'Scaper-of-the-Month #84 - mac122

Posted October 17th, 2012 at 03:09 PM by AliasQTip

'Scaper-of-the-Month #84 is...
mac122

PROFILE:

Who are you, really?
Todd Wagener. Husband to Kim for 22 years. Father to Tyler, 21, Stephanie, 18, and Kyle, 8.
Kyle, Kim, and Stephanie at the US Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH.

How old are you?
48. Alright, I've answered your question, now... get off my lawn!

What is your occupation?
Space Management Category Analyst. I create floorplan layouts and planograms for a national grocery store chain.

What other interests do you have?
Family, church activities, aviation, history

What’s another board game you enjoy and why?
Favorite I rarely get to play: Trivial Pursuit
Otherwise, the standard board games that can be played with one of the kids or the whole family: Monopoly, Life, Checkers, Othello, etc.

Who, or what, is you avatar and how did you come up with your username?
Right now, my avatar is one of the logos I created for the HoSS project. Previously, it was an F-4 Phantom I photographed at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center in Washington, DC. My user name is actually the initials for McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and my birthday, 1-22. My dad helped build fighter aircraft at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. I started using "mac" as my initials on the "High Score" board on video games (it seemed much less boring than "tgw"). Now, it's a sort of homage to my Dad, too. I borrowed part of the McDonnell Douglas logo for my "signature".

HEROSCAPE:

When and how did you first get into HeroScape?
I had seen Heroscape at a friends house in around 2006, but didn't think much of the game. In watching my friend's kids play, it seemed like whoever had the dragon, won. In the fall of 2008, my church held a silent auction to help fund a building project. Someone had donated a box of Heroscape. I put a $10 bid on it thinking it might be something fun for me and my younger son. The box included an RotV, a fortress set and a few expansion figures. When I read the instructions, I realized that my friend's kids had been playing by their own rules. Once I saw how the game was intended to be played, I was hooked.

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
The mix of genres: Robots fighting Knights fighting Samurai fighting Zombies fighting... what's not to love? It really plays into your imagination which leads to adding your own favorite characters into the mix.

To whom is your allegiance and why?
Sadly, I'm a player without a general. Until recently, I followed Vydar. He had the coolest units, IMO, with the Majors and the Agents. And, while he wasn't as pure as the driven snow, he was fighting along side the other noble generals. His treachery in the last official scenario has left me disillusioned and searching . I'm torn between Jandar and Einar

Who are your favorite heroes and why?
Unique: Kaemon Awa. Great sculpt and a ton of fun to play.
Uncommon: Fen Hydra. Another great sculpt and card design to match - get a wound, lose a head, lose an attack - brilliant!
Common: Blue Wyrmling. Lot of fun to play.

What are your favorite squads and why?
Unique: Airborne Elite. Great risk vs. reward aspect - will you get your grenades into play before your opponent wipes them out.
Common: 4th Massachusetts Line. Heroes of the Revolutionary War! And a part of my favorite Heroscape moment (see below).

What is your favorite Special Ability and why?
Tactical Switch really adds a dynamic flow to the battle. Forcing your opponent's figure to give up its advantageous position just before attacking is...sweet.

What is your favorite map and why?
This is a tough one. From the BoV, Broken Skyline has always been one of my favorites. Lots of LOS blockers and just enough height to fight over. Of the casual maps, I'd have to say either Lamaclown's Trinity Bridges or Dignan's the Dam Ruins. Both are beautifully put together with tons of elevation changes and LOS blockers.

Of your own custom creations, which unit is your favorite?
Another tough one. I guess it would be the Akkylannie Lancers. They're alot of fun to play - very dynamic.

COMMUNITY:

What do you enjoy most about HeroScapers.com?
Working on group projects. I've been in HoSS for quite a while but have also spent time working on Project Pokemon, TrekScape, and Heroes of Fiction. When time permits, I also enjoy making cards for other Scapers through the MCC.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.
While playing Warrior of Eberon at a casual Scape day, my 4th Mass knocked out his Cyprien by the second round. The look on his face was priceless. He still came back and won the game, but he really had to earn it!

Tell us about Heroes of StarWars Scape (HoSS) and your role in the group.
I've been a Star Wars fan since I read the book and saw the movie in Junior High. I was following the Star Wars Customs thread before it was called HoSS (HoSS still makes me think of the big guy on Bonanza ). I started posting a few questions and suggestions and ran a few small scale tests of some designs. I guess the founding members realized I wasn't going away, so they let me join the group. Soon afterward, I was added into the design rotation. About a year ago, Granite-M, who had been creating the cards for the group stepped down and I took over as "Art Director". Using the template originally designed by A3n, and with some input from the group, I've created a set of card blanks, one for each of the different factions, as well as glyph and destructible objects. I've also designed a variety of card backs spanning the 6 movies and some of the expanded universe. I'm looking forward to when we've completed playtesting on the cards from Episode IV and can have an "official" release to the community. I've also been tinkering with some other projects, including starship corridor wall panels using AliasQTip's pattern. Lot's of good stuff coming for HoSS.

Is there any member of HeroScapers.com you’d really like to play against?
Sounds like Porkins has thrown down the gauntlet and I have to agree it would be great to have a chance to play against him. The Scaper I'd most like to meet and play against is Lamaclown. He's one of the nicest people I've met on here and one of the most creative.

UNIT DEBATE:

Which unit would you say is better: Arrow Gruts or Roman Archers?
Roman Archers. Depending on terrain, Arrow Volley can be tough to pull off, but can be devastating to your opponent's heroes.

What two units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?
Have to admit I haven't been following these either.

LIE DETECTOR:

Tell us two true things about yourself and one lie.
1. My parents nearly abandoned me in South Dakota.
2. I rode in one of the Red Baron Aerobatic planes.
3. I have never had a broken bone.

THREE FUN FAVORITES:
Favorite food:
Meat Lover's Pizza (though it doesn't fit in my new "heart-healthy" diet )

Favorite movie:
Classic: Cary Grant's "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse"
Modern: "Megamind" or "The Incredibles"

Favorite sport:
Baseball.

CLOSING:

What message do you have for the ‘Scaper community?
I'm glad to be a part of this group. The game may be out of print, but there are plenty of things to be excited about with C3V and C3G - and HoSS .

Whom do you pick for the next ‘Scaper of the Week?
Pokemon Master, White Knight!

Great interview! I found it interesting to read of your "rise" in HoSS. You've always been the Big Man #2 to me (behind Porkins) since I was accepted in.

#2 is the lie, I think. You've talked about planes, so it makes sense you'd lie about riding in a certain one to try and trick us

I always immensely enjoy reading these interviews. I love having some insight into the lives of the other people on this site. I agree with Arch-vile, #2 must be the lie.

I had forgotten about 2 truths and a lie.
#1 is true, though unintentional...I think.
Spoiler Alert!

#3 is absolutely false. I've had 3 broken bones: left ulna, right big toe, and right cuboid.
#2 is amazingly true! Gotcha!
Spoiler Alert!
