Testing (Tae Kwon Do).

It's been a few months since I started back up in Tae Kwon Do, and it seems like it's been the only constant in my life recently.

Our belt system uses a two part ranking system for colored belts. you can either be a color recommended or color decided. Right now I am Blue Decided, which means I am ready to test for Brown Recommended. Then I have to train for three months until the next testing cycle, where I can become Brown Decided (then red, then on to black).

Anyway I'm going to be testing for Brown Recommended this Saturday. I'm pretty excited. It seems like this means I'm officially a part of the family. The people there have been great, instructors, students, everyone. It's been a good experience, and I hope that I can stick with it for a long time.

I'm also a little nervous. I have my form down to a science. I'm not at all worried about that. I'm a little less sure about my board break, but I've been able to do it pretty consistently in training. Sparring is what I'm really worried about. I am absolutely terrible here, and apparently raising your hands up when a foot is flying at you is a harder concept than most people think.

I'm pretty sure that I can get enough points from my form and board break to make up for sparring, but I'm still a little nervous about the whole thing. I'm sure it won't be as bad as I think now.

Well met!

Keep your hands up all the time. It's easier to lower them than it is to raise them.

Its been my experience in Tae Kwon Do that most instructors put the least amount of emphasis on sparring during testing. If you are prepared to test, I assume your instructor has seen you sparring repeatedly in class, and thus knows what you are capable of. Testing is a time of nerves, and he'll want to see how you handle that, but most people don't fail because they did not completely outmatch their opponent in sparring.

Good luck.
