Skyknight's Dungeon Crawl

Posted October 27th, 2010 at 09:55 AM by truth
Longtime Heroscaper Skyknight has started a long running campaign of Heroscape battles with his kids and he is keeping us up to date in Dungeon Crawl thread: http://www.heroscapers.com/community...ad.php?t=32840

Here is a sample:

I am going to set them a complete dungeon crawl to be advanced throughout the winter. I will post pics here and the scenarios but it is not going to be Classic Heroscape per se....it is going to be a dungeon crawl first without much regards for Generals other than special powers being activated. It will not be Vahalla....the heroes will become generic and as swarms of heroes invade the dungeons of StormDeep I will constantly tell the story, introduce new heroes, new traps, new rule twists, and all sorts of other fun stuff. We will carry treasure forward and use Heroscape rules but the landscape and the story is mine. Hope to dust off the graveyard next week and then assault the front doors of the ruins the following week...from there we will go ever deeper into the depths until I decide to end it.....think this should be a blast

Chapter 1......

Sudema's Playground!!!

As the Knights of the Sacred Flame follow the burial road South, Denrick talks to the Cleric Ana. "Ana...I would ask for caution on your part when dealing with Maccabeus Hawthorne. Though he is the King's cousin there are those that say he is linked to the troubles we are about to face. I tried to dissuade his majesty from this course, but King Petronius believes the only way to truly claar his beloved cousin is by allowing him the chance to help overthrow this new evil....be wary for I do not know his intentions"

With a nod in Denricks direction Ana moves back alongside Rhogar Dragonspine, a Dragonborn Paladin of incredible conviction and power. The column of the Flame's most trusted knights and cavalry winds its way through the forests and pines. Suddenly from ahead comes the thunderous sound of hoofs as they move torwards the host of knights. Captain Dupuis drives his horse forward...as he comes to a halt before Denrick he pauses to catch his breath....sweat dripping from both his forehead and his mounts flanks. "Denrick....the enemy is ahead....they control the graveyard not a half mile down the road from this very spot". Denrick replies...."then let us not tarry good Captain...we have a date with the undead!!"

The column rushes forward until it comes to a wide creek with a bridge spanning the waters. The knights line up on the far side of the stream able now to see what lays in wait for them. There, standing upon an elevated graveyard stands a female wrapped in bandages...her life has crept from her long ago. She stands behind a black and twisted tree flanked by statues of hideous gargoyles. She extends her arm towards the Knights and flicks a skeletal finger in their direction....a dry hiss escapes her rotted lips...the challenge has been issued. From behind her the graves stir as hungry zombies rise to their feet in anticipation of a fresh meal. Behind the graveyard lies stairs descending into a chamber deep in the earth.....this must be the entrance to the underdark. From out of the entrance pour eight hounds of bone and dripping flesh. Disease and rot surround their bodies and a horrible cry escapes their jaws as they attempt to howl in expectation of the slaughter.

Many of the knights seem visibly shaken at the Mummies appearance and the mass of undead....many that is except for Denrick. He stands with shoulders square glaring at the abonimation that was once a proud elf queen. His lips are parted into a snarl and his eyes blaze with a hatred and loathing. It is difficult to know who is saner at the moment between the two opposing leaders. Denrick cries aloud..."FORWARD GILBERT...LIFT THE FLAG OF THE SACRED FLAME HIGH ABOVE SO THAT THESE CURSED WRETCHES MAY KNOW WHOM IT WAS THAT LAID THEM TO ETERNAL REST!!!!" With that Rhogar releases a blast of fire from his lungs into the air and the host begins to cross the bridge moving straight towards the undead horde!
This is the first battle for Denrick...the armies as they stand.

Heroes of the Sacred Flame

Sir Denrick (General Denrick)
Ana Karathon
Sir Dupuis (Captain Dupuis)
Rhogar Dragonspine
Sir Hawthorne (Kings Cousin) (boo hissss)
and brave Sir Gilbert

The Knights of the Scared Flame include...
six squads of knights of Weston
five squads of Templar Knights

The enemy Hero

SUDEMA

And her Undead Horde...

six squads of zombies
two squads of hounds.

I will be playing the undead horde in hopes of thinning the nasty living creatures of their numbers.

The Cavalry will be controlled by my daughter along with Rhogar Dragonspine, Sir Dupuis, and Hawthorne. The rest of the army will be played by my son.....game to commence Wednesday night....I will fill you in then

@ Skyknight - "jousting around corners" ...lol... go^od one! And Kudos for sharing this most excellent scenario, map construction, customized terrain designs, and HS Army build. It's really awesome, thanks. I have the stuff and similar ideas, but now I need the time to pull it all together like this... and the kids to play with, haha, mine are all grown up.

@ Everyone - just food for thought and further discussion: I've been trying to get my neice interested in HeroScape because she Home Schools her two kids (8 & 12). HS obviously reinforces basic math skills with calculating the statistical probabilities of Skulls vs. Shields, etc., BUT I also believe that Campaign Scenarios like this one described above can be used as the catalyst with creative writing assignments, as each battle is chronicled to further develop a story line chapter by chapter. Has any one tried this in their own home? Does anyone think it's a dumb idea, because gaming should be strictly for FUN?

I can just picture the arena now... On one side, the valiant white knight. On the other side, the tyrannical black knight. Smack dab in the middle, an L-shaped wall...

Really cool stuff, Skyknight. Looks like a pretty epic battle.

@Johngee Haha, no, if you can figure out how to use something like a toy to teach, that is a great idea. Personally, I think the CoN is a good thing to play to learn stuff, like creativity and politics. But to make a story and learn to think (strategize) and figure out statistics and what works well together, that's a good idea.

Neat! I've been doing something similar with my wife and eldest child. We've almost got our campaign wrapped up, but I didn't think to take pictures. I'm planning another one, though, so maybe I'll take some then.

Great stuff, which shows what can be done with Scape! Are you changing any rules (such as allowing Sudema to bond with the Zombies) for the sake of the story, or just keeping on with Official rules?
