If You Were a Jedi...

Posted May 13th, 2009 at 05:43 PM by NecroBlade
Warning: the following is based on the Order 66 novel, part of the Republic Commando series by Karen Traviss. If you don't want anything spoiled, stop reading now.

Here's the situation:

You've been taken away from your parents and raised from a young age to believe in the Force, all that is good, and defend the galaxy from evil. You're a female Jedi. Well, recent ex-Jedi. You, along with much of the rest of the galaxy and at least a few fellow saber-swingers, feel like the Order has been falling apart lately and no longer performs as it should. Following in the footsteps of your fellow former Jedi and friend, you have just quit the Order. One of the main reasons for doing so is that you feel the other Jedi, even the Council, have no compassion for the new clone army. They are simply using them as a means of ending the war.

As a Jedi general, you, on the other hand, have gotten personal with them. You see them as men, not clones, and believe they deserve better lives than fighting and dieing of old age while still young. You've even married one and given him a son. You, your ex-Jedi friend, and your clone husband, along with a handful of other clones and civilians are planning to escape the army and the war, finding a cure for the clones' advanced aging, and living out full, long lives away from it all.

With the invasion of Coruscant and the final stages of Palpatine's wicked plot, Order 66 has been issued. Having lost faith in the Order yourself, you're actually inclined to believe in the supposed Jedi coup. On Coruscant while all this is going down, you now find yourself having to conceal your identity as a Jedi to get offworld and escape with the others. You have your lightsaber and your fallen Master's lightsaber, but have gone undetected as you approach a checkpoint manned by clones just before the RV point with the other escapees.

The clones stop a couple children, teenagers, in front of you and check their bags. Lightsabers spill out and a cry of "Jedi! Get them!" goes out among the clones. The teens and half-a-dozen or so others their age in the crowd ignite their blades and the fight is on. As you watch, one clone leaps toward one of the Padawans intending to tackle, just as the young Jedi sweeps his lightsaber foward. Now is your moment to act. What do you do?

If I truly believed in compassion and had quit the Order for this reason, then I would be forced to put my money where my mouth was and help out the Padawans. There was no compassion when the Jedi were killed without trial, so it is my duty to help protect these innocent young ones who are obviously not attempting a coup on the government.

Having said that, I would probably not do much more than fight against this one particular checkpoint before attempting to move on and start researching a cure. This one incident is a test to see if I truly care about what I say I care about.

P.S. Great idea!

Thanks, ET, I couldn't've said it better myself. That's exactly how I would've done it. I want to see how a few other people play it before I reveal how it really went down.

Well, personally, I would get the hell out of there before they realize I have lightsabers and used to be a Jedi. It's not my fight anymore.

I mean, the clones don't seem to be the most logical bunch, y'know?

I'd need to know what is possible, but I'd probably try to create a huge distraction of some sort wielding the force, but not exposing who I am. Attempt to break up the fight without engaging in it, give the kids with lightsabers a chance to escape. On the whole, though, I'm not sure given your setup that she has any reason to do anything other than possibly help the clones (without obviously using the force) as a way to improve her own chances of getting past the checkpoint.

If I try to help the clones, they'll shoot me down as if I was against them. If I try to help the Jedi, all the clones on Coruscant would be after me. Neither of these are particularly good options, so I would just get out of there before the clones realize I'm a Jedi.

Or, I could be Etain and get sliced by a lightsaber myself. Horrible part of the book, btw, really disappointed me.

But really, I would have just tried to save my own hide.

panakalego obviously just told you all what really happened: she Force-pushed the Jedi back and jumped in the way of his lightsaber. She died.

So yes, it was a horrible part of the book and very disappointing. I was just forgiving KT and learning to love the series again and she ruins it all with one scene.

Not only did Etain die (good riddance, hated her character), she behaved in a way NO Jedi, soon-to-be-ex or not would have! I could understand trying to do what she could without being detected so she could continue her own life, but anything less than that is completely unacceptable for a Jedi.

She definitely should've jumped in there and redeemed herself if not the Jedi in the eyes of the bystanders (who, btw, are described as accidentally being cut in half by the padawans trying to defend themselves. Are you kriffing kidding me?! No Jedi, no matter how unskilled, would swing so wildly in a crowd as to end undeserving lives).

And don't get me started on the fact that a Mandalorian, completely untrained in the use of a lightsaber, picks one up and wades into the melee, killing padawans left and right. I don't care if he was in full Mando armor, he's screwed (the lightsaber described as bouncing off the neck or the armor would've beheaded him; he would've deserved that, too, since he's all about saving his "children" yet here he is mercilessly killing them).

So yes, horrible scene that ruined the series for me, moreso than anything else I disliked about it because it showed a Jedi being so very un-Jedi-like.
