Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me!

Well met!

The above is usually uttered to stave off the very real pain that words can deliver. Many on this site take pride in being able to say whatever they wish, and they can, and they do, defiantly choosing not to take responsibility for how they may affect those to whom they are directed. I am not immune . I'm just sayin' .

The Valhalla Society is a Romantic idea I came up with when I first started playing Heroscape. Think the Last Samurai (without the suicidal charge). Oversimplified, members eschew guns [see my blog for detailed info]. The response to this idea was varied, from bemused scepticism to outright hostility, but there was no groundswell of support and I, being the only member (and feeling the pinch of lacking Knights, Aubriens, etc., to add variety for competitive tournament play), had pretty much decided to abandon the idea.

Then, in a comment to my blog on a totally different subject, Sylvano, whose own blog is a paen to the spirit of adventure that is at the heart of Heroscape (and has garnered, I'm sure, a huge body of fans, including myself), said the following, in response to my placing Q-10 in an army I was considering for Islandscape:

At my house, we talk much of the Valhalla Society, and my daughter is even making T-shirts. She's working on a logo with a gun inside of a red circle with a red sword overtop. I have always been meaning to ask your permission and patience - the Valhalla Society, I think, is yours, and it has been creeping more and more into my thoughts. And writings. Have you read "Another Dead End"?

[Tried, and failed, to insert link here.]

I have never met you, so I imagined what you would look like and put you into my story, unnamed, of course. I hope that's all right . . .

These are words of a different sort. I was stunned. I'm still in shock. I'm pretty sure that Sylvano, astute as he may be, had no idea of the power of his words in this instance. My view of the world, and my place in it, has always been distorted, mostly to my detriment. Many good things have happened to show me this, in my singing, my dojo, and, most of all, in the woman with whom I share a Life, but, in all too many ways, I cling to the idea that I don't matter (which was a big reason why I often didn't weigh the consequences of my own words). So, this is a big deal to me. I know; Heroscape is just a game. The Valhalla Society is just an idea within a game. And, yet, I am deeply moved, humbled and unlifted, all at the same time.

As to Islandscape, perhaps Nilfeim . . .

It's always great to get some positive feedback. Glad your idea captured the imagination of some other like-minded 'Scapers.

We all handicap ourselves in different ways at different times in Heroscape to see what will happen. Doing so in tournament play takes big ones, my friend.

I think it's a neat idea, especially if you're a student of any martial art.
Through my training I have learned great respect for the incredible swordsman, archers, etc of old.
The Valhalla Society to me represents the respect and skill of those vanished times and arts...
