If I Ran Heroscape (Part 2: Armies)

Posted July 15th, 2008 at 11:16 AM by Velenne
In my previous blog, I asked what you thought you could do to improve Heroscape overall. I've since had a few ideas on ways to improve some existing armies which I'll share now. But first, let's agree on what I mean by "armies":

Armies (n) - A group of themed and synergistic units in Heroscape typically but not necessarily belonging to the same Archkyrie General. Ex: Orcs, Knights, Vipers.

Now on with the show...

Cowboys - I'd love it if these guys had an Ulginesh-type figure that would allow you to easily field them. It would be somewhat conditional though, since cowboys don't work together by nature. Probably a d20 roll that let you take a turn with a different cowboy each time you succeeded with it- almost like a frenzy. A squad of cowboys would help too.

Gladiators - These guys could really use some squad lovin'. It's a scary thought given Spartucus' powerful enhancement but why else would he cost so much? I'd love to see some animal handlers (mind controlling beasts?), chariot drivers, or swarms of peasant fodder. Stick to the melee thing though.

Primadons - The Nakita's movement bonding felt very forced to me. I thought these guys deserved a full fleshing out among Vydar's armies. Good melee common squads are a rarity and I'd hoped to see some really amazing sculpts here too. "Tough" is such a neat power, it seems like an army based around it in the same way the Samurai are based on Counterstrike would be fun.

Undead - We've got vampires, zombies, a mummy, and ghosts. I'd love to see a lich who can create a skeleton or zombie with a d20 roll out of any destroyed unit, a 5-man squad of skeletons of various sizes, flesh-eating ghouls... there are a lot of directions you could go here. Right now the undead seem to mostly devour the living and add to their own. I would stick with this theme.

Orc Beasts - With Mimring, Krug, and the Swogs, you wouldn't think these guys need much more but I disagree. I'd love to see a Heavy Swog Cavalry unit, maybe 50 points, with the same enhancements, no disengage, 6 move, and 5a/5d. That would give the arrow gruts another melee heavy hitter. Another option is a high-cost (100+), unique hero with a Double Attack-granting aura for Orc Archers.

Wolves - I'm a big fan of the White Wolf werewolf setting, so anything more with these guys would be welcome. More Darklords please! The Anubis/Egyptian theme can be more fully explored as well. I'm thinking of flying Sphynxes who can carry multiple units, giant wolves who serves as the Alphas, and Darklord wizards who can mask the approach of the Wolves with a sort of "fog" as long as he's alive, reducing the Range of every figure on the field.

Kyrie - Just...more of them and of varying costs. The 80-point Jandar Kyrie need a few counterparts who enhance the armies of the generals they're associated with. I shouldn't be surprised to see a Kyrie flying with any of the armies in Heroscape. Their presence should almost be a staple, visually tying the themes back into the setting as a reminder of why WW2 Airborne are shooting at acid-spitting dragons.

Wow, there are some great ideas here! I really wish we had a few more Primadons, tough seems like a fun ability.

I think in general, they ought to make much more use out of the Common Hero mechanic. Swog Riders are just genius, and I like your Heavy Swog Rider idea.

People talk about the Armoc Vipers, and until the Redcoats came out, the Sacred Band needing a boost. I think the best way to handle helping these squads out (and perhaps the Groks too) without making the Romans too much better would be to add some Common Warlords that specifically boost their squads, much like Swog Riders do for Arrow Gruts.

The same could maybe even be done for Orc or Human Champions, Predators, Darklords, etc... To go with your Primadon idea, a 2-3 figure Melee Gorillinator squad would be great if it bonded with Alphadons and we saw a common one come out too.

Or heck, maybe just have a few Common Hero Gladiators to go with Spartacus, that come in packs of 3 or 4 or something.

5 A/3 D/ 5 M /1 R

Double Attack, and perhaps some sort of "I'm Spartacus!" move.

Great ideas!

For the cowboy hero, how about a Marshall figure with the power to ROUND UP THE POSSE that could let him activate 1 or more lawmen heros?

i'm with you on the kyrie thing. this war is in their world. you'd think they would want to help out more!i like the undead idea too, but i think we should have some mummy-support squads. as for the orcs, im really tired of seeing so many supporters. every tourny u see more and more orc based armies. GIVE IT A REST! if we're gonna see variety in armies, give us units that counter orcs and blastatrons.

I've played in three tourneys in the last 3 months and have yet to encounter a Grut army. As for a counter to them and Blastatrons... Zelrig.

I think these are all good points, especially the wolves, cowboys and gladiators. I somewhat disagree with the Orc Beasts: other units should be given a boost before they are.
