I Need Help with a Map!

Posted June 5th, 2010 at 12:45 PM by Kaemon Awasome
Okay,

So I'm posting this here so I won't clog up the boards, and just in case there is a thread for this kind of thing. That way, if a site supporter or more experienced Scaper happens across this, they may be able to move it appropriately or help me out.

I've got a map that I'm really excited about. It's a BoV style map (not suggesting that it's BoV quality, just designed with their standards and qualifications in mind). It uses 1 SotM, 1 BftU, and 1 TJ. It has power glyphs, and treasure glyphs (with a neat trap designed into the map). I really, really like this map, and would like to share it with my fellow Scapers.

-BUT!-

I've got a Mac. And I can't run Virtual Scape. And it sucks.

So I'm wondering if there is a Scaper out there who could help me Mod it. If so, what do I need to provide you? I know you'll need pictures, but how many? From what angles? Is there a process we can go through for me to communicate the map and build instructions, without using Virtual Scape? I would do whatever I could to get the map up. I will hand draw the build instructions and mail it to you. Just help a brother out if you can.

Thanks!

If it helps, you could find some Hex-Grid paper (I think AliasQTip made some a while back). Then you could draw the first level and write what hexes are where, and then do the second level and so on.

Then you give this to someone and they make it on VS and upload it.

If you can draw it up on some Hex-Grid Paper, scan it, take a few pictures of a complete map, and email it all to me along with any other things (special instructions, write ups etc.) you'd like to include, I'll package it for you. Just PM me and I'll give you the address to send it to.

Thanks guys!

Unfortunately, I also do not have scanning capabilities, but this Hex-Grid Paper is really cool. I downloaded it and I will at least be able to save my creation with it.

Someone else has also offered to help (such a great community!), and if that doesn't work out, then I will get back with you Alias, hoping that I can find a scanner among my circle of friends.

Thanks again!

What about using LandScape to create at least a framework for your VS enabled friend to work with? No scanner required. I know LandScape is terribly outdated but it is my understanding that it works on Macs. You could build your map using standard tiles. Then, send the LandScape file, photos, and notes to whoever is building the map for you in VS.

EDIT: Oops. I think that link is dead. I'll try to find another.

ANOTHER EDIT: Yep, it's dead. LandSCAPE is dead. How about making photocopies and sending them using a good ol' fashioned postal service? That's the last of my ideas.

Hah! You're cracking me up Alias!

But seriously, I will use the good ol' fashioned postal service if it comes to that. This guy thinks that four pictures at a 45 degree angle will get us started in the right direction and we'll go from there. But if it doesn't work out, then I'm going to draw this puppy, put it in a box, and ship it to your house with some toys.

I appreciate your help. And I really like your Hex-Grid Paper.

Just let me know if I can help.

I created the Hex-Grid Paper out of necessity. My dining room table serves double as the gaming table. However, my computer is in the living room. When I free-build maps in the dining room I sketch them out on the grid paper. It's very time consuming but saves me from running back and forth across the house. If anyone has a spare laptop they don't need, feel free to PM me. Anybody?

All right, what about this. Take the hex grid paper into Microsoft paint and just use the paint bucket tool to fill in each individual hex, and then erase the lines and stuff to make like 2 hex pieces and such. And you can use the text tool to distinguish between jungle brush and jungle trees for example.

Once you have filled it in and erased the lines and such save it as a picture, then do it again for every level. Then once you are done just email it all to whoever is assembling it. I could do it if you want, my computer will render in high quality.

Also a good idea Warlord. I will probably try this next week when I have a little more time. At least to see if it works, for future reference.

You can run Virtualscape in Wine, a free Windows emulator. There may be some trouble with the 3d view but everything else should work OK.

LANDscape is not dead. Mooseman uploaded a Mac version of it here when I PMed him about it.

And didn't I PM you and tell you about Wine to run VirtualScape? (I got the idea from quozl so he can have all the credit for that.)
