You may have heard of “counting coup.” Just in case you haven’t, I’ll explain a little.
Coup is from French, meaning a blow or strike. Counting coup is the Anglo-French title for a dangerous game played by the Plains Indians of North American.
Let me be clear- it wasn’t really a game- the stakes were life and death- but if you counted a coup, you got bragging rights and perhaps an eagle feather to wear.
Counting Coup was easy enough to talk about. During combat, you simply had to get close enough to your enemy and then give them a friendly tap, before escaping unharmed. Striking any blow counted but the most prestigious coups were the most daring- the finger poke in the belly, the tap on the shoulder, the nose twist. Touching the first enemy dead in battle was also counted as a coup, as well as touching enemy fortifications. Stealing horses and weapons from enemy encampments could also be feather worthy.
