FFC #29 - Trying to make a forest with no trees

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #29

It's been awhile since I've given you a true update on what's happening with my fan fiction. The reason for that is because nothing has really been happening with my fan fiction. I think it's time I tell you why, and what I'm doing about it.

On my computer I have a fan fiction folder, with sub-folders for the individual fan fictions I've written, as well as those which I've started but never finished (you've heard of most of them). Looking through that list of titles, I can remember how I always had a general idea of where I was headed next. Whether while I wrote the fan fiction, or shortly afterwards, I always knew what I was going to do. I always had a general idea where I was going.

Well, for the past few months (ever since I finished writing Dan's Tale and even before), I haven't had that. I've had a vague idea of where I would like to go, but it consisted of little more than disconnected story fragments...

FFC #28 - A new land

Posted June 4th, 2019 at 06:42 PM by TGRF
As some of you may know, I have moved. I've gone from Oregon to Idaho, and the two states couldn't be more different. Idaho will demand some lifestyle changes, but they are changes for the best, and I'm looking forward to them. But for now, the time has come to update you all on where my fan fiction stands.

During the move I anticipated getting a lot of worldbuilding done and working on developing a sequel to Dan's tale. As is usually the case with my plans however, things turned out differently.

Dan's tale fell through. It's still technically possible that it will happen, but at this point I would consider it highly unlikely. There were problems with themes, character motivations, plot holes, logic holes, and just the whole thing in general.

Meanwhile, interest in BaoP was... well it was still there, but there were other things happening. I did get some worldbuilding done, but due to the unfortunate tendency of my fictions to run through iterations...

How I would write Star Wars IX

Posted June 3rd, 2019 at 06:34 PM by TGRF
I try to keep an optimistic attitude about Star Wars. The last two films have been... well not that great. I know some people loved them, and I wish I could say the same, but it is regrettably not true.

Episode VII felt like JJ was being super cautious, keeping things open-ended and following a pre-proven plot from A New Hope. The similarities were palpable.

Episode VIII I actually greatly disliked. It didn't feel like a Star Wars movie, and it felt like Ryan Johnson was deliberately taking the fans' expectations and throwing them in our collective faces while trying to feed us twists which destroyed everything good in the most pointless manner possible. Luke throwing the lightsaber, Snoke's death, that kind of thing. It was just bad.

However, as I said I try to remain optimistic. I feel like JJ understands what Star Wars is all about, and how it should end, and is genuinely trying to do his best to deliver on that and on everything the fans want....
