My New (at least to me) Figures - Now what?!

Posted April 26th, 2009 at 02:46 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

My friend, Chas, has arranged for me to acquire a Heroscape Hoard for a relative song. I won't know 'til Wednsday exactly what I have. As I understand it, I will have at least 1 of just about everything. I laud his kindness and generosity yet again herein and ask you all to celebrate with me as I become a True Heroscaper (with the possession of my own figures)!

Given the above, I'd appreciate any advice with creating a competitive army using only 1 of any common squad. I would like to build it around a core of 1 x Arrow Gruts, Mimring and Krug. For example, at 540 points, I could add 1 x KoW, Thorgrim and Finn.

Humbly Grateful

Hmm, 1 squad of low defence commons won't get you much. Knights might be okay, but I'd go for the high defence ones like minnions. Combine that with unique squads or heroes, and you should be fine. The only thing to fear whould be if Chas used a lot of commons, but he wouldn't have any, would he?

Well met!

Chas (Possessor of All Things 'Scape) got me into this. We play at his place on most Wednsdays, with his figures. The figures I'm getting are from a collection Chas got from a friend. The only figures Chas doesn't have are a few multiples of common squads, most notably the Deathreavers. I don't really expect to field a Tournament army from these figures, but, as I said, I don't know for sure. But, in any event, this will be a great start. It should not be too much trouble to acquire additional squads of the most common commons. So, in answer to your question, Chas will be able to field practically anything you can think of, except huge quantities of common squads, against my figures.

Well then, that poses a problem. If you play a draft, that should be much easier. Something like

would allow you to take a strong position and just shoot him to death, and you could keep nakitas in front so melee guys have to risk engagement strike. The problem is if he uses 2 squads of venoc vipers, he would easily be able to engage your guys. I do think this army is competetive (Though you may want to change nakitas and Q10 for Q9 and Raelin. I think that combination is bad sportsmanship personally) so I suspect that it could deal with what ever he sends at you.

I'd follow EP's lead and go with all uniques if you want to be as competitive as possible. That said, if you're going to field a single common squad then a bonding one with strong heroes is probably the way to go. I'd fill out your 540pt Arrow Grut army like this:

Arrow Gruts x1: 40
Krug: 120
Mimring: 150
Swog Rider: 25
Nilfheim: 185
Marcu: 20
Total: 540pts, 12 hexes.

1. You will have the figures for the core team you mention (and many more). You will not have about 9 heroes, but have 7 of their cards. You will not have about 14 squads. This is so I can share the wealth a bit with a about three other players I know. You will also get most of the figures from the Swarm of the Marro (Master Set #2) which is still coming from our generous pal; especially as they are mostly heroes, including the Marro Hive.

2. Someone seems to be under the misapprehension that I cannot field multiple squads. That someone is wrong...
