Wave 10 - Clearing up the Confusion

I just received clearance from Wizards of the Coast to release some more information on the circumstances surrounding 'Special Collection 10'

A few months ago, Jerry, Chris and I were approached by WotC. They wanted to reprint Wave 5, but they very wisely didn’t want to reprint the uniques from that pack. (I think many of us can still walk into a Walmart and pick up the uniques from Wave 5.) However without the uniques, they were left with only half a wave. As a resolution to that issue, they wanted to create a unique pairing for that reprinted set, but since we were short on time, we couldn’t mold out new figures. They would have to be previously released figures.

After much discussion, it was decided that we finally had the avenue we wanted to be able to release some of the promotional figures and allow them to become widely available for those players who have never been able to make it to Gencon, or purchase them on the second hand market. We picked the 3 oldest sets of promotional figures, the Elite Onyx Vipers from an exclusive version of the original Master Set, Nerak from Gencon 2006, and Sir Hawthorne from Gencon 2007.

We also decided that the best figures to be repainted and re-released were probably the ones that are most tied to their individual terrain. We decided the Obsidian Guards and the Dzu-Teh would be the best bet to be repainted into what are now the Granite Guardians and the Quasatch Hunters.

Jerry, Chris and I scrambled to redesign these common squads and work with the playtesters on them while WOTC built what would be called “Special Collection 10”. It’s not technically a full wave (because of the reprint) but WotC needed to use the sequential naming convention because of the retailers product stocking systems.

While I would be even more excited to be explaining that a full wave of new figures were coming our way so soon after Wave 9, that’s not the case. We’re working on what could potentially be a very exciting 2010 for Heroscape, and as soon as we can release any info on that, we will. But for now, know that Special Collection 10, is coming. We can only hope that the lack of information, and the confusion surrounding what is or is not included, hasn’t hampered anyone’s excitement over the 2 new squads, and the re-release of the Exclusive figures as well as the commons from Wave 5.

That's great news for any out there who were bemoaning the death of 'Scape.

I was not one of them, by the way.

I think I speak for most of us when I say, Thank You!

I'm very happy with this set and only hope that we might see Skahen and Woo in the next set.

Can you tell us anything on if this is going to be a trend or not?

I will either love or hate WOTC. Right now, I'm loving them.

Thanks for clearing up info, however what you said was what I was thinking it was anyway. The only thing I really want to know now is, what are the stats on the guards and hunters? If they are a common squad I'm afraid it will be another mistake as now they will be twice as needed as anything else in the wave, if they are unique then great job. I guess that is what I care more about than the exact stats, I will get them either way.

I never understood the "they are releasing more stuff" must be the end nonsense. The Promo's are new to me, and everyone should be happy about Bigfoot and rock men... Rock on you crazy Monkeys. Rock ON!
