X Winging

Posted October 22nd, 2015 at 01:52 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Scape has its seasons, especially as my family grows older. Now my children spend their spare time looking for jobs or taking extra classes rather than playing with miniature figures. Iím still addicted to minis but we donít play every day like we used to. Can you believe that we played five or six days a week for five or six years?

So we played a bit of Scape and now not so much. Somehow an X wing game ended up in the living room. Oh, that makes it sound shop-lifted- it wasnít.

One of the compromises weíve made as time has passed is that now we play games while we eat supper. Itís nice to have a sit down in chairs family meal but with not enough time to play games we combined the two- itís not very civilized, Iíll admit. So we have good food and we sit on the living room floor and play whatever we want. Multitasking!

We played the simple game of X wing as the rules suggested before we played the real version. (reminded me of something...) The simple version wasnít the greatest but it was a good idea to learn the basics before we got into the real game.

You probably know that the base game has two tie fighters and one x wing. (I suggested the tie fighters were called such because they look like bow ties. My kids wouldnít believe me though, it sounded too silly. Who named these ships?)

We quickly discarded the 2 foot square playing area idea and decided to use the whole living room floor. That sounds potentially disastrous, but generally itís just more flexible. Only once did it turn into a long range escape scenario. I had a badly damaged tie fighter and I took off just to think and try and turn and come back. I lost anyway so there wasnít much point to it.

I tend to play the imperials every time. I blew the first couple of games I played but then it became fun to fly my pair of tie fighters and fork it to the rebel scum. Sometimes I won and sometimes I didnít, but it seemed like an okay game.

You know how the story goes, once you start playing you want more ships. We live in Canada, and the ships are about three times as expensive here as they are across the border in the US. Which meant we didnít get any new ships for a while. Then a friend brought some over the border for me and we had all kinds of air power: another tie fighter, tie phantom, an E-wing, a Y-wing, and an M3A interceptor.

We had a lot of fun with these new ships and playing bigger games. But games with more ships seemed to take longer and longer. It takes time for everyone to move and fancy flying takes extra moves too. We tried some scenarios, adding in asteroid fields, objectives and bases. And then we stopped.

I think we will play again; itís just out of season for now. Weíve had enough. Plus the new ships are stronger and change the game play, making my three tie fighters dependent on good luck, which can be a little frustrating.

There are ships Iíd still like to have but theyíre so expensive and we get bored if the game is longer than an hour and a half.

In my search for cheaper components I saw single cards going on Ebay for $65. Thatís crazy, isnít it?

Iím getting the itch to play again but I have to wait until everyone gets the same itch. With limited time we can usually only play one game per evening so we try and pick something that everyone agrees on. It was bound to happen as everyone gets older, but still it makes me sad.

Looking forward to the new movie though....

Miniature market, my friend. Slashes 1/3 off the price of all the ships. Buy en masse to make the shipping worth it.

I love miniature market but the shipping to Canada is hefty, plus the Canadian dollar is really low right now, and then there's duty at the border. If you add it all up it's actually cheaper to buy in Canada, which I guess is what they're trying to do. But it's expensive
