Scaper of the Week # 46 - Supergeek!

Posted April 18th, 2010 at 04:12 PM by rym
Well, here we are again with the latest 'Scaper of the Week interview. I wish there was a term for 'every three weeks', because that seems to be the case most of the time here lately.

I will do my best to get this thing rolling more regularly, but in the meantime, amuse yourselves with out latest 'Scaper of the Week, Supergeek! Turns out he's a super geek, a super geek, he's super geeky!!

Enjoy, and read on to find out who he picked for the next interview.

Supergeek
-Scaper of the Week # 46!

Who are you?
Scott Groat

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
My avatar has always been an image of Bill D. Cat from the Bloom County and Outland comic strips. He’s as crazy as I feel sometimes.

My username comes from back when I began playing and found .net. My friends being drunken idiots could never remember the name so they just called it “geek”. I owned all of the “geek” which made me the “superintendant” and I was having a very hard time coming up with a name since it was my first internet forum. It also happens to be my initials and Geek Super didn’t sound as good.

Age:
36

Occupation?
I’m a Design Technician in Right of Way. In other words, I use CADD to draw colored lines, shapes and text on road construction plans. I also get to read lots of deeds and legal descriptions. Yes boys and girls, it’s as exciting as it sounds.

Allegiance and why?
I guess it’s Utgar with Vydar a close second. Ever since my angst filled youth, I’ve been interested in dark demonic things.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?
It was either March or April of 2005; I had just sold my house and moved into a friend’s basement due to divorce. I saw a commercial on Cartoon Network and thought that it could be good for when I had my kids.

It turns out that my kids weren’t that interested but, a couple of my friends saw it set up and immediately were. Wave one came out shortly after and I was hooked.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
The terrain. It was the initial hook from the commercial then, Logrey came out with LandScape then, Zzzzz developed VirtualScape. It’s really helped push my OCD to a new level and I love it.

Thaelenk Tundra or Volcarren Wasteland?
Hot lava death

Favorite Hero and why?
Brunak. Potential multiple attacks, carry and lava resistant. He and Kaemon Awa are best friends at my house and they’ve both been in my best tournament finishing armies.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
I’m going to have to go with the Tagawa Samurai. Fantastic sculpts and when they get a little bloodlust going, look out!

Favorite Common Squad and why?
Minions of Utgar. Just look at them. They’re bada$$ in looks and play.

Favorite Special ability and why?
Deadly shot/strike. Two skulls for the price of one!

Least favorite unit and why?
Deathreavers! It annoys me to use them and it annoys me to play against them.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
I wouldn’t change a thing.

Tournament play or casual style?
I love both but, the only play that I get is tournament style so, I guess that’s it.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
I love everything about this place but, I probably wouldn’t still be around without the Events section. Being able to hook up with others from around the country that has the same passion for this game is priceless.

Okay, in a non-bonding circumstance, Arrow Gruts or Blade Gruts?
Blades all the way.

Favorite HeroScape moment:
How to pick just one? My top two are tournament experiences of course.

The first Tree town open. Showing up at Codman’s house and meeting; Jormi_Boced, Spider Poison and Momo the Monkey for the first time.

Number one is from the Beatrice Ne. tournament where I was playing Grok Riders x2, Marro Warriors, Isamu, Marcu, Ne-Gok-sa and Me-Burq-Sa. Needless to say, it was a rough outing but, on my last match, going against Knights of Weston, Airborne Elite, Finn and Nilfheim. I moved Ne-Gok-Sa adjacent to Nilfheim(with Finns spirit) and hucked the d20 into my tray…MINDSHACKLE!

Another board game you enjoy and why?
Don’t say Dominion, don’t say Dominion. Oh yeah, It’s a card game.

After checking my ratings at BGG, my next highest rated game under HeroScape is Crokinole. It’s a little like shuffleboard a little like curling and lots of fun. Great for gamers who like to bs and drink beer.

Favorite musical group or musician:
Again, how to pick just one?

I like lots of different music from jazz to metal but don’t buy much or listen to the radio so, probably The Black Crowes or The Rolling Stones, maybe Soundgarden.

Three true things and one lie aboutyourself:
  • I went to the same high school at the same time as Heroscapers member Joah.
  • My ex-in-laws still think that I was dishonorably discharged from the army (for drugs) thanks to my ex-brother in law.
  • I was the first to use the phrase kill ‘em all regarding HeroScape.
  • I bought airline tickets to Boston just to go to a tournament out there.
Other interests?
I’ve been enjoying teaching myself how to play the drum set, disc golfing, bird watching, container gardening and drinking beer with my pals.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
Truth, he’s the owner of the sandbox that I like to play in or at least watch other people playing in it. Really though, I’d be pleased as punch to play anyone from the site. Especially if you’re ever in my town. Except Elffy, no one wants to play with Elffy.

What was it like to beat Matthias Maccabeus?
One thing about Matthias is that, every time he loses (not often), there’s an excuse.
It was a fun match that I had the upper hand on right away because of the map and first initiative roll. He’s a great opponent who knows his HeroScape and is a great ambassador for the game/ community!

What message do you have for the community?
Life is short. No matter what you do with it, have as much fun as possible while doing it.

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
This was another tough choice since I’ve met so many great members but, I’m going to have to go with one of the two that probably has the most influence on me still being around. The TD of so many events that I haven’t even come close to winning but still enjoyed tremendously. Jormi_Boced.

Wow, I can't wait to see Elffy's response to your "Any Heroscapers member that you'd really like to play against?" section ^_^

Great review!

That's okay. We somehow always get cheated out of a game.

I'm pretty sure I remember you talking about that last one at a tourney sometime. I'm gonna say the lie is the "kill 'em all" coining.

Great interview, and don't worry about the 3 week span, rym. You can just start calling it Scaper of The Month, or SOTM...hmmm, just like the master set.

I'm guessing the lie is "Kill 'em all."

And rym, "Scaper of the Week" is no problem... it just means that the other two weeks didn't have a Scaper. They are lonely weeks. Poor weeks.

Think of it like Week at scapers (which coincidently Rym works on too along with me"). It's not really every week, it's just the slow boring weeks where we're not busy and Truth isn't giving us tasty tidbits to nom nom nom on.

Thanks for the congrats.
I had to give Elffy a hard time because he is supposed to come to Ames for college so, we should get to game often.
I've got to admit that this was a lot more difficult to fill out than I thought that it would. It's like a job application. I had to come back to it on about four different occasions.
I'll have to wait a few days to reveal the lie.

Thanks for stopping by Old Chaps.
I suppose that I can reveal the lie.
I believe that I was a Sophomore when Joah was a Senior.
I bought tickets to fly to Boston only to have flights cancelled due to bad weather so I had to get a refund.
I started two threads at .net one was titled "Sand" and the other was "Scenario or Kill 'em All?"
My ex-inlaws did believe that I was dishonorably discharged for drugs but I got that all cleared up long before my divorce.
