Colleges, Careers, and Friendships...

Posted September 12th, 2010 at 09:18 PM by tcglkn
Well its that crazy time of year for Seniors everywhere. We have to decide where we want to go to college and start applying. I am still undecided. I have two major options right now: Appalachian State University and Liberty University. I am leaning heavily towards going to ASU because I love the campus and the school is very good. (Plenty of pretty girls )

I've also got to start deciding what I want to do with my life. I'm leaning towards Graphic Design because I love photography, and I love computer stuff like Photoshop. So that would be the ideal major. But I am also considering going into Communications and trying to get a job at a church or something as a Technical Producer. (I volunteer at my church right now and it keeps me pretty busy) I like that sort of thing and I think a Communications degree would help me be able to better present things to communicate the Message to people.

I'm also going through a rough time with my friends. I really liked this girl at my church, but one of my "best friends" decided to show off his skills and how he could pick up any girl he wanted and for some stupid reason he took the girl I liked. (And yes he knew I liked her) BUT even worse than that, the other day, he had the audacity to start making out with her in front of me. <end rant>

Sorry I just needed to vent some stress. (On top of all this I just got my first job a few days ago and am really stressed out.)

I applied to 7 schools I would suggest going to a school more than 3 hours away-you'll discover a lot more independence at college and it's nice to be able to participate without mom and dad dropping by every weekend. Communications usually doesn't have that many requirements (my school doesn't have graphic design, so idk about that) so I would also suggest trying some new subjects out, like economics or programming-things that many high schools don't really teach (plus programming could come in handy for a Technical Producer).

And HS drama is always lame. It won't matter much in a few years, maybe even a few months.

Back in the Seventies, my Mom found out about a computerized college survey run by the publisher Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, where you could choose the parameters of the school and find out about schools which were what you were looking for. You could ask about all over the USA or only your local area. I imagine what they have today is much more sophisticated. So if you haven't thought about this kind of thing, you might want to investigate it on the net!

Your friend has issues. But then, so do we all. I hope you find friends later on who have more advanced ideas of friendship--especially in a church community! For now: seperate, observe, and learn.

Most importantly, you should check out Colleges that play Heroscape. I think this is the first discriminator between a good college and a bad one.

More seriously, look around a lot, think about what you want from a college and visit as many as you can. I'm happy to talk to you about the college I work at which is well worth considering if issues such as small classes, self-designed curriculum, need to be passionate about your subject, broad study are on your list of desirable traits. While we don't offer communications as a degree in itself, the flexibility we have would let you pursue the goals you list under some combination of Visual Arts, Computer Science and Photography (it's usual for students to have multiple degree fields, but it doesn't imply triple major if you work in all three).

There's more advice in this thread.

Thank guys.
@ S1R_ART0R1US: I am actually currently taking Computer Programming at my local community college. And I am going to visit a school out in Tennessee about 10 hours away from home. Honestly I think an hour and a half is far enough from home. I think my parents will give me some space or I'll say something.

@chas: I have done a few surveys like that, but nothing solid has come from them.

@ollie: I might go to a college that DOESN'T play scape in order to be a scape missionary. Spread the scaping love!

I applied to all 5 Federal Service Academies, so I can't offer any help in your form of major, but I can definitely say, get your stuff in as soon as possible.

Economics is an amazing subject to understand, and I suggest to get a foundation in this if you want any future career in business/marketing
Just like F.A Hayek once said:
"The curious tasks of economists is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design."

As for your female friend, you'll be surprised how fast that wears off, and you'll find a new one. Don't lose hope, you'll go through alot before the perfect one.

And good luck with the new job!! Just do what your told and you should be fine
