Tandem Designs, Part 1: The Theory
Author: Son of Arathorn

As anyHeroScape player knows, factions are a core part of the game. But what is a faction? In the simplest terms, I believe that a faction is a group of two or more units that are designed to work well together for greater effect on the battlefield. The most basic example of a faction is a simple bonding squad and hero. In this example, each works better with the other than it would on its own. Early examples of this relationship in HeroScape include Grimnak and the Blade Gruts, the Knights of Weston and the Viking Champions ... the list goes on and on. As the development of the game moved forward, the initial pairs and small groups of units grew to include more heroes, more squads, and the connections between those units grew with each addition to a faction. Mind you,

Unit Strategy Review - Kato + Ashigaru Army

Unit Strategy Review
Unit: Ashigaru Harquebus, Ashigaru Yari, Kato Katsuro
Author: Dysole

The Kato + Ashigaru army (or Asian Invasion as some like to call it) doesn’t see a whole ton of play. At first glance, 200 points for an average figure combined with a bunch of units with average powers and 1 defense doesn’t seem all that formidable. However, as we shall see, these units all work together to create something greater than the sum of their parts.

First let’s take a closer look at their stats:

Analyzed Statistics
Kato Katsuro
Cost – 200 (Queen Class Unit)
Size – Medium (Vulnerable/Somewhat concealable)
Life – 5 (Average)
Move – 6 (Fast)
Range – 1 (Melee)
Attack – 4 (Above Average)
Defense – 4 (Average)
Kato Katsuro's Command – take a turn with

Codex: Relaunch

In May of 2015, the Heroscapers Codex released Issue Nine of its second volume: Rebirth. In the editor’s note, we explained that this was the last print issue. We mentioned vague details about a site upgrade, rumored to be coming in June of 2015, which would allow us to continue online.

We are here to tell you that the long wait is finally over. The Heroscapers Codex is back!

When we shut down in May, our plan was to restart in June when the site would be upgraded. In the meantime, we decided to sort out some organizational issues and get ready for the relaunch.

Unfortunately the site upgrade has been delayed for quite a while now. After a few months, we realized we needed to stop waiting and develop a new plan. So, with the help of Xotli, we set up this account for the Codex.

At the same time, we reorganized our contributors and smoothed out the submission process, allowing us to release material faster

Losing at Chess

Posted December 23rd, 2015 at 05:00 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I won't say that I’m bad at chess.

Even though that's what I really want to say. I have always said that. It's not a game I enjoy. Only my eldest son plays at my house, and he's a minor chess champion. I have only beat him three times in ten years.

I don't idle well. I like games that move quickly. I like dynamic things. ADHD is my life philosophy. Chess always seemed to take too long, to drag on and ultimately I didn't care that much. It wasn't that interesting.

Well my son and I have been playing again. I always agree when he suggests it because to be honest I feel like I could improve a great deal. I hate being sucky. I am always hoping to learn something.

He'd say “do you want to play chess?”

and I would answer “sure, but I’m going to lose.” or “sure, if you don't mind beating me yet again.” or “sure but you're going to thwamp me.”

one day my son turned to me and said “why do you always say that?”...

Musings from Sunny Negril!

Posted December 19th, 2015 at 09:41 AM by kolakoski

[From my tablet]

Just thinking how cool a Heroscape Holiday would be, as I gaze out at the ocean from my seat at one of the four round tables that would be ideal for a four player game. The weather has been near perfect during the last two weeks and, although swimming, walking, and cabbing (very inexpensive, especially compared to New York) to the beach, the numerous bars and restaurants, and hanging with friends we've made over the years (local and tourist) have kept me awfully busy, there has been plenty of leisure time for the local game - dominoes - that I can easily imagine devoting some of for 'Scaping. I wonder how many 'Scapers out there would be interested in a week or two, at pre-season rates (here at the Castle, around $60/night), of swimming, swilling, smoking, and 'Scaping outdoors here in beautiful Negril, Jamaica?
