The truth about the Steamroller

The Steamroller has been getting lots of forum debate ever since Grungebob first teased it back in April.

For those they may still not know, it is 3xCapuans, Crixus and Spartacus for 500 pts.

I think it has been largely misunderstood. I think many have associated the hype with it being somehow unstoppable or the cream of the crop. In fact, I contend that if the Steamroller wasn’t hyped so much, the Capuans and the rather obvious steamroller build would be receiving praise at the present, not discounts. I don’t mind saying that I think the Hype created some unrealistic expectations.

However, I offer no apologies for the hype. I think it is justified. Spartacus went from being dust covered to playable with the release of the Capuans. That in of itself is worth applause. I do not wish to change anyone’s mind about the Capuans or the Steamroller. The Steamroller build is just a simple build, a fun build, and at least a some what competitive build....

Living Life by the Drop

When I first started playing Heroscape, the Airborne Elite were my favorite unit. Their ability to take over and dominate a game was unmatched. They are still highly capable of such feats and are extremely scary to high cost Heroes, but additional range releases have toned down their overall effectiveness. However, they are still extremely dangerous and respected. Because they do not start on the battlefield, their success is always in doubt. They scream “Be Aggressive!” but their low defense make it a bit of a gamble. The Drop has to hit to even have a chance but even then you have to play them smart to get something out of them.

The Drop is the most challenging part of playing the AE, but without it you don’t have them at all. If you Drop them too close then they may not even get to attack. If you drop them too far then their slow movement hampers their ability to get up and rain down. Drop them on high ground and they are right out in plain view with huge targets on...

Powder Puff Girls

Ah yes the shelf clogging Nakita; they are easily my favorite squad. I have played the snot of the Nakita, probably more so than most can imagine. They are a blast to play but they are not that durable and not that reliable; two traits that make them very iffy for sustained competitive play. They can do so much for so many or yet nothing at all. They can be a huge liability in one match up and then a huge asset in another. This is because their best ability, Smoke Powder, does not work against special attacks. A short coming for sure. It is also because their 2 defensive abilities rely on the D20. Unlike the Krav, who are universally good against most anything, the Nakita are specialized and complimentary and, unfortunately, easily countered. Nonetheless, I still find myself using them more and more. Maybe it is the release of Agent Skahen or just my current infatuation or maybe it is my desire to scratch out a little more respect for them. Whatever the reason, I find myself working them...

Kill the Krav!

Posted October 22nd, 2008 at 03:32 PM by R˙chean
The ability of a unit to absorb attacks does much more than just make them durable. It makes them beneficial to other units in your army. How? Because those attack absorbing units usually warrant attention which can allow you to get other units into the fray or into position. The Krav Maga are a good example of this. Their reputation proceeds them and they are often the target of attacks just because they are the Krav Maga. The more they are attacked the more likely they will whiff their defense roll. Most players approach fighting the Krav with that in mind. This increases the chances that they will be attacked even when their threat is minimal. It also creates situations where you can use them as decoys or as bait. I know what you are thinking: the Krav as bait? An expensive piece of cheese, for sure, but if you have already lost one of them, it can potentially benefit your entire army to play them in a decoy or baiting role.

Once a single Krav Maga is lost their power...

Bloodlusting or a Bloodletting?

Posted October 13th, 2008 at 01:08 PM by R˙chean
Feast or Famine: it never seems more true than with the Tagawa Samurai. Their hefty price point and solid stats puts a bull's-eye on them as big as Taelord. The Tagawa will not be overlooked by the opponent. They will be targeted early and often. No one wants the rampaging Samurai fully armed and filthy except the guy playing them. And when they are fully armed, they can be down right nasty. We have all seen it: 2 or even all 3 of them with the experience markers stacked up just tearing through stuff. Unfortunately, for every time we see them shine they probably come up short three to four times or more. They are one of the trickier units to play as their full potential is only realized once they have killed 3 units. It is the closest special to leveling currently in the game. Krug sort of levels up as he gets wounded, but watching the big boy take killing punishment doesn't have the same feel as seeing those purple markers get stacked up from successful kills. It is truly awesome, but...
