Jandar in a corner

Posted August 15th, 2014 at 01:52 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
We’ve been playing on a new map- it’s a big map, like we usually have but this one is bisected by a river six hexes wide. It’s bridged in the center with road tiles. Our current usual scenario is a kind of capture the flag with six flags- but once you have it captured you can move on.

Last night I faced my two older sons. I took Jandar. I knew my eldest son was taking the latest incarnation of his Skaven (ratmen) forces, so I made sure I took a mage who could hit with an area of effect attack. Since the skaven usually have low defence a good seven hex fire storm wipes quite a few off the map.

The skaven have an advantage which is also a deadly weakness. They are allowed to have two figures per hex- meaning they move better and when they are adjacent there’s twice as many attacks. But it’s also a terrible weakness against figures, like mages, who can target a hex or hexes rather than an individual figure.

I wasn’t feeling hopeful. ...

Rats versus Lizards

Posted August 8th, 2014 at 02:13 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I have always loved the ratmen. They came from the warhammer universe, and like good rodents burrowed their way into our custom Scape universe.

My eldest son loves them. His insidious custom creations have frustrated the rest of us for years. Last night was no exception.

The rats have a theme- though they lack ranged weapons their move of 6 helps them to cover ground quickly. By special rule two rats are allowed on each hex instead of just one figure. It means a lot of them get close to you really fast. The Bergen Pack has low attack and defence because they are cannon fodder. If you don’t attack and engage, they’ll get at you first. They’ll tie you up and hack at you, keeping engaged figures useless. They only way to get past them is to kill them. They are usually backed up by tougher troops- the experienced and well armed storm vermin, the long lanced Poker Pack or the tricky Sun Pack who have a little more defence. They have heroes and mages...

Upgrade Complete

Posted August 8th, 2014 at 04:23 AM by truth

The upgrade is complete--mostly. There are still some things I have yet to configure and there are no doubt a bunch of weird issues waiting to be discovered. But everything should basically be in working order.

Please report any new issues you find in the Aug-2014 HSers Upgrade thread. You can also use that thread for reporting general feedback and suggestions.

Heroscapers Upgrade Thursday Night

Posted August 5th, 2014 at 03:55 PM by truth

Heroscapers will be down Thursday night/Friday morning while we perform an upgrade to our forum software. When we return, the site will look slightly different, but overall should be the same place you know and love, just with new features.

The highlights include:

Better PM system- allows sorting, filtering, quick-replying, and searching of your PMs. Also has a nice PM reply history feature.

@mentions - if you prefix someone you mention in one of your posts with an @ symbol (e.g., @truth, @Aldin, etc.), your post will inlcude a link to that person's profile page. That person can also see in their UserCP that you've mentioned them and can click on a link to go directly to your post.

Revamped user profile page - includes new customization options, friend lists, public messages, and a boatload of information.

Post attachments - Except in the...

Looking Back on Ten Years of Heroscape

Posted August 3rd, 2014 at 11:14 AM by Grungebob
It's Been 10 Years Heroscape

Hello everyone! My name is Jerry Hawthorne. I'm known around here as Grungebob. I have been scarce these days, but I come by daily just to lurk around and observe the community in action. The torch bearers, keepers of the flame, the creative geniuses who make Heroscape customs, build insane maps, post battle reports and foster community. I love what I see.

I wanted to take some time out of my schedule in observance of the decade of awesome gaming Heroscape has provided. That's right, ten great years. It is a credit to the game and this community. Ten years is a milestone in the board game industry. Most games have receded into distant memory after just a couple of years. Heroscape is what I call an heirloom game. The kind of game you just never get rid of because you never really get tired of playing it and even if you get pulled away on some other hobby, you know you will be back.

Heck, I want to play Heroscape...
