Islandscape and the Valhalla Society

Well met!

If I go to Islandscape as the sole representative of the Valhalla Society, just to avoid the possibility of disappointing a little girl (and her illustrious father) whom I have never met, I'm going to have to come up with a competitive army. At the moment, I'm thinking along the following lines . . .

140 Othkurik
140 Phantom Knights x 2
100 Syvarris
80 Raelin
40 Theracus

I know I am entitled to an additional ten points, but this army looks pretty solid (and extremely fast), and will allow me some interesting options if I get to the finals.

The above is usually uttered to stave off the very real pain that words can deliver. Many on this site take pride in being able to say whatever they wish, and they can, and they do, defiantly choosing not to take responsibility for how they may affect those to whom they are directed. I am not immune . I'm just sayin' .

The Valhalla Society is a Romantic idea I came up with when I first started playing Heroscape. Think the Last Samurai (without the suicidal charge). Oversimplified, members eschew guns [see my blog for detailed info]. The response to this idea was varied, from bemused scepticism to outright hostility, but there was no groundswell of support and I, being the only member (and feeling the pinch of lacking Knights, Aubriens, etc., to add variety for competitive tournament play), had pretty much decided to abandon the idea.

Islandscape Preparations - Day 1

Grishnak has just announced that Islandscape will be held on July 10th. As usual, it will be run using GenCon Championship rules (armies of 510, with the addition of 90, 110 or 130 points for the finals). At the moment, I am thinking along the lines of the following:

150 Q-10
120 Grimnak
110 Minions
80 Blades x 2
50 Nerak

[Before you can ask, I am eschewing Valhalla Society restrictions here. Kaemon, Syvarris, et al., have been fighting for months and deserve some R&R . . . ]

Anyways, I think I've addressed most of the Idiot's Guide criteria with this army. Also, it makes it a natural thing to add Atlaga ar 90 points (and another squad of Minions at 110, which I'll have to borrow from Chas ). At 130 I could take another squad of Blades (borrowed again from my good buddy Chas) and the aforementioned Atlaga. In any event, it is a relatively unique army, and should...

Dungeon Scenario Idea (based on Chas' Treasure Mountain)

[Chas' Treasure Mountain [see previous Blog entry] was an adventurer's dream. It has inspired my creative juices . . . ]

Marro Mountain Treasure Hunt

Three (500 point) teams of treasure hunters are dispatched by the same wizard, each tasked with retrieving one of the two remaining Eyes of the Marro, legendary jewels supposedly prised from the God Idol of Marro by Su-Bak-Na himself, and on display in his Throne Room, deep within Marro Mountain.

The single, gated entrance to the Throne Room is protected by specially constructed defensive positions, within a rough palisade. On a special platform, high over the gate, stands DW9000 and a squad of Zettian Guards. On other platforms around the gate are 4 squads of Stingers. At the center of the palisade, within an elevated trough filled with swamp water, placed directly behind and above a +1 Defense Treasure Glyph (useable only by an adventurer Hero), are a squad of Marro Warriors....

Into the Unknown - Chas' Way

As much as I have enjoyed all the planning and playing in the Mineola Mixed-Marvel Tournament Series, when Chas emailed me last week with the scenario details for last night's game, I was more excited about our impending conflict than I have been about anything 'scape for a long time.

The scenario that Chas presented to History Dude, our friend Nick, and myself was the epitome of Chas' vision of Heroscape as adventure, compared to which the tournament scene is rather dry (in recent experience).

Chas presented us with two maps of roughly equal size. The first, which Chas called Treasure Mountain, was a gently graded, long hill, topped with a large pool, with two narrow towers above two gates, whose entrances were at the bottom of the hill, to the right and left, with roads on the right and left borders, all with a plethora of trees and bushes, and ladders to the towers and from the heights to the gates.
