I was a bit of a strange kid. Not surprising really because I’m a bit of a strange adult. But I digress....
Once when I was 11 or so years old I decided I wanted to see what it would be like if I had no arms. I’d seen pictures of the armless- the thalidomide babies were getting publicity and I was interested. (for those of you too young to know thalidomide it was a drug given to expectant mothers to help with morning sickness, however the drug resulted in birth defects, usually deformities and shortness in the legs and no arms).
I don’t know if my parents noticed that I’d stopped using my arms. They were a different generation and not very connected to us kids. I like to think I’m connected to my kids but is it true? I only see what they chose to show me.
Anyway, there I was, an armless kid with arms practicing writing and drawing with my feet, dressing, - of course I couldn’t eat with my feet in front of my parents. They would have...
