Heroscapers.com Wave D1 Preview Week 3

Posted February 24th, 2010 at 02:26 AM by truth
Heroscape Wednesday is upon us!

This is Week 3 in our Heroscape Champions of the Forgotten Realms previews. Check out Weeks 1 and 2 below.

Week 1: http://www.heroscapers.com/community/blog.php?b=1078

Week 2: http://www.heroscapers.com/community/blog.php?b=1098

Week 3: http://www.heroscapers.com/community/blog.php?b=1107

Champions of the Forgotten Realms is going to include 20 Figures, 4 Treasure Glyphs, and a ton of fun in the 4 small expansion packs.

Last week we discussed the Fury of the Primordials pack and had a sneak peek into Wave D2. This week we’re going to focus on the Warriors of the Ghostlight Fen pack, which is the last of the Common/Uncommon packs. Next week we’ll go over all the Uniques in the Heroes of Faerun pack.

Included in this pack are 5 Figures and 1 Treasure Glyph.

Treasure Glyph: Ring of Protection

Our next Temporary Treasure Glyph is the Ring of Protection, which is a really exciting Glyph. You know that point in every game, when your strategy is circling the drain, your opponent declares an attack that is going to ruin all your chances and start a wave of unstoppable force? THAT is when you break out the Ring of Protection. For one attack, as a desperate attempt to stave off disaster, you can use this glyph to add 3 dice to your defense roll, after your opponent rolls attack dice. Take that Jotun!

There are 5 figures in the Warriors of Ghostlight Fen expansion pack. As most of you assumed, we have the Fen Hydra, but we also have a Sahuagin Raider and a squad of tormented Phantom Knights. All are Utgar’s minions.

Fen Hydra-Uncommon Hero:

Here it is. Big Bertha. The Fen Hydra sends those Heroes that can’t take the pressure running home to mommy. The Hydra clocks in with a massive beginning attack value of 4 attacks at 4 each. To add insult to injury (usually literally) it also has a REACH ability that allows it to attack out at 2 spaces within certain vertical limitations. However, the Hydra’s weakness is its HYDRA HEADS. For every wound the Hydra takes, it loses one of its attacks. When you have the Hydra down to 1 life, it only gets 1 attack, since it only has 1 head left. All in all a VERY scary opponent and a fun figure to play, but a good strategy and a hearty tank will help your army prevail against even the most dangerous of foes!

Sahuagin Raider-Common Hero:

The Sahuagin Raider is our next entry in our continuing influx of Common Heroes to fill out armies. The Sahuagin is a deadly raider that lurks near the water’s edge and strikes out to attack! With his BLOOD FRENZY, he’s a great figure to hide in shadows and jump out to strike in the middle of a round, after you’ve done some damage on a strong Hero.

Phantom Knights-Common Squad:

The Phantom Knights are a new squad for Utgar. They were righteous knights in a previous life, but are tormented by their new ethereal form. With STEALTH FLYING and INSUBSTANTIAL 3, they can fly around the battlefield, almost invisible to any ranged attacks, and strike with height when they find their chance. But they haven’t truly forgotten who they once were. As such, they are still KNIGHTS and will help to bolster Sir Dupuis if they happen to be drafted together.

And here are a few close up shots on the Phantom Knights. These figures really have to be seen in person to get a good feel for how cool they look!

River of Blood-Room 2:

Last week we discussed the Campaign rules for the River of Blood and looked at Room 1. Today we’ll look at Room 2.

Room 2- The Hydra’s Lair:

Player 1 steps into Room 2 with his wounded figures healed and the destroyed figures stabilized by Second Wind. They look off into the distance to see a Hydra standing atop its lair, with its minions down below.

Player 2 drafts a 300 point Army that must include only 1 Fen Hydra.

2 new components are introduced in this room based on the rapidly flowing river on the right.

Rapid River: At the end of each Round including the first, take each Treasure Glyph that is on a water space and move it one water space closer to Player 1's starting zone, if possible. A Glyph will travel off of, or onto a space a figure occupies, but it will not move if the next water space is currently a non-water space (for example, an ice space created by a Greater Ice Elemental). If a Glyph is on the last water space in Room 2 when Rapid River activates, it is taken off the board.

Treasure Glyph Trap: On a roll of 1-5, do not reveal the Treasure Glyph. Instead, the Hero is sucked under the water and pulled with the current (see Water Current below). On a roll of 6 or higher, reveal the Treasure Glyph and place it on that Hero’s Army Card.

Water Current: Immediately move that Hero along the River of Blood towards Player 1’s starting zone until it either:

A) The Hero is placed onto a non-water space (for example, an ice space created by a Greater Ice Elemental).
B) The Hero would have to move onto a space occupied by another figure.
C) The Hero reaches the last water space in Room 2.

The moved Hero does not take any leaving engagement attacks while moving along the river, nor does it stop or trigger any powers based on movement until it reaches one of the above conditions.

So that’s it for the Warriors of Ghostlight Fen pack and Room 2 for the River of Blood! Start printing out those cards and getting some mock battles in with the placeholder figures! We’ll see you back here next Wednesday for the final pack preview, and a look at Room 3 of the River of Blood!

Good Gaming!

Step on it! Step on that Hydra, before it gets to the childern! Nasty Nasty critter. I wouldn't like to get even close to that thing. It looks like a tough nut to crack. Employing 2 sets of stingers as a counter to it will probably do. Spread them out, and laugh as they waste 3 of there attacks because they have no one to attack, then feed him another and blaast at range. Easily done with Protectors too. Or if they disengage, let them lose one of their heads. This will probably love rats.

Hydra seems cool - not as scary as I'd thought it would be based on playtester hype but it definitely seems extremely capable.

Love the Sahaugin (wish it had a better attack but not everything can be 3's and 4's.

Finally, I really, REALLY love the Phantom knights! Wow!

And all the figures in here look great from a sculpting perspective AND with their paint-jobs. Well done production crew!!

I was really not liking the Phantom Knights the first time I saw them. But these new photos definantly have me thinking better of them. Now I just need to figure out how many of each set to get. Hum, hum...

And about these awesome new units. All kudos to the design crew, especially for including figures that have terrain dependent abilities.

So those of you who hate D&D'scape. Did you notice something? With this new direction comes many units (raider, elementals) which have terrain-specific bonuses. I think that back in the pre-D&D days the game was suffering from a unstated bias towards the tournament meta-game. Now the designers are having a little more fun! And so will I be! As soon as I get these guys.

And wait until the Phantom Knigths hit the tournament meta-game, the ultimate anti-range squad! Buy three now! (But watch out for the firestorm, the ultimate anti-PK draft.)

I really like the Hydra. I don't see why every common hero has to be 25 points and follow Utgar. Yes we needed more common hero's but in effect we will still have the same as we had before this wave.

Wow, that was surprisingly early. My girlfriend just called me while I was casually browsing the internet. I had to ask her to call back later, when I saw this preview. He he...

The Hydra looks both cool and well balanced.
The Raider is a welcome low cost unit. Looks like it can be quite useful. Anything at that cost level is a welcome distraction from Isamu.
The knight are fearsome. Nice touch with the bonding to Sir Dupuis.

Hydra is sweet. There's not too many units that can attack four times. And units that help the opposite teams army, nice touch. all in all, i like the figures

*Who needs sleep? The funny thing is, my Good Forces just kicked Utgar butt on the Swamp Thing map yesterday! Guess who's showing up to get revenge today? Yeah, baby!!!

*Congratulations to those of you players who just about nailed the Hydra's abilities down, thanks to staff hints. Hail Hydra! Immortal Hydra! We shall never be destroyed! Cut off a limb, and two more shall take its place! We serve none but the Master, as the world shall soon serve us! Hail Hydra! (Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #1) Consider the lawn mowed...

*A walking pirahna--I like it. Now where did I get the idea that it was a 'Ranger,' rather than a 'Raider?' And they travel in schools...

*Its The Phantom Menace! Take that, Ranged Units! And pumping up an Old Guy is the best news that can be!

*Great imagination on the river. Since MS3, its really been a Renaissance of Official Scenario Designing, which should not go unnoticed in all the excitement.

*What a Wave! I'm wearing out the Exclamation Point key..!

The Sahuagin Raider looks awsome. I think he just became one of my favorite sculpts! I liked the Knights before and still do. The close up shots show that they have nice detail. As far as the Hydra what more can I say than wow. Great work guys! Now I have to go spend some more money.
