D&D Heroscape is GREAT (Heroscape is back pt 2)

Posted June 19th, 2011 at 09:02 AM by NamibianScaper
Forgive me while I live a couple of years in the past since our 'Scape just came out of a "scape purgatory" stuck on another continent.

We played our first game of 'Scape with a bunch of D&D figures and they are great. No time or desire to go as in depth as I used to about fine details and important issues as sculpt proportions, etc. but I have several comments I will now list out at random.

The new bases are the best. Okay we didn't try any of the new "BIG" round bases but the little petite perfect round bases are the best of the series. I missed whatever the final community verdict was on these, whether good or bad, but I know the initial reaction was to rebel. I can now weigh in and say they are my favorite. They fit so much better and highlight the figure, more like an actual stand which is supposed to go unnoticed, and not a personal flying saucer. The only thing bad is they make me look at the old bases and wish they were also shrunk with straight edges.

This site is great, Auggies Games, for picking and choosing your collection and not wasting money. I went back on my strategic plan to ignore D&D scape existed. Now I'm just ignoring Valkrill exists, and passing over a few undesirable figures. MiniatureMarket deserves a mention as well.

The uncommon heroes make sense for D&D. I remember playing Baldur's Gate II once upon a time and you would open a dungeon door to a room of 10 or so similar looking monsters. But not so much for Heroscape, I guess until your paradigm changes. I am using it for the Wyverns (have 2) because they just look good stalking a canyon together, but treating the rest as unique heroes (have 1 of the ones we have).

Only one lame figure so far - Erevan Sunwhatever - Compare to a simple squad of 4th mass. At how many attacks does his point cost become worth it and what are the odds of hitting those? I'll try him on a map where he can fey step out of everyone's reach but until then, or until I change his card for the better, he'll remain just a cool sculpt that "has his powers showing." haha, I came across the old comment by the guy who didn't like that a few days ago. Still great in my book. Multiple good powers showing in D&D.

Eltahale is the best. Wow, a figure like that who turns into a bolt of lightning. Thunder Step was the finishing move against a nasty Sujoah the other night, followed by a game concession. She is cool and style points count! and as the testing goes on I'll probably post in her 'book' comparisons to Nilfheim, since I had fun doing that with the firepower elves. Still trying to figure out exactly what a Goliath is in Toril. She has not and probably will not replace that picture of Goliath in my head from the Bible. It's not specific on facial features or anything but he's bigger, in Philstine garb, and got a rock stuck in his head.

Much less tiles & figures with Master Set 3. We got spoiled with RotV and SotM huh? All good stuff though in Master Set 3 and it seems like the scenarios were better, though I never played them. Not sure if treasure glyphs will make it into our game yet. I'm thinking maybe one low point team gets all the treasure to take on a team of big bad guys.

Warforged - These guys are very nice. I got the heroes and 1 squad in case somebody wanted a filler blocker they would do okay, but had no idea how sweet they would look.

Couldn't get Darrak Ambershard's backstab to crit on Sujoah, ack, wrong game, I mean roll skulls.

No comments on the Hydra? Just from what I've noticed it seems that the Hydra has gotten the most love from the community.

I love the new bases too, so you're not alone there. I still don't see the difference between "DnD" and "classic", so I can't really comment there though. They're all Heroscape to me.

Waves 11 & 12 were two of the best 4 or 5 of the whole game, in my humble opinion, and I love the Wave 13 Death Chasers.

It was a shame to say goodbye to the cowboys, robots and aliens, though...
