Amazing Army Auction

Greetings!

This Saturday, I'm hosting a tournament called the Amazing Army Auction. A quick synopsis:

There are going to be around 50 premade, 400ish Point armies on a table at the beginning of the event, and players will be given Monopoly money ($200) to buy 2 of them in an auction.

When an army is purchased, the money used to purchase it gets distributed to the armies still remaining, however the buyer chooses. Players that buy those armies with money on them later get to keep that money as well.

Lastly, each player can bring 3 Mercenary units (one 50 Pointer, one 100 Pointer, and one 150 Pointer) that they can hire to their armies by paying their point cost with their left over money. If they go over 24 hexes this way, they have to sit figures.

Each player will use one army for Rounds 1 & 2, and another army for Rounds 3-5. A second auction will be held after Round 2.

My question to the masses is: which Mercenaries would you bring, and which armies would you be targetting to buy? Here are the armies in the pool (money is used to adjust the point totals to 400):

Armies:
Spoiler Alert!

The Mercs I'm thinking about bringing are:

50 - Marro Warriors
100 - Syvarris
150 - Major Q10

I picked Syvarris over the Krav because I wanted a one-hex hero in case I buy one of the armies that are already 24 hexes (Marro Swarm and Trons), but I might end up going with the Krav anyway.

I'm not sure whether I want to try and spend the money on a good army early, or wait and get a mediocre army for less money, and then hire a better Mercenary. I have a gut feeling that I'm going to end up with the Viper army as one of my choices - hopefully I can get them cheap.

What would you try to do?

I'd go for the Elf Wizards first, obviously. Do the characters HAVE to be the 50, 100, and 150, or can you go less (ie take a 45 for your 50 pointer)?

I have four favorites: Death from above, one and done, reptiles on acid, and fire and ice. I would choose the lizard king army but if Charos by some miracle (or disaster) gets beaten Lizard King is in trouble

There are a couple army cores there that really look like they could stand out.

Sentinals look strong (escpeically considering that you don't need to consider Raelin for your 100 pt. merc.)

Both of the Greenscales armies are very draftable.

I'd definately take the wolves if I could get them at the good price.

I'd probably bring Marro Warriors, and Q10 at 50 and 150, 100 I'm unsure of at the moment, though the Krav would be my forerunner. I'd hope to get Sentinals at a reasonable price, splitting the money between wolves and some of the weak armies, then hope to pick up the wolves at a cheap price.

I love your Auction idea, as we've talked about in other threads. Its a stressful concept at the same time.

I like Marro Stomping Grounds, which can benefit from any of your mercs as well.

Elffy, you MUST use Mercs that are exactly 50, 100, and 150 Points. I wanted some way to put a limit on which figures you could hire. I thought about just excluding Vydar altogether from the army pool and using Vydar figures as Mercs, but decided against it because I thought we'd get a lot of players and wanted to have all figures available.

I considered X17 as my 100 Point Merc, only because he's one hex and I expect a lot of the younger players to bring Cyprien as their 150 Point Merc. I also considered Sir Denrick - he's one-hex, a nice beatstick with solid attack, and has synergy if I can get my hands on the Knight, Macdirk or 4th Mass army.

Also, we got a couple more players, so I had to add 2 more armies to the pool. They are:

Einar's Royal Guard
Empress Kiova - 90
Einar Imperium x2 - 370
Earth Elemental - 405
($5) - 400, 8 hexes

and

Bak From the Future
Tul-Bak-Ra - 130
Marro Dividers x3 - 280
Krav Maga Agents - 380
$20 - 400

The Trons and Mass armies look strong to me, but they balance out nicely since the Tron army is already 24 hexes and Raelin can't be a Merc, and it's tough to add a Merc to the Mass army and keep the Valiant bonus. I love the decisions that players are going to have to make Saturday!

KC:

Just want to say that you've done a wonderful job making up armies with a full collection of Scape, including some of the new stuff. I've gotten some news ideas about combining the old with the new, and I laughed myself silly over your great army names! Good luck with the tournament.

Thanks, chas!

Over the last few days, we've got even more players for the tournament, bringing the total up to 27! That means we needed even more armies, and I had to do some shuffling of units to come up with 56 available armies in the auction. In case anyone is still curious, here's the new list. The only unit that gets re-used is the Venoc Warlord, because lets face it - he has a generic name anyway and he's super-awesome:

Spoiler Alert!

Some of the armies were adjusted a bit to make them a bit more competitive, and some were adjusted to free up figures for the additional armies. If we need anymore, I'm probably going to have to break into the Marvel figures. I don't think I'd like to run into Silver Surfer + Thorgrim at this tournament, or Captain America + Drake RotV + Saylind, but those are armies on the back burner if more people show up.

I can't wait for Saturday!

Just to bring this blog to its fruition, here's a link to the results of the tourney.

One of the coolest things about this tournament was that I could win it with Frenzy armies, which would normally get torn up at a tournament. The variety of armies in this event was just awesome.

Way cool Idea, KC! I would have chosen the exact same army and mercs. The other option that I would try would be the Greek Disciplined with Marcus for 100 merc, and a suicide of Tarns for grabbing glyphes and Mimring for killing.
