TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry 6

FFC #6 - 'Under Consideration'

I don't know if anyone watches the progress of my fan fictions in my signature. It doesn't really matter, as it's more a place for me to congratulate myself on how much progress I'm making (or lack thereof) than anything else.

Point is, if anyone has been watching my sig, they might have noticed that for a few days it's been saying my future novels are 'under consideration'. I know you've been dying to find out what that means, so I'll explain.

For those of you who don't know, one of my first attempts at writing with actual development was a trilogy set on Feylund centered around a powerful elf named Dilmir. The trilogy is refered to as the Dilmir trilogy.

It was my first foray into actually writing with a structure, and the first time I ever really considered writing as something more than just a fun hobby. It might have been that mindset. It might have been something else. The end result was that by the time the third book rolled around, I had decided that I could turn my Dilmir idea into an actual novel series. I removed the fan fictions (with some admin-help) and stored them on my computer, awaiting revision to 'novel standards'.

That was around the beginning of 2014. Over the past years, I've been working on the novels off and on, but I always kept coming back to the same problem: the theme.

If you've been following my writing progress, you'll know that I write based on a theme - a central message I'm trying to convey. I believe that doing so lends your writing a power, a drive, that nothing else can.

Unfortunately, not any old theme will do. You need a theme that you really believe in, one which you are really passionate about. Aside from preventing writer's block before it ever happens, being passionate about your theme spreads to your writing, and the reader can often sense that fire and drive in what he reads.

You can imagine what happens when you're working with a theme you aren't as interested in.

I recently realized that the theme for my novels, while certainly powerful, doesn't seem to have enough interest on my part. At least not enough for a supposedly unending series of novels.

I've rushed headlong into too many things to do so with something as big as my first novel. Therefore, I've decided to put them on hold until I can find the right theme. I'm sure it's out there. Everyone has some issue they are truly passionate about. I just can't define mine yet.

What does this mean for Dilmir? I can't say. It all depends on the new theme. If the new theme yields a story similar to Dilmir, then it will remain locked in my computer. But if it doesn't... Dilmir might be released once more. Possibly.

Dilmir does have some issues I would like to address. It's setting is also basically a patchwork of fantasy cliches, though I didn't know that when writing it. I went through a lot of iterations of what the Dilmir novels would look like, so I actually have a TON of material to draw on if I wanted to rewrite the whole thing and make the world/plot more original. Or I could just post it as is.

All that being said, nothing will be done with it until I at least have a direction for the new theme. And there is no telling when that will happen. It could happen anywhere from tomorrow to ten years from now.

Assuming it doesn't conflict with the new theme though, what do you think I should do? Post it as is, or go for a full rewrite, knowing what I know now?

Full rewrite of course. The most important thing is that you're happy with it. Would you be satisfied if you didn't rework it?

You're probably right. I might be satisfied if I posted it as is, because I would literally just be copy-pasting what is already there and not have to think about it. But it could be so much better, and I'd always want to go back and fix it.

Thanks for the input Sylvano!

I'd say post it as-is, but that'd only be so that I could read it.

As long as you don't have a publisher breathing down your neck, I'd say take advantage of the lack of deadline and work on it until you're satisfied.
