Cave of Shadows: Part 3

Posted February 3rd, 2011 at 03:22 PM by AliasQTip
In a previous blog entry I demonstrated what goes in to creating one of my Adventure Pack terrain pieces. This time around I invite you to discover what goes on in my mind when Iím designing a new battlefield. This is the third entry of a three part blog, the first and second entries of which can be found at these links respectively.

The Playtesting
Playtesting, playtesting, playtesting. Itís the only way to make sure a map and its scenario are working perfectly. My wife and I usually play at least three games on any given map to be sure itís playing well. If not, tweeks and more games are needed in order to hone in on a scenario.

Playtesting Game

Usually the first round of playtesting is designed to break the map. We field armies that will find the weaknesses in the overall map design. For example, the Airborne Elite have the tendency to break most...

Cave of Shadows: Part 2

The Story
The HeroScape Compendium is a fantastic resource for giving your map the feeling and motivation it deserves. If youíve never given it a look, I highly recommend you do. I almost always reference existing places and/or people from the HeroScape universe when writing the descriptions that accompany my maps.

For this map, as noted in the previous blog entry of this series, Iím building upon the Cave of Shadows mentioned in the Quest for Concanís Castle. Itís an icy cave somewhere in the Thaelenk Tundra and provides a path to Concanís Castle. My map definitely looks the part; it has ice and snow as well as plenty of dark shadows.

Although...

The Ice Cave by A. Hodges

The Idea
Inspiration comes from all sources. I had long wanted to do and icy cave battlefield and while doing some research for another battlefield (Yes, I do research!) I came across this entry in the HeroScape Compendium:
Cave of Shadows
Dark and icy cave that may be located on or close to the Thaelenk Tundra. This cave provides a path to Concanís Castle.

Comic Panel

I remembered it from the last HeroScape comic, The Quest for Concanís Castle. I thought, ďGosh, I think Iíve found my icy cave.Ē Mind you, I...

HeroScape Chat Room

Posted November 8th, 2010 at 04:15 PM by AliasQTip
Letís chat! If youíve ever wanted to sit down with a few of your online buddies and talk ĎScape but have never been able to because the live in different states, or counties for that matter, nowís your chance. Iíve just opened a public chat space for HeroScape on my website. Check it out!

Itís easy to use and more importantly free! If you do visit, please use your HeroScapers handle so we know who you are.

Some things it can and cannot do:
- You can register your screen name if you so choose. You donít have to.
- You can create your own private chat rooms.
- You cannot, as of yet, roll dice. Boy do I want to be able to roll dice. Iím still working on that. For now, it's the honor system.

I haven't exactly worked out a great way to play a game through the chat room but it'll come to me. (With your help.) VirtualScape can be used to create a co-ordinate system to track positions...

Evolution of an Adventure Pack

Posted October 31st, 2010 at 04:05 PM by AliasQTip
I thought you guys might be interested in how I design one of my Adventure Packs. If youíre not familiar with them yet, theyíre paper-craft accessories that can add theme and function to battlefields you create. You can check out all of my AdvPack creations on my HeroScape site:

Like all things, it starts with an idea. For a long time I thought HeroScape needed some sandbag bunkers. In the past Iíve used the cheap variety you might find in packages of plastic army men. They worked well but I couldnít share them with others. You either had them or you didnít. Iíve also built bunkers just out of HeroScape tiles; like I did in the Guardian Bunkers Battlefield but they didnít quite look like sandbag bunkers. So, one day, I decided to make a Sandbag Bunker Adventure Pack.

Initial Sketches
