker accent walls are adjacent as are the two lighter ones, as opposed to them being on accros from one another.

Next step is to get the carpet in, entry door in, trim installed and painted and then second coat the walls.

Thanks Menchy

The wife and I just paid off what we had on the Lowe's card (which I buy just about everything from for this project) and yesterday I put a WHOLE lot more back on the card because this weekend they had a 0% interest for 12 months thing going on when you buy more than $299 on the card. I figured that besides what we pay monthly on the card, we can make sure we pay it off in 12 months if we have to use some of our tax return next year to do it. I did this with buying my laptop from Circuit City and buying a bunch of stuff from Home Depot when I started my business. Taking advantage of the 0% interest promotions are HUGE and just like paying cash, but ONLY if you pay it off in time.

So yesterday I got some carpet for the exercise room, a few pre-hung doors, 300sqft of tile for the bathroom and bar area floor, morter, grout, some baseboard and some door casing.

That freaking tile is heavy, I had to make 18 trips from the trailer down to my basement with the darn stuff. They're 13"x13" in dimension and come 14 to a box. There were 18 boxes and they kicked my behind by the time I was done.

I might try to get the carpet in today, we'll see.

Exercise room is finally done!

Well, I finally got the exercise room portion of the basement done, except for a couple door knobs. I finished it this morning and the wife helped me move the equipment in. The room isn't that big, 10' wide by 12' long, but it does the job for the equipment we have.

These two shots are from the doorway looking to the right. We have the eliptical at the end, boflex in the middle and a funky old stationary bike to the left .

This shot is from the wall with the eliptical, looking toward the wall with the doorway in the corner to the left and the closet to the right.

Finally, this one is from near the closet to the opposite wall.

Now that that stuff is out of the common room, I can slide the bar over and get some tile down that will be in the bar area and go into the bathroom. Then I can put doors/trim in the bathroom, paint it again and call the plumber to set the fixtures. Then I can get to work on the common area. Only having weekends to get the bulk of the work done, it will take a while to finish it up, but I'll post my progress.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Looks good, Hahma!

Too bad your boys are so young, or maybe you'd be able to get their help! I'm not sure if my dad ever did anything quite this ambitious, but he always had my brother and I help him when he did this kind of thing.

It's been awhile since you've posted in here. How's the project come along?
