Louisville Pre-GenCon Tournament 7/17

Last weekend the OVAH guys had a tournament to practice for the upcoming GenCon main event. 510 points, 24 spaces.

I played

225 10th Regiment x3
185 Nilfhiem
100 Marcus Decimus Gallus

Game 1 vs Aldin:
120 Morgimm Forgehammer
110 Airborne Elite
100 Marcus DG
100 Roman Legionnaires x2
080 Omnicron Repulsors x2

The map was Midnight Lagoon, I believe (all the maps were GenCon maps). His Ariborne didn't Drop in round 1, and I didn't want Nilfhiem on the low ground when they did, so after I moved some 10th forward, up came Nilfhiem. I did alright, killing a squad of Romans and putting 4 wounds on his MDG. Then all my luck ran out. Before it was all over, I only killed 3 more Romans and 2 Airborne, meaning I only scored 50 points (full card scoring). Nilfhiem couldn't roll more than 1 skull for Ice Shards, and when he did, the engaged Airborne rolled 2 shields... Aldin was kind enough to tell me that I was a better player than that and my army was better than that, so I didn't feel so bad going into game 2.

Record: 0-1

Game 2 vs jschild:
210 Aubrien Archers x3
120 Venoc Vipers x3
120 Venoc Warlord
050 Marro Warriors
010 Isamu (is that right?)

Map was Just Passing Through. I started off pretty good again, getting my 10th on height and doing some damage, but then jschild rolled 3 20s in a row for Frenzy and took out all but 2 of my 10th! Nilfhiem came through for me, though, and it came down to him with 3 wounds against Mittens. Nilf took a breakaway hit to get the Glyph of Kelda. This also left him on low ground, but he was able to climb up and win the game.

Record: 1-1

Game 3 vs jschild's son:
220 Protectors of Ullar x2
120 Raelin 2.0
090 Atlaga
080 Concan

Map was Elswin Plateau. I started by moving Nilfhiem to height, not wanting Combined Arbalest to start putting damage on him. Having only a Range of 5, his units were forced to come into Nilfhiem's Ice Shard range. Nilf was able to destroy Concan and a squad of Protectors, taking 4 wounds. 10th went in next, fighting Protectors for Initiative Defense Glyphs, and wiping out everything else.

Record: 2-1

Game 4 vs Clarissmus (sp?):
300 Marro Drones x6
110 Brunak
100 Syvarris

I forgot the name of this map, the one with the wound glyph in the middle and (barf) elevated starting zones. Brunak and Syvarris took the middle of the map and Wannok while my 10th tried to move forward. Brunak's Blood Hungry took out 3 10th at once, but he wandered too close to the starting zone, where some 10th still next to Marcus were able to put 2 wounds on him. Nilf came over to put an end to his rampage and rolled 1 skull...but Brunak whiffed defense. That cost my opponent a turn, then Syvarris fell costing him another turn. Still, he had 18 Drones to work with... Between Nilf grabbing the wound glyph and my 10th, I was able to barely hold on. Nilf just barely lived, 1 Life, to deliver the last kill via the glyph.

Record: 3-1

Game 5 vs SuperflyTNT:
180 Marro Stingers x3
120 Deathreavers x3
120 Torin
080 Raelin 1.0
010 Isamu

This was not an army I was looking forward to facing. But, we were on Fissure, and apparently Nilfhiem felt the need to defend his home turf. My dragon led, my plan to ice the rats, then overrun him with 10th. But, long story short, Nilfhiem rolled 3 skulls on every single shard and single-handedly won the game. (Technically, Super threw in the towel once he was down to only 5 Rats, but none of my other units took a turn.) This was helped slightly by TNT missing 3 Stinger Drains, but my dice were hot.

Record: 4-1, second place of 14.

My tourney record improves to 28-16 (63.6%) and I had a blast!

Nice battle reports, and nice wins against some tough competition! Quick question: Who did jschild frenzy with - Aubriens or Vipers...Or Both?

Thanks guys.

Vipers Frenzied all 3 times (same OM).

I'm not actually going to GenCon this year, but I hope it helped those who are!

Great report. Thanks a lot. My biggest question though is how did SuperflyTNT's Torin do? Was he backing his stingers' defense up with him or what? Was the Realin/Torin combo working? I wasn't there but I'd have to say 3 failed stinger drains would lose the game to just about anyone :\

Nice report.

You certainly convinced superflyTNT that Fissure is a bad map for reavers and stingers.

It is nice to get the real story. You rolled like a mad man and he failed stinger drain 3 times. I don't think the map matters too much under those circumstances.

The truth is he messed with the bull and got the horns.

Thanks for the report!

Thanks guys.

He didn't get to utilize the Torin/Raelin combo against me, because Ice Shard Breath is a Special Attack. I don't know how it did for him in other games.

3 failed Drains is not good for any game, but I was really surprised he tried for it so often since 3 failed rolls in his previous game (against my brother) hurt him a lot there, too. Maybe he was just hoping his luck had turned around?
