Romans Rock Again!

On Wednesday, 11/6/13, it will be another Roman Holiday for me, as I will be spending the day at chas' Game Palace with the rest of the Gang of Four to play THE HILLS ARE ALIVE! A Halloween Heroscape Scenario. Naturally, I'll be fielding a Roman army. The release of the new C3V Exclusive [VC?] Azure Warlord, and my imminent acquisition of same [Thanks, again, nyys; please rush that out to me ASAP!] (hopefully before the 11th ), have got me all hot & bothered about them again [Sorry, Knights (most recently acquired - again, thanks, nyys ). Below is a brief treatise of my historical and personal impressions of them - suitably spoilered [Why can't I produce single spoilers? ] for those who know everything about them. Please feel free to fill the truck-wide holes with your comments.

RoninValentina on her GenCon army (in response to her general request) and preparing for that year's Islandscape, although I eventually decided against fielding them (see The Roman Army . . . Not Today and Islandscape '09 Reflections). In 2009, the Legionnaires' Power Ranking was an "A" (still reflected in their Book). In 2010, we have: "Roman Legionnaires- Much like the Arrow Gruts, this isn't so much an indictment of the Romans as a growing sense that there are other options that aren't as clunky to play. MBS still rocks, but there are more disciplined units all the time, making the SB more comparable. A- to B+." [I don't know when or how they became "A-" - the appearance of Zelrig, perhaps?] Blended armies, featuring Romans and the 10th Reg., were popular, but being replaced with homogeneous 10th builds.

A lot of water has flowed through the aqueduct since then (with a significant number of games fielding Romans - too many blog entries to list). New Warlords - Mogrimm, and the brand new Azure Warlord (ah, if only he were Large, but that's for another day) - have appeared. Myrddin adds value to the aforementioned Mogrimm, as well as to those old standbys, Ne-Gok-Sa and Me-Burq-Sa, as well as providing a relatively inexpensive explosion-type Special Attack. The flip-side is the addition of several explosion-type Special Attackers - Myrddin most recently, but also Heirloom and, of course, Zelrig. And now we have the Cathar Spearmen, another set of Soldiers available to be played with Romans, but favored, like the 10th, to be played without them.

I know they have fallen out of favor in the tournament scene, but has anyone played them in tournament recently? I could see them doing well in the Louisville Monthly Tourney -- Nov. 9th -- Warriors Clash!!! . I can see it all now . . . [cue dream music]

Kolakoski, fielding a Roman army, unfortunately not featuring the newly released Azure Warlord, took home the Warriors Clash trophy.

With a seemingly Lodin'd 20-Sider, and key assists from Myrddin, Kolakoski Paralyzed and Mind Shackled his opponents into submission. . . .

"It was Ne-Gok-Sa's rallying cry early in Game 3 'We don't need no stinkin' sorcerers,' after Myrddy was hit hard and taken out, that was the turning point, and propelled us to the Championship . . . "
