Cardtable Combat Tonight!

Posted September 9th, 2009 at 01:17 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

This week's 750 point Battle for All Time takes place at my home, as opposed to Chas'. This means that, rather than Chas' unlimited terrain and giant table map, we will be playing with the terrain from 1 SotM, 1 Marvel Master Set (sans Lab), and 1 Road to the Forgotten Forest, on a cardtable. Within these limitations, IMHO, I have created an interesting map. It is symetrical, with tiny, identical shrines (1 black, 1 white) in 2 opposing corners, to each player's left, which contain the highest points on the map. Towards the center and to the right of each player is a mostly road-hexed plateau, with a single tree, reached by going to the right corner around some water (or over or through), and climbing a short set of 2-space stairs, which are road hexes. Extending from the plateau is an aborted road, 5 hexes long, but only the width of the road, at the same level, angled back towards the center. The center of the map is swamp. The start zones are in the back and...

The 2 Deadly Sins of Heroscape - My Downfall

Posted August 28th, 2009 at 12:41 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

Impatience and Greed are the 2 Deadly Sins of Heroscape, and I allowed them to take me over in last night's game, resulting in my, and my team's, total destruction. I did this, in spite of admonishing myself on these issues right before we started. I am so disappointed in myself that I can't bear to attempt a blow-by-blow account for your entertainment. If the other participants wish, they are invited to comment/gloat. Picture the scene near the end of the 10 Commandments where Yul Brenner as Pharoah, upon witnessing the destruction of his army after it impetuously pursued the Jews into the seabed corridor created by Moses parting of the Red Sea, dramatically drops his head into his hands in despair and defeat. That is me.

Champs de Mars - 3-6 Players - 750 Points

Posted August 25th, 2009 at 03:36 PM by kolakoski
Updated August 26th, 2009 at 12:41 PM by kolakoski (Revised Army Lists)
Well met!

Chas has based this week's 33 x 24 board on a famous military site near Paris. The map is relatively open and flat, with a double-wide road through the center, and two transverse roads radiating out from there.

The scenario is limited to non-firearms Classics. A unit whose primary weapon is a gun are forbidden. Any unit whose secondary weapon is a gun is OK (Drake II), but he is unable to use it.

The possible players: Chas, Sherman, Taeblewalker, Nick, Troy, Cathy and I. If an even number, we will play in teams; if odd, he who kills the most points wins.

My army:

150 Cyprien
150 Mimring
120 Kaemon
120 Krug
100 Syvarris
80 Raelin
80 Kelda
45 Sonja
25 Dumutef
750

If teamed, I may have to completely rebuild.

Unusual Scenario - Cold Mountain - Battle Report

Posted August 21st, 2009 at 09:48 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

Last night, Chas, Sherman and I (Troy, as usual, canceled; see posts in Unusual Scenario in the Competitive Armies forum) played on a map of Chas's devising he calls "Cold Mountain". I quote Chas's e-mail description:

"A 24 x 22 hex rectangle, longer between the players, has a central mountain about 12 hexes tall and 12 x 8 hexes, a rectangle that is longer crosswise. WIND is constantly in effect, which means no flying at any time. The terrain is vey restrictive and broken, such that two hex or winged figures will be severely constrained; large figures such as dragons even more so. Their use is not recommended!

"The surrounding snow terrain around Cold Mountain is broken by 3-4 hex glacier mountains, pairs of pine trees, ice depressions and small elevations, although all snow and ice costs only one move per hex. However, sight lines are quite restricted every 7 hexes or so. Four meltwater streams of 5-8 hexes radiate...

Race and Heroscape - Why NOT Masai or Mayan Warriors?

Posted August 3rd, 2009 at 10:36 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

A recent off the cuff and, as it turns out, boneheaded post by yours truly in Random Heroscape Musings has brought up an issue that, while addressed before in numerous posts in various Heroscapers' forums, has not, to my knowledge been addressed in quite the way I now suggest. I quote myself (not the boneheaded post, but one following a bit of discussion).

The "prickly" issue of racial sensitivity is, in my opinion, one of ignorance about and between the races. If I were Wotc, I would see this as an opportunity to fight such ignorance and make a buck at the same time. I'd consult with Black historians (Schaumberg Center?) and activists and the media ina way similar to the way Marvel publicized Luke Cage or the Black Panther. I'd bring in the guys who did the research for Mel Gibson's Mayan movie. I'd get Al Sharpton's endorsement. I'd do TV commercials touting the educational and social advantages to Heroscape, as opposed to...
