Fever Magic Dreams

Posted October 27th, 2020 at 03:30 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
As the season turns into Fall my hay fever kicks into high gear. I’m a bit of an extremist- I’m extreme in everything I do. I commit 168% percent. My hay fever allergy is no different. I have the worst ragweed allergy that the allergy doctors have ever seen. Twenty seven separate symptoms. None of their treatments worked. Anyway, that is not the point of this blog.

One of the side effects of my hay fever are strange and unsettling dreams. Nightmares really, but they’re sneaky nightmares, that start off normally and quietly and then get increasingly weird and upsetting. And unlike a lot of my dreams, I remember them clearly when I wake up, so I get to enjoy the horror all day long.

So in this particular dream, I was at home, though it wasn’t my real home but in the dream it was- you know how that goes- when suddenly it wasn’t my home after all. The dreams like to play games with my brain. I was in some dark gloomy room decorated with spooky paintings and...

Email Scape

Posted October 9th, 2020 at 02:33 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I just finished my first Scape game by Email. I lost, of course.

I know there’s some great software for playing Scape, but if you recall, my Scape game is different. Also I am working four jobs just now. The pandemic has idled some people. For some reason, I’m much busier.

My eldest son came down to visit this summer and we played every single day. He was kind and generous because he’s a much better player than I am. He said it was fun just to play again. He suggested a point system that gradually increased. We started with 800 vs 800 points. We decided to play a game with objectives. Our game- nicknamed SylvanoScape- is more of an army game than a squad game. On your turn you use your entire force. There is a lot of shuffling for position and trying to trick the opponent before the fighting gets heavy.

We decided to play an objective game we call scouting. You simply must travel over five preselected hexes to win the game. Usually the selected...

COVID crush!

Posted September 11th, 2020 at 11:26 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
COVID Crush

My family has sheltered in place during the COVID lockdown. We only went out for groceries and other essentials... sometimes screws and nails are essentials. I was often the person going out- and I’m a homebody anyway- so I didn’t notice the stir crazy building in the rest of my family. I mean I’ve always thought they were a little cuckoo but apparently now part of it was because they wanted desperately to go somewhere other than the backyard and the garage.

My step-daughter was called back to work. She works and lives in a different place, and she just came home when things closed down. So when she started at work again she went back and we decided to go visit her. She lives in a small town and everything is closed there so I found a nearby Conservation Area with a waterfall- waterfalls always cheer everyone up, don’t they?

It was only a day trip but we were out of practice going places. We couldn’t remember what to bring. Obviously...

COVID Doorman

Posted August 7th, 2020 at 09:11 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
So I am back at work. My main jobs at the moment are letting people into the building to see the counselors who have offices in the basement and untangling the paperwork that has accumulated while we were closed.

I get to dress in full PPE to open the door. Mask, clear face shield, sterile gloves and gown. I meet them at the door and have to ask them health questions.

Do you have fever? A cough? Breathing difficulties? No? Then you can come in. No one has answered yes to any query yet. I suppose I’ll have to turn them away if they do.

Then they can come in to the hand sanitizer station where they lather up before using the elevator.

When they exit the elevator in the basement where they counselors’ offices are I call the elevator back and sanitize it. Spraying and polishing. That’s it. That’s my job.

This morning I had an elderly woman with dementia. Her husband dropped her off. She didn’t want to wear her...

COVID Chronicles

Posted July 30th, 2020 at 12:51 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
When this whole COVID pandemic started I was just like everybody else. Didn’t know much. Then the lockdowns started. Where I work most people were told to stay home and were laid off. I got the flu one day and it freaked everyone out. Then they shut down my work place completely.

I didn’t mind staying home. I decided to sell my house, so I began fixing it up and cleaning it out. In the beginning getting wood for repairs and new flooring and ceilings was a hassle- waiting in line to go in the store, socially distanced. Then the store was shut down. It was an inconvenience but I didn’t let it slow me down.

I still walked every morning, but now the streets of this city were deserted. On an hour long walk I might only see two people and a handful of cars. And I thought I finally have enough room. I’m not a real social person. I don’t like crowds or bars. I like privacy and space. And I finally had it. If someone was walking near me we’d both move further away....
