Lazy Laundry Tournament 3 – The Nagrub Open!

I’ve had Marrden Nagrubs win these tournaments before, but I’ve never had both finalists with Nagrub armies. I actually set these tournaments up to avoid pitting the same units against one another, but sometimes the teams are so good they still manage to run into each other even if they were put in another quarter or, in this case, a whole other half of the bracket.

This was a bit of a tournament of champions. Several of the armies had won previous Lazy Laundry Tournaments:

--Hulk, Venocs x3, Blue Wyrmling, Black Wyrmling, Red Wyrmling (Mind Flayer killed this team in the second round—made the Hulk jump into lava and then proceeded to cripple the Venoc Vipers all on his own, removing one order markere with each attack)

--Anubians x3, Khosumet, Mezzodemons x4, Guilty (I lead with the Anubians, in the hopes of taking out Nilfheim early, but failed; once the wolves fell to the lawnmower, the Mezzodemons couldn’t take out the Ice Dragon)

--Major Q9, Su-Bak-Na, Drones x3, Marro Warriors, Nagrubs x2 (Before Nagrubs were around, I had a pretty successful 500 point version of this army using DW9000 instead of Major Q9; they made it to the finals a couple times, but never won until I added Q9)

--Captain America, Ana Karithon, Syvarris, Raelin 1.0, WoA x2 (if dok is reading this, yes, this is an army you came up with—I used it when I thought you were going to bring it to NHSD and, much to my chagrin, it pretty handily beat the rest of the field in the LLT it won—the summoning glyph and Zetacron killed it this time around)

Unlike other Lazy Laundry Tournaments, I tried to build armies around the best units, rather than giving the worst units first dibs. Because of that, some of the best performing units were versions of other successful armies from Laundry Tourneys past. Tor-Kul-Na hadn’t won any 600 point tourneys, but he and the Nagrubs were the combo to beat in many of the 700 point tourneys I’ve run. A Charos-Nilfheim combo lost once in a final to the Q9-Su-Bak-Na army listed above. The Venoc Warlord usually does well, but with a variety of different teams (one of these days, I’ll find the right championship combo for Mittens). I’ve actually seen James Murphy win or be runner-up at every point level I’ve run tourneys – 400, 500, 600 or 700.

But there was a surprise, as well! Iron Man usually blows chunks—he’s done okay in some 700 point tourneys, but he’s only gotten to the 3rd round once before in 600 point tourneys. In this army, Tor-Kul-Na gave him the opportunity to become a clean-up unit par excellence! Usually I’d lead with Tor-Kul-Na (unless the opposing army had a packed start-zone, in which case I’d send Murphy out on a suicide charge with shotgun in hand). By the time Tor-Kul-Na was killed (which didn’t always happen), I’d send out Iron Man. With the Nagrubs already scattered about the battlefield, he could use them effectively as blockers for his ranged attack—that made up for his relative fragility.

Well, all in all, it was a fun tourney. Right now the Colorado Heroscapers are talking about having a 550 point all-hero event on June 4th, so I’ll probably have to run a 550 point all-hero tourney myself before that weekend, just to figure out which combos I’m interested in fielding. I’ll be sure not to post those results until the June 4th event is over… don’t want to show my hand early or anything.
