C3G Interview
Dr. Jekyll
Author: Tornado

Welcome one and all to another C3G interview. This time we have a fresh face with new perspective on the world of C3G. It was an absolute pleasure and privelege to discuss our shared hobby with the one and only Dr. Jekyll.

How did you get into Heroscape?

I originally got into Heroscape years ago, when it first came out. Most of my collection is from purchases made at Walmart, the good old days. I loved the idea of different dimensions/universes coming together and battling it out on a map that a friend or I constructed with our brain matter.

What got you into C3G?

Two years ago I talked a friend into playing a game of classic Heroscape. We played a few hours and had a really good match. We included a couple of Hasbro superheroes for fun. At the end of the match, my buddy said he really wished that Heroscape had a Batman or a Thor figure to play with. I totally agreed, and went to digging. I found the Heroscapers website (why it took so long I don’t know) and discovered C3G. It was love at first sight. The amount of work and dedication that was poured into the project was fascinating. I had to get involved. I started playtesting, won a nomination for a design, and couldn’t stop thinking “What’s next?” So here we are.

Very cool. What are some of your favorite C3G designs?

Oooh, that’s a tough one. With so many choices, it’s hard to decide. I am huge X-Men fan, so number 1 would have to be Wolverine. He’s the best there is at what he does. Coming in 2nd place has got to be Captain America: love playing with this guy. Great leader for a variety of builds. At the moment, 3rd place goes to Grim Reaper. I really love the way he turned out. Better than I could have imagined really. There are so many other designs that I really dig though, too. One coming out soon that may change the VDO (Vehicle Destructible Object) game has got me pretty excited.

What was the process of designing Grim Reaper like?

In the beginning he was going in a completely different direction. I was intrigued by an idea that would turn figures into terrorists with his Lethal Legion power. I was attempting to bring his Avengers cartoon character and his comic book character together. It didn’t work out, so I switched it up and went straight comic book style. He finally ended up being a manipulative mastermind that can turn his brother (Wonder Man) and savage figures into criminals. Leading Grim Reaper was probably the easiest design I have done so far. Not sure if I am just getting better at the whole design process or what. The amount of help given by this great group of people was the best part. I genuinely enjoyed the feedback and seeing other peoples perspectives.

Now that you have done it a few times, is there anything you would change about the process? Do you have any advice for future public designers?

I think the process is right where it needs to be. I love it; you can tell that there was a lot of thought put into the design process. Advice for future public designers: the Breathing Period will be the longest and sometimes the most frustrating part of your design. This is the time for you to receive that good feedback. The feedback you receive may not always be what you want to hear. Understand that it is not meant to discourage you, but to strengthen the design either thematically or strategically. Take that feedback and use it as a tool to make something great!!

I really appreciate your enthusiasm and positivity. You were recently promoted to Sidekick. What do you think of the Outer Sanctum?

I am super excited about my promotion to Sidekick! Honestly seeing the Outer Sanctum made me realize how much work goes into the project under the surface. “Overwhelmed” would be an understatement. The project is sooo active and making progress every day. I have a newfound respect and gratitude to all the Heroes, Legends, and Sidekicks [and Allies! ~Tornado] putting in all the work they do. It’s definitely a passion project, and it shows. I can’t wait to help out.

What are you interested in pursuing? Are there any characters or factions you want to design?

I hope to one day help out in the Art Department. My wife is a photographer, so I already pay for Photoshop. Might as well make use of it in more ways than one. Right now I want to get the ball rolling on Image comics Wild C.A.T.S. I already have some rough drafts for the designs written up. Grifter and Zealot would be a cool addition to C3G. I was surprised to find out that they had figures, so no mod or repaint needed. It’s going to be awesome!

I was impressed by the art you did for a map for the Terrain Dept. Do you have any interest in working on more terrain or buildings?

Well, thank you!! Actually, yes I do. Ever since I got a 3D printer, I have been printing more custom terrain, and would love to see some of what I have officially added to C3G. I have some bushes and trees that I think would be a great addition. I even printed a building that would fit in perfectly. I’m always excited to see new terrain added.

OK, now you got me excited. What more can you tell me about this 3D printed building?

Sure! It’s actually a newsstand from the Crisis Protocol game. It’s about 7 hexes high. The door is right at head height for your average 5 height medium figures. 3 hexes in a row fit perfectly on the top. There is a door on the front and side, so you could potentially see something like that which was used for the bases on the bungalows. It’s something I would like to pursue for sure, anything to bring a more city/neighborhood feel to the game would be great.

I totally agree. Do you have any other ideas to expand the urban setting in C3G?

Well, I have been contemplating a gas station that would have a glyph associated with it to give a little one-time boost to vehicles. Maybe a dumpster you could go dumpster diving in. Nothing solid right now, just some thoughts.

Oh, I like both of those ideas. I am looking forward to expanding VDOs. Is there anything in C3G that you would like to see more of in the future?

You know, I would love to see some new maps for playtesting. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of maps to choose from. But with unlimited possibilities, there should be more. Maybe I’ll try my hand at that too. Other than that, I can’t think of anything else. C3G seems to be expanding out and including things that I would have originally thought not possible, it’s a great thing, and I’ll be here for the ride.

Oh man, maps and VDOs??? Not where I expected this to go, but love it!

Happy to have you aboard, Dr. J.! Hoping with all the new public members we can see a lot more interviews like this! Great read, T-Spinny! Thanks for doing this.
