C3V brings you its first Special Release, otherwise known as:

Awakened Forest

Special Release 1

This one's been a long time coming, but we trust that it's worth the wait. Rather than waiting to fit this release into one of our traditional waves, we thought we would get it out to you all at once!

AWAKENED FOREST
Wildwood Monarch - Ullar
Wildwood Sentinel - Ullar
Wildwood Runner - Ullar

================

Wildwood Monarch

The concentrated essence of the forest, a living embodiment of nature, the Wildwood Monarch does two things well. Firstly, it is always growing, birthing smaller Wildwood seedlings all around itself. Secondly, it is a fierce protector of the forest, hitting hard with its vine-covered limbs. The Awakened Forest flows through the Monarch's very being, for the Monarch is its center, its heart, its trunk.

Wildwood Sentinel

The Wildwood Sentinels of the Awakened Forest are a curious group. Slow, for sure, but solid and dangerous up close. And if their Monarch is cut down, watch for one of them to contort its living body, growing in size and sprouting forth green tendrils. For the forest must live on, and so one of these woodland guardians must become the Monarch.

Wildwood Runner

By Wildwood standards, these seedlings are lightning fast. But these Runners are dangerous for more than their speed. Hardy and tenacious, these Runners can often survive long enough to replace a fallen Sentinel, doubling in size and in power. The Monarch may be the trunk, but it is the Runners that make enemies of the Awakened Forest quake in fear.

================

Our next wave is coming soon. Here's some of what to expect:

Quote:
All of you saw them. Swimming, squirming, maggot-like, at the edges of your vision. You punch through reality, you pierce the veil, you rend the universe asunder to pull your little toy soldiers from across the planes of existence....you didn't think you were unnoticed, did you? The arrogance. To think you could pluck pieces from the foundations of other worlds and think those spasming, grasping tendrils reaching for you from the black suns between time and space were merely a vision. The alternative was too horrible to contemplate, wasn't it?

Jandar, Vydar, Utgar....for all your posturing, for all your playing as gods and faux-omniscience, you put on blinders. You reached into the Wellsprings and you pulled what you thought was yours from the ether and dared not turn your head. You knew to look to your left or right was madness.

Madness. I lived in madness. Thrived in it. Only I, Valkrill, was mad enough to look, to turn my head and look at those shapes in the dark...and extend my hand.

None of you know what's coming. None of you.

- Letter from Valkrill to the other six Generals. Context unknown.
-------------------------------------------

We in the C3V know that it's a crazy time in this world, and we hope that you're happy and healthy wherever you are. We hope you take some time to try out this new faction, and keep helping us playtest as we get more releases ready. We've got Demons and Cultists and Lovecraft stuff coming, as well as more historical units, fantasy mainstays, and creepy crawlies. We're coming up on 10 years of C3V, and we hope to keep going for many more years (and your playtesting helps!).

Happy 'Scaping,

Cool idea for a faction. The three sizes and the way they evolve into each other reminds me of the board game Photosynthesis. I also like the symmetry of the the Monarch having +2 life and attack and -1 move versus the Sentinel, while the runner has -2 life and attack, but +1 move.

I feel like those move values are going to be really frustrating, though. How do Wildwoods avoid being kited into oblivion by practically any ranged unit?

If played correctly, Wildwoods will crush passive ranged attackers. Hold the Sentinels and Runners back and send out the Monarch again and again and again. They'll kill it from time to time, but so what?

Only question, with a move of 2, the monarch will never catch a ranged figure. A squad of 3 stingers need never get in range of the monarch. Thoughts? Can't wait to play them, just thinking about the strategy.

Boards are not infinitely large; they cannot run away forever. Worse, a player usually has more than just 3 Stingers, but can only move three per turn. Having a Monarch in your starting zone is painful.

The Wildwoods have more than just the Monarch to work with too. Even though they're slow, a Monarch and a Sentinel together can trap most anything. Runners can also be used, as they are quicker and can tie the enemy down.

Be careful with your runners. They are key to bringing everything else back. A single runner can grow to bring everything else back. They are the key to winning or loosing.

Just printed cards, got the Wildwood Monarch in the mail, painted the bases of some Pummelroot Elementals and am using Eilan Sidhe as proxies for Wildwood Runners--so psyched to try these guys out tomorrow evening. These guys seem to have a lot of depth of strategy and I can't wait to sink my teeth in!

Awesome, you're gonna love them SirD.

Remember that the runners are the key to the build; the best way to starve the rebirth cycle is to take down the runners first, then keep killing the new one each turn. Both players should be playing with an awareness of that.

Well done . Just ordered the Monarch and two Sentinels. We will be 3d printing our Runners. Thank you for including the .stl file. It will help us save some $$. Hope to see more .stl files (for alternate sculpts) available on future C3V releases for hard to find figures.

Incredible job C3G team. Great addition to the world of Heroscape and much needed distraction from all that is going on in the world.
