Musings from Sunny Negril!

Whaagwaan!

[From my tablet]

Just thinking how cool a Heroscape Holiday would be, as I gaze out at the ocean from my seat at one of the four round tables that would be ideal for a four player game. The weather has been near perfect during the last two weeks and, although swimming, walking, and cabbing (very inexpensive, especially compared to New York) to the beach, the numerous bars and restaurants, and hanging with friends we've made over the years (local and tourist) have kept me awfully busy, there has been plenty of leisure time for the local game - dominoes - that I can easily imagine devoting some of for 'Scaping. I wonder how many 'Scapers out there would be interested in a week or two, at pre-season rates (here at the Castle, around $60/night), of swimming, swilling, smoking, and 'Scaping outdoors here in beautiful Negril, Jamaica?

A Royal Rescue - an Island Scenario

Well met!

Inspired by Lord-IVD's island map, and sea-gazing here in Jamaica, I've come up with the following:

A Royal Rescue!

The Map. A port town. The map is in three parts. If seated at one short end of the map, closest to you are the Docks, a Sandy area 4-6 hexes deep. Next, separated from it is by a Wall with a single, central, Gate, is the town Square, the largest portion of the map, with a central fortified Well, from which Water flows to nourish Jungle and Palms. At the opposite end of the map from you, in the corners, are the royal Chambers, each containing a Royal Family.

The Gate. The Gate is four hexes wide. It, and the Wall, are Magically Enchanted, and cannot be flown or leapt over. The only way to travel between the Docks and the Square is by walking through the Gate.

The Armies. Medieval (old Valhalla Society restrictions). Four players divided into two teams. 750 points per player. Each team will also have units representing its Royal Family (King, Queen, Prince, and Princess).

The Play. There will be two five-Round games. In the first, the teams set up on opposite ends of the Docks. The Royal Family is not in play. The object of the first game is to get as many of your units into your Chamber as possible within five Rounds. In the second game, the units that made it into their Chambers are set up, along with their Royal Families, in their respective Chambers. In this second game, the Docks are considered neutral territory, and no Attacks or Special Powers may be executed by any unit, or against any unit, to or from any Dock hex. The object of the second game is to get as many of your Royal Family as you can to the Docks within five Rounds.

The Royal Family. Each player of a team may place Order Markers (OMs) on Royal Family units, but such units may not be moved unless they are unengaged and adjacent to a friendly unit, and no Royal Family unit may have more than one of the same numbered OM. They may, however, attack.

The Victory Conditions. Victory Points (VPs) will be awarded to each team as follows:

1 VP for killing the most units in the first game.

1 VP for killing the most units in the second game (not counting enemy Royals).

1 VP for killing the most enemy Royals in the second game.

1 VP for each friendly Royal that makes it to the Docks.

Yeah, but the problem is, nobody reads the blogs...

Sounds like Jamaica is coming to New York City!

About the scenario . . .

Well met!

Ah well - at least we do, and here is as good a place as any to communicate . . .

Note that it is not the most points but the most units for which VPs are awarded - mitigating the value of squad units. There is also the issue of the Gate being the only way into the Square from the Docks. If players are not careful, they may find themselves blocked from getting any units into their Chambers.

P.S.: When I get back, I'll post some pics of the Castle with a Heroscape Holiday in mind - and copy everything into the Gang forum thread.

Clarifications

Well met!

Tornado, lots of folks from your neck of the woods visit Negril regularly. If you came down between Thanksgiving and Christmas, you could get a room at Blue Cave for $60/night, and you would have a guide (me) to show you how to maneuver.

To the point, clarified movement between the Docks and the Square, and of Royal Family units.

P.S.: Now we need to create Royal Family units . . .

P.P.S.: I envision them as actually being useful. The King will be a Great Warrior, Life 6, Move 5, Range 1, Attack 4, Defense 4. With Royal Inspiration: All friendly units within 4 spaces add 1 to their Attack and Defense against adjacent units. The Queen will be a Mage with Move 5, Life 5, Range 1, Attack/Defense 3, and a Range 6, Attack 4 area attack [Royal Blast?]. The Prince will be a dexterous swordsman, stats Attack/Defense 3, Life 4, Move 6, Range 1, and his own version of Disappearing Ninja called Prince be Nimble. The Princess will be a shinobi, stats Move 6, Attack/Defense 3, Life 4, Range 1, with Phantom Walk and a Shuriken Special Attack, Range 3, Attack 3. All Royal Family units will have the Take An Arrow For Me Special Power: Any time a Royal Family unit is targeted for an Attack or Special Power, any adjacent friendly unit, on a roll of 8 or higher on a 20-sider, may be chosen to be the target of that Attack or Special Power instead of the Royal Family unit. Their Race will be Human, their Class will be Royal, and their Personality will be Arrogant.
