How I would write Star Wars IX

Posted June 3rd, 2019 at 07:34 PM by The Grim Reaper's Friend
I try to keep an optimistic attitude about Star Wars. The last two films have been... well not that great. I know some people loved them, and I wish I could say the same, but it is regrettably not true.

Episode VII felt like JJ was being super cautious, keeping things open-ended and following a pre-proven plot from A New Hope. The similarities were palpable.

Episode VIII I actually greatly disliked. It didn't feel like a Star Wars movie, and it felt like Ryan Johnson was deliberately taking the fans' expectations and throwing them in our collective faces while trying to feed us twists which destroyed everything good in the most pointless manner possible. Luke throwing the lightsaber, Snoke's death, that kind of thing. It was just bad.

However, as I said I try to remain optimistic. I feel like JJ understands what Star Wars is all about, and how it should end, and is genuinely trying to do his best to deliver on that and on everything the fans want. I don't expect the movie to be spectacular, but I expect it to at least be decently good.

However, I have some friends who disagree. I recently moved, and while I was stuck in a car for six hours, we had an extensive conversation via text. They said the trilogy was sunk. Even if JJ knew what he was doing - which they questioned - they maintained that there was no way the trilogy could be saved with only one movie to go. One of them made the fatal error of asking me what I would do if Kathleen Kennedy came to me and asked me to take the reigns on Episode IX.

So I obliged and told him my version.

Below, I am going to copy my text. Before I do so however, I should tell you a few things. It was written within the span of about five minutes. There are obvious plot holes and discrepancies which I did not bother trying to fix. Also, parts of it are based on theories I've heard from Star Wars Theory on YouTube (Highly recommend it for any Star Wars fan), as well as some of my own speculations. The rest is pure on the spur of the moment ideas. The text starts as a sort of list of improvements and fixes. I've edited a few things.

Spoiler Alert!

I'm just curious to see what you think of this version of Episode IX, whether or not you liked the last two movies.

I don't want a big debate on Star Wars - we have enough of those already. I just wanted to share my thoughts and see what you thought. Would you pay to see this? Do you think it would be the worst SW movie to date? Let me know.

P.S. There will be an update on my fan fiction coming in the next few days. Stay tuned.

Your proposed Ep IX idea is actually one of the better ones I've heard as it recontextualizes a lot of these unanswered questions without actually retconning too much. And it would have stakes, which I assure you will be lacking in the real Ep IX.

Force Awakens I gave a pass because it was a good time to play it safe, and all of its problems could be fixed by future installments. Could be.

The Last Jedi is the antithesis of everything I value as a writer. There are very few subjects where I could unironically say every single thing is wrong, but there you have it. There have been bad Star Wars movies for a long time, but this was the one that made me stop caring about the property altogether. How subversive!

Rise of Skywalker is going to be an embarrassing disaster. It might be okay at best, but the entire production is mired in desperation after the reception of the last few SW flicks. And with the writer of cinematic masterpieces Batman v Superman and Justice League at the helm, co-written by the geniuses who penned Jurassic World II, I'm not exactly holding out hope for this one.

Anyhow, good to have you back.

Not a bad proposal and while there are some holes in the plot a solid writer could cover them or at least hide them in the details...good thoughts.

As for the Force Awakens...it was good to see an updated version of the original. But let's be honest...it wasn't as good because we'd seen it all before.

I actually enjoyed The Last Jedi...it was not what I expected from a Star Wars movie and to me that's a good sign. Not a great movie because of the normal issue that most new Star Wars movies have (mentioned below) but it was all right.

The worst thing that Rise of Skywalker could do is to try and outdo Star Wars. They've been attempting that since the Return of the Jedi and have failed each time (including LJ). What's needed is a character that people care about rather than just rehashing old characters or killing them off.
