Two years later...

'Sup guys? Bigga here, for those who know/remember me. BiggaBullfrog here, for those who haven't known me before.

I just got back from living in Japan for about two years, during which time I was not able to keep up on the site. But it was good to get back and see things are still going (I left just a couple months after the plug was pulled on Heroscape, and before the major Custom groups were fully going). I actually got back almost two months ago, and decided that, for my own interest and hopefully yours as well, I would blog about, basically, the changes around here in the past two years. Taking such a jump was fun, so I though I'd let you in on it. I didn't do it right when I got back, though, as I learned that a Custom wave was coming out soon, so I decided to wait until after that to post this.

So, where to begin? Well, let's start with a little more background on how I left this place.
When I left- I left at the end of January of 2011. The plug had been pulled on the game only months before, and the C3V project was getting started (not sure how far they'd gotten by then, but I think they were in the beginning stages of designing their first units; I remember some mentions about Haduc). Truth be told, I myself had started brainstorming some "officially unofficial" customs (I have some customs posted, but I'm talking about ones specifically to mesh into Classic 'scape as far as synergies/unit names go). In fact, I found my notes on those (none were finished) and it was fun to compare some of those to the ones released by C3V (Dreadgul raiders, Haduc vs my elf wizard design, Mariedians, Raptorians, Zogross vs my Lizardfold hero, etc. (I would add Quahon, but that design was pretty obvious after the wyrmling so... nevermind)). Now that "officially unofficial" figures are out, I don't know if I'll finish those designs and post them just for fun... maybe, maybe not.

I kept some contact with UtahScott while I was in Japan, so he kept me loosely afloat on what had been happening, although that was basically news that x amount of waves had come out. Thus when I got back, I didn't really know what to expect as far as amounts of new figures, activity on the site, etc. would go.

First reactions- Thus, when I got back, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this site has kept going. It's still really alive, thanks to our awesome custom producers. When I first looked at the list of new units, I admit I did think it was a small amount of units, but then I realized I was comparing it to the speed at which the DnD sets were coming out, and realized that for the workload they've got, the C3V have been pumping out a good amount of quality customs.

I believe by now I have looked over every new figure. Not every unit jumped out at me and made me want to play it immediately, but all the figures are pretty sick, and all the cards look like they're reasonably balanced and there's a nice amount of cool powers floating around (small note--interestingly, the majority of the figures that did jump out and make me want to play them were mostly the small-point fillers; Siiv and Kira Jax, for example). Overall, some pretty jacked and high quality customs have been produced. Props to the C3V team.

(Small side note--having lived in Japan I naturally learned Japanese, and though I'm generally good at keeping English and Japanese separated, once in a while I miss a small, end-of-sentence phrase, so forgive me if I throw something in you don't understand ne.)

Playtesting- Let's see, what else...? Oh, I also got in on that public playtesting action they've got going on; one for the Quorrik Warwitch and the other for Sir Orrick. Naturally I'm sworn to secrecy, but they're both pretty spankin' units--I like them. The playtests were fun, and I think a great way to get the public in on the action as well. Good fun.

Ticalla Jungle- I remember that before I left I thought several times that, as the plug had been pulled, hopefully by the time I'd gotten back plastic would have gotten cheaper so I could easily round out my collection without having to use too many expenses. I spent many funds on plastic before I left, and thus have a good collection, but was hoping to effortlessly buy those things I'd never gotten to but always wanted; Aquilla's Alliance, the Tundra, and most of all, the Ticalla Jungle. Thus I felt a pang of grief when I jumped on ebay and saw these wants of mine selling for over $100. Many a tear was shed. Or maybe just a "dang it." Either way, I remembered reading about how custom Ticalla Jungles were easy to make, and after a little searching, found a couple threads to expand on that. Now, I have never made a custom anything before (I've made custom units, but those were using pre-existing figures, not custom ones). And though I marveled at pictures of others', I never really had a desire to make my own. Well, after reading a couple threads, I decided to go to my local Wal-Mart and see if I couldn't find some aquarium junk that would work in my quest. Long story short, I found some, found the hot-glue gun, and now have my own custom jungle (which, IMHO, is pretty good). I haven't gotten a game in since I made it (last week) but I have finally gotten to try putting together some maps I've always wanted to see on my table, particularly Shrine of Mo-Ne-Ca and Elswein Plateau. So I'm pleased, and only had to spend like 10 bucks.

Heroscape in stores- Which reminds me of another anecdote; a couple weeks ago, right before I set myself on making my jungle, I played a game of 'scape with a friend, and in the middle of it all it came up that 'scape had been axed, which surprised my friend (he only plays with me once in a while, which meant he probably hadn't really thought about it much for the two years), and he said he thought he saw some at our FLGS. So we went and sure enough, there was a castle set, a couple wave one dealios, a templar cavalry booster, and I think the elf hero booster. It was interesting to see it on shelves, knowing it had been pronounced dead for over two years. But hey, if you want something, PM me and I'll get it for you (well, I'll make you pay me, but I'll see if I can't get it to you).

Wrap-Up- Well, this is about the part of the blog where I've lost track of everything I was going to say, and can't remember enough to warrant more typing, and seeing that this thing has already gotten pretty long, I'm about ready to just end it all and hit that post now button below these words. But first, I'll give myself 10 seconds to see if anything that I wanted to write pops up.

Nope. Nothing in particular. Just a hearty pat on the back to all y'all out there keeping this site alive. I don't know how noisy I'll be on the site (haven't been noisy so far), but I'll definitely be checking in more than I reasonably should.

'Til next time (whenever/whatever that is), take it easy.

Welcome back, Bigga! Thanks for providing the perspective - it can be easy to forget for those of us constantly in the trenches that many other community fansites die off when the thing they're fans of goes away.

Welcome back! It's really neat how 'scapers has survived so long. I don't see it going away anytime soon either!

Welcome back Bigga,

Thanks for the compliments. Glad the c3V can surprise fans who peek in to see what's been going on since Hasbro called it quits.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys.

@boromir, trust me, I was heavily tempted to buy the templars. The only thing stopping me then was that they had a $30 dollar price tag (all the other sets were usual price), and the fact that I'm fairly low on money right now. But we'll see if fortune smiles on me soon... I don't know anyone else who will buy them.

Templars - Yes!

Well met!

They're great at 90 (Delta) points a squad! You'll regret it if you don't - maybe not today - maybe not tomorrow, but someday.
