Nadi's Return To HeroScape

Posted May 24th, 2010 at 03:36 PM by Nadi
So, I've been working to restore the SHS map archive that I used to have at: http://heroscape.catalystradio.com. There are at least 160+ maps that were hosted there, in addition to a good little collection of maps that I had never released since the site went down awhile back. I've managed to get about 118 of those uploaded in the last week (maybe two weeks? I haven't really been paying attention) and I'm about to go cross-eyed from uploading these maps. LOL.

I never realized (until last week) how OLD some of these maps are. I have maps that have build / release dates of them from January 2007. HAS IT BEEN THAT LONG!??!?! Seriously, have I been playing HeroScape for this long of time? I know there are plenty of members on here that have probably been playing since HeroScape came out on day one, but for me to stick with a game (outside of Final Fantasy games) for more than a year is just... wow. I feels like YESTERDAY that I bought my first Master Set, came home, and gave it a 'trial run' with a friend. I know a lot of the build dates for our maps aren't really accurate, because the date stamps on them should be a lot EARLIER than what they read. But still... even at the 'latest' release date... I'm looking at maps that are almost 3 1/2 years old.

Ever since the SHS site went down, I had kind of let HeroScape wander around. I didn't pay a lot of attention to it and honestly, didn't have much of a desire to play it. Half the fun of playing it was coming up with new maps (and sometimes scenarios to go with those maps). But, when my outlet that was the main drive to make (and share) maps wasn't available anymore, I found myself at a serious set back: HeroScape sat on the shelf. Top that off with the fact that many of 'kids' that I used to play HeroScape with (during my youth pastoring years) were now gone... there was really no reason to play anymore. And to make matters even more difficult, I had to remove our sets from where they were originally held (in a large room, where we left maps setup on a ping-pong table for weeks at a time) and ended up storing them at my house, which did NOT provide me a lot of room.

For a good while my sets sat on the shelf and collected dust. I would try to find ways to motivate myself to play some HeroScape, but I couldn't do it. I couldn't setup a good portion of the maps I really wanted to play, mainly because I was so limited with size. If a map DID manage to fit on my living room table, then it was a matter of finding someone to get over there (who understood the game) and those were few and far between. There were times that a HeroScape map would set on my table (setup and ready to go) and yet, there was nobody to play it with (or no time) and I knew I had left it up too long with my Tillica Jungle pieces started to get dusty. It would seem that HeroScape was on the way out.

Thankfully, with the release of the D&D master set, new life has been breathed into HeroScape for not only myself, but others as well. A very small group of those that used to play (mostly the older teens / adults from 'back in the day' ) have started to play again and I've been able to introduce HeroScape to some new people, including family and friends. It wasn't long after since the release of the new D&D set (which we have 3 of now... never stop collecting!) that I have found myself now playing HeroScape 2 or 3 times a week. That eagerness and anticipation that I hadn't felt for a long time has returned and I think I have been able to infect those around me with the same desire to play HeroScape. I've had more fun in the past few weeks of playing HeroScape, than I have in the past year.

I've missed it.

I'm glad it is back.

So, it inspired me to rebuild and redo my map collection (along with some nudging from some great people on here), as well as create NEW maps with the D&D terrain. (LOVE the D&D terrain!!!!! Works out great with the old stuff!) So, I hope this is the start of another long 'love affair' with HeroScape. I hope I'm able to share the old, along with the new, and at the same time let others experience the fun I've managed to have over the past few years playing this awesome little hex-based terrain building mini-figure game.

I enjoy looking at your map thread just so it can bring back memories of when I used to visit your site daily. These maps somehow managed to stay in the back of my head, so I could remember them a couple years later.

Thanks.

Nice to see you back.

Does this mean the SHS site will be back up?

No, sadly I don't have a place to host the SHS site and to rebuilt it at this point would probably take more time than uploading the 160+ maps that I've been doing for the past several days. But, the good news is that most all of those will be available on HERE for download, so they will be usable and not 'lost'.

I'm also going to try to come up with a way to use the Codex in a manner where you can easily find the maps you are looking for by the type of terrain that you wish to use. But, that will come after I get the maps updated and on here.

Maybe you could try a google docs spreadsheet? I know that you can sort those by column.

Actually, if you check the link in my thread (or my sig) for the Codex, you'll find that I'm already using Google Docs for just that. (And it works good.) But I'd like to find an option to where users can sort the data on their own, instead of pre-defined sort by me. (Unless Google Docs does this already and I'm just unaware.)

Good to see that your maps are available again. They were always some of the best around.
