Scaper of the Week Interview #68 -- rednax

Scaper of the Week Interview #68

This week's Scaper is the youngest to date both is age and member of the site (he joined in 2009). He is also our second Hangouter (besides good ol' Pumpkin King).

He also has an alliance with EEEVVVVVIIIIILLLLL... Read on to know more about this week's Scaper:

-Scaper of the Week #68 -

rednax

Who are you?

Who am I? That's a good question. Some might say I'm a 'scaper. I like to think of myself more as a musician. But you can call me Alex.

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?

My avatar is a simple GIF called dude-in-a-box. The origin of it goes all the way back to seventh grade typing class when my classmates and I would entertain ourselves after we completed our assignments by going on to a website called pointlesssites.com. I clicked on one website, found this guy, and thought it was a creative yet simple avatar.

As for my username, I had no idea what my username should be for a while. I didn't want to associate myself to anything like a Heroscape figure and I didn't have enough creativity to invent this random name out of the blue. So I went with a similar idea as Retlaw and Onacara. I spelled my name backwards.

Alex -> Xela

I thought this sounded somewhat stupid. So I tried my full name.

Alexander -> Rednaxela

I thought this one was too long.

Xander -> Rednax

Aha!

Age: Rednax is almost two years old. As for how old I am, who's counting anyway?

Occupation?

Soy un estudiante de escuela secundaria.

Allegiance and why?

I pledge allegiance every morning to the flag of the United States of America, but that's only a coverup for my true allegiance. I have yet to tell the president that my true allegiance lies with Utgar - at least for the time being.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?

I got into Heroscape in December of '07 with a couple other users on the site - Yakroller and XC_Runner.

Yakroller's son had got Heroscape for Christmas and they invited me over to play. And that was that.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?

The same reason the 67 'Scapers before me probably said - customizability. I love all the freedom that is left up to the players when playing a game - the terrain, the figures, the scenarios. The possibilities are truly infinite.

Favorite Unique Hero and why?
He has good offense, good survivability, speed, and he doesn't sparkle in the sun light. He's none other than Cyprien Esenwein.

Favorite Uncommon Hero and why?

I really like the Werewolf Lord. He is just so thematic. Plus, he helps out the other wolves a lot.

Favorite Common Hero and why

I'm a fan of the Arrow Gruts, so I'll have to say the Swog Rider. Most people just think of them as support, but I also like to use them for offense every once in a while.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?

Poof! Nakita Agents!

Favorite Common Squad and why?

Ever play three squads of Minions and Taelord? If you thought Minions were tough before, you should see them now.

Zombies of Morindan are also fun

Favorite Custom Unit and why?

I don't really look at custom units a lot. I do however like dok's Zombie Hulk - especially when he's played correctly, Grom.

Favorite Special Ability and why?

I like bonding a lot. I think more squds should have them - the Anubians, the Snipers, the Venocs. It doesn't change how they're played, really. It just makes them a little more competitive.

Venoc Vipers of Marro Drones?

Marro Drones. I would prefer the Vipers if 1) I could remember to roll for frenzy and 2) Be able to actually get frenzy.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?

I would swap the official Hatamoto Taro card with the prototype. That's pretty much it.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?

I love the community's creativity, humor, discussions, wit, and most of all, kindness. Everyone also has his or her own little quirks and personality that makes everyone on this site unique. I am honored to be a part of it.

Favorite HeroScape moment:

A couple tournaments a go, we switched armies after very game. For the very last game, I got a Deathwalker army. After much deliberation, I found the perfect time to use Deathwalker 7000's Explosion Special Attack. Grombloodboy, finished with his game walked by and said, "Don't roll a one!"

Do I need to even say what happened?

The next time I played with Deathwalker 7000, I did just as Grom said and didn't roll a one. I rolled a two.

Another board game you enjoy and why?

Uhhhhh . . . scrabble? In all honesty, this is the most complicated game I've ever played. I think my head would explode if I tried to learn Warhammer 40K. I might start playing Summoner Wars this summer, but other than, Heroscape is pretty much it.

I also like playing cards a lot - poker, rummy, yuker.

Three true things and one lie about yourself:
1. A Tokyo-based newspaper with a daily circulation of about 10 million papers wrote a story about me.
2. I have dual citizenship with the United States and Vietnam.
3. I know the countries of the world by heart.
4. There is a room in my house that often has at least five instruments in it.

Other interests?
Music. I love listening to, playing, and composing music - pretty much any genre.

I've recently fell in love with a theater group from the University of Michigan known as Team Starkid. They have produced a couple amazing musicals that are very funny. They are most well known for their parodies of Harry Potter, A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel. If you like Harry Potter, or are just curious, go check them out. They are very entertaining.

I also love history, particularly modern. I find it so fascinating.

Four Fun Favorites

Favorite TV Show: I don't watch much TV, but I like watching sitcoms. I like Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond amongst other shows.

Favorite Movie Of All Time: This is very hard. I'm not sure I've seen enough movies in my short life to make a good call. I am a fan of Alfred Hitchcock, in particular Rear Window and Dial M for Murder, but I also like the simple stuff like Toy Story 3.

Favorite book: I like a lot of books. Recently, I've found pleasure in reading Animal Farm and the Da Vinci Code. I also enjoy books by George Carlin.

Favorite food: This is so hard, because I'll eat about anything. I think I'll go with pizza.

What do you think of the Marro Hive?

I think it is very fun, but can be difficult to use. If only someone in the Unit Strategy Reviewer's Circle could write and article about it.

How did you obtain your title "Runa's Favorite Minion"?

I was playing Runa, Atlaga, and Minions x3 against Q9, Q10, and Blastatrons x3. Runa used her Helm of Mitonsoul and rolled two 20's for Q9 and Q10. At the point, I posted it on Heroscapers in the Book of Runa and someone gave me this title.

How long have you been playing the cello and piano? Any personal favorites you have created? Who is your favorite composer?

I have played cello for four years and piano for six. I've composed a lot, but I have yet to complete any compositions. I like composing a lot of different kind of music ranging from R&B to Jazz to Rock to Classical. I like a lot of different kinds of music.

As for my favorite composer, that would be Michael Jackson. The guy didn't write all of his own music, but he wrote a lot of it. I am obsessed with his music.

I am also a fan of film composers such as John Williams, Henry Mancini, and Klaus Badelt.

Do you have any more maps in the making? Your best maps seem to combine Swamp and Jungle together very effectively.

Not really. I love map making, but I've been lacking in inspiration and motivation recently. I might get back into it. Who knows? I do like using swamp and jungle because they're easy to use together.

It appears The Community Playtesting Thread needs some light shed on it. Care to describe your goals of this project?

My goal is to hopefully allow cartographers to fine tune their maps even if they might not have as much time as they might need to playtest it. It's a community effort, so you guys (yes, I'm looking at you) have to make it work. I'll help guide it along, but I can't do it by myself.

But if you like making maps or playing on maps, check it out.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?

Yes. I haven't played with many people from Heroscapers, so anyone would be nice for a change of pace. It would also be fun to play against MegaSilver or any of the other Hangouters.

What message do you have for the community?

This community has been so great the past few years. All I can say is, keep up the good work.

What Units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?

4th Massachusetts Line vs. Marro Stingers

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
Gosh. I thought this was going to be easier. I figured most of the people I would choose for SotW would be picked before me.

I have to choose a guy who is just amazing. He contributes so much to C3V, has organized the past few MI tournaments, and he's just really nice overall.

The next 'Scaper of the Week is . . .
Spoiler Alert!

Very nice interview, and with the selection of ZBeeblebrox I forsee the SotW selections coming closer and closer to the CoNers.

I'm going to go with #3 for the lie. It's just so...normal. My brother did that.

I'm a Hitcock fan too, Rednax. Rear Window was really good. Ever watched North by Northwest or Vertigo?

Number three is the lie. There are a lot of countries and they're changing all the time. I'm not sure if anybody "knows them by heart."

Great interview. That Runa story is one of the best ever. Great to see the MI 'scapers getting some love. Cool group. I have to say Rednax I am pretty amazed with your varied interests. Most adults do not have that kind of perspective. You have restored my faith in today's youth. Looking forward to seeing you at the next tourney.

Great interview Rednax, I am honored that you chose me for the next SotW.

And I think #3 is a lie, too many tiny obscure countries in the world to memorize them all.

Sadly, I have not watched Vertigo. I was hoping to watch North by Northwest but never got around to it.

I am glad I restored your faith in today's youth, Tornado. Not all of us like Jersey Shore and and Justin Bieber.

No need to thank me, ZBeeblebrox. You deserve it.

It was sort of eerie how similar we seem from reading the interview, with cello and music and maps and age and all. I'm also going to guess #3 is the lie.

I'm guessing 1 is a lie.

From what I can tell from the picture of the back of his head in ZBeeblebrox's blog, he could be Vietnamese. 3 doesn't seem impossible, and 4 seems likely.

Congratulations, Alex! Also congrats to ZBeeblebrox for next month's nomination! He's been great at the last few MI tournaments.

I cast my vote with #2 as the lie, because I have seen every other option confirmed as true.

I'm going to say #1 is the lie, there *was* a story in a foreign paper, but it wasn't Tokyo. Now I'm off to get cartographically workshopped...

We are pretty similar, arp12.

Thank you, XC_runner.

I plan on revealing the lie Saturday.

Also, I just thought of something that would have made a good truth. This guy is my uncle's brother-in-law.
