Heroscape D3 Preview Week 5

And so we have arrived, to the final week of D3 previews! Some of you may notice, while this is our last Preview Wednesday for D3, we still have 3 Army Cards to reveal.

The final 3 figures have been shipped to 3 National Heroscape Day events. The Ice Troll Berserker will be revealed at the New England event, Moltenclaw will be revealed at Tree Town Open VI, and Master of the Hunt will be revealed at Hexes in Texas. I’ll post the article for those figures once I return from the New England event Saturday night.

But today, we’re going to cover the other 3 remaining Army Cards. The Mezzodemon Warmongers, The Death Chasers of Thesk, and Evar Scarcarver

Mezzodemon Warmongers:

The Mezzodemons are another 2 unit common squad for D&D Scape. Like the Death Knights of Valkrill they have their own unique twist that makes them deadly on the battlefield. Unlike the Death Knights, the Mezzodemons are more of a defensive squad. Their basic attack is based on a short ranged Poison cloud, with that cloud affecting Common figures more than Unique/Uncommon figures.

Each squad comes with 2 Exoskeleton Markers. When you draft Mezzodemons, you collect 1 marker for each Mezzodemon in your army. After a Mezzodemon rolls defense for a NORMAL attack, you can remove a exoskeleton marker from a Mezzodemon Army card to ignore those wounds.

This makes the Mezzodemons well suited to hold an area, especially a glyph, but also means that they are very strong early in the game as they just won’t fall, but as the game moves on, and the markers run out, they fall much easier. They are a really fun squad to bring into battle, but don’t rely too heavily on them, or you will regret it.

Death Chasers of Thesk:

The next squad we’re revealing today is the Death Chasers of Thesk. We wanted to design these guys as a wild force that just sweeps over the battlefield and keeps attacking till their opponent falls. To that end, we designed the Orc Battle Rush power. That first 5 space jump on any map is huge! All of a sudden your opponent’s tactics have to change now that he has a few squads of Orcs breathing down his neck.

Not to mention Taskmaster Bonding, which allows the Orcs to bond with the Large Wild Hero that is forcing them down the battlefield. The current Heroes that bond with the Death Chasers are: Me-Burq-Sa, Nerak, Ogre Pulverizer, Ogre Warhulk, and the Swog Rider.

Evar Scarcarver:

And finally, we’ve reached the third of four new sculpts in this wave (the 4th is the Master of the Hunt which will be revealed at Hexes in Texas this Saturday). Evar Scarcarver is Vydar’s new Frostrager. We wanted to give Evar the ability to turn Frost Rage on as opposed to just having him raging all the time. In our discussions, Colby came up with the X order marker mechanic we finally used, and eventually repurposed for Siege as well.

Evar comes with 2 unique powers. First, his Frost Rage power, which turns him into a mini-krug. Second is his Double Assault power. Double Assault allows him to attack an adjacent figure and quickly turn that attack into a second one as well. That second attack doesn’t need to be against the same figure (but of course engagement rules apply) the only trigger for using the power is that the first attack has to be against an adjacent opponent.

Enjoy dissecting those figures, and try to make it out to your local NHSD event this weekend!
Remember, if you show up at one of the below events, you can get a close up look at some of the new figures in D3!
New England: Ice Troll Berserker revealed, Siege, Mezzodemon Warmongers, and the Ogre Pulverizer
Texas: Master of the Hunt revealed, Death Knights of Valkrill, Frost Giant of Morh, and the Horned Skull Brutes
Tree Town: Moltenclaw revealed, Eltahale, Death Chasers of Thesk, and Evar Scarcarver.
I’ll post the preview for all 3 cards that night (10/16)

FUn stuff. Always a fan of bonding. The orcs look like an entertaining shock troop force to try and take out an army early on. The Mezzodemons are nice, looking forward to trying them. Evar will be a nice addition to our random draft unique hero games. Great stuff, and can't wait to see the other figures as well!

The Death Chasers are very interesting and should generate a lot of unique army ideas... I'll be interested in that thread.

Mezzodemons are looking awesome. Really looking forward to trying those ones out.

Death Chasers looks like a fun unit too. Not too crazy about units with 2 or fewer Defence, but at least they bond with the Ogres! I guess they need to be played aggressively, based on their abilities.

Evar, sadly, is not my cup of tea. Never liked abilities based on wounds caused to the unit. With the Ogre getting some bonding, Evar will be pushed to the bottom of my list of interest.
Stll this wave is looking to become one of the best ever!

D3 Marches On with Awesomeness!

I'm joyous to see bonding with some older figures who are now "rescued," and a hardy MwaHaHa! to those who pooh-poohed the Ogres!!!

(Overheard in a bar)
Alaistair MacDirk to Evar Scarcarver:
"I feel your pain."

Hmmm...you COULD give all the Exoskeleton wound markers to just one or two MD figures (of several squads) in key positions, couldn't you?

And for those of you in the throes of Speculation Withdrawl at the end of the previews this week, you can head for my new thread on D4 Speculation!

I have a serious man crush on the Deathchasers. With Raelin and Nerak they'll have 4 attack and 5 defense which is pretty hard hitting for a squad. Me-Burq is just icing on the cake.

The sculpts for the Mezzodemons are great and are one of the most evil looking figures to be in the game. These guys are going to demand that you have a special attacking figure or else.

Evar presents a unique challenge as a pseudo Krug. Once he gets going he'll be difficult to stop but every round when the order markers reset he'll be vulnerable if you lose initiative. I wonder if there are ways to influence the initiative rolls?

Hmmm... After a few moments of reflection, I'm a bit more critical of this expansion. Design is strong as always. New skills aren't terribly complex, and unit cost is low. They seem to fill a nice niche. The sculpts on the other hand, are really hit and miss. The Mezzodemons are cute as bedbugs (and timely I guess). The Orcs appear disjointed, in both their sculpts and paint job. Considering what WOTC had to pull from, better choices seemed to exist. Scarcarver appears to have been shelved from the DnD mini line for a reason. I'll reserve my final judgement until the wave arrives at my doorstep - but for now; D3's appearance is starting to "jump the shark."

I think with the exception of the frost giant this is the best looking wave ever.
