Rats versus Lizards

Posted August 8th, 2014 at 02:13 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I have always loved the ratmen. They came from the warhammer universe, and like good rodents burrowed their way into our custom Scape universe.

My eldest son loves them. His insidious custom creations have frustrated the rest of us for years. Last night was no exception.

The rats have a theme- though they lack ranged weapons their move of 6 helps them to cover ground quickly. By special rule two rats are allowed on each hex instead of just one figure. It means a lot of them get close to you really fast. The Bergen Pack has low attack and defence because they are cannon fodder. If you don’t attack and engage, they’ll get at you first. They’ll tie you up and hack at you, keeping engaged figures useless. They only way to get past them is to kill them. They are usually backed up by tougher troops- the experienced and well armed storm vermin, the long lanced Poker Pack or the tricky Sun Pack who have a little more defence. They have heroes and mages...

Knights of the Future

Posted July 31st, 2014 at 01:05 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
The pages - young knights in training- were out in full force for the recent summer medieval camp. But something has changed somehow- they all seem to be younger and smaller than ever before. I guess mostly they are seven to ten years old and they always were. It’s just that now my own children are older and I guessed I judged using them as a yardstick. When they were small, it seemed normal, now that they’re bigger, little kids seem especially tiny.

Perhaps I have run this program too many times now. The thrills and terrors are no longer exciting, just another activity. I try hard to remember that the pages are experiencing things for the first time. They still get frightened and scared, I just don’t notice as much.

We had a large group of squirters (little boys) this time. The best of them was called Demon blade. They get to pick new names when they come in and for a week they live the fantasy of being someone else. It’s always very freeing and I am constantly...

Scape Hunt: 80 Yard Sale Search

Posted June 18th, 2014 at 11:34 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
It has been a while since my family and I had a good Scape hunt. Is there any left out there?

I always mean to stop at yard sales and things when I pass but I just don’t. I’ve seen too many pink clothes and ceramic hippos. I used to keep an eye online but that has dried up too. Now there are only ads of people looking for more Scape. (Are you listening Hasbro WotC? No, you’re not there.....)

Cottam is a sleepy little village in Southern Ontario. I don’t know how many people live there. It’s one of those places that’s so small it doesn’t have a sign telling you the population. There’s two tiny old churches, two tiny cemeteries, a place that sells hot corn on the cob in the summer and a corner store. It has been invaded by subdivisions filled with people who work in the city half an hour away. There are three subdivisions in total at the edges of the old brick houses village.

There is no reason to go to Cottam unless you’re...

all shook up

Posted June 2nd, 2014 at 01:12 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I recently had an appointment with a new doctor, a nice lady but there was one thing that bothered me. She shook my hand at the end of our first visit- or I should say rather that I shook hers. She held out her hand and it was limp and clammy, like a wet rag. I had been trying hard to have a favourable impression of her but that wet rag was really hard to take.

Why did she do it? I’m sure it was her personal habit, not a soppy sack just for me. It seemed far too opposite of what a doctor should be. A good handshake is an exchange- a promise. I have met you and I will do my best to keep up my end of our agreement- in this case doctor and patient. The limp wet rag hand says.... I can’t be bothered to do more? And she was the one who offered it! It hadn’t even occured to me.

She wasn’t really my first choice and likely she knew that. My previous doctor, a man I liked very much, died suddenly. He was forty-four. He listened a great deal and...

Circuit completed

Posted May 22nd, 2014 at 12:11 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I was a bit of a strange kid. Not surprising really because I’m a bit of a strange adult. But I digress....

Once when I was 11 or so years old I decided I wanted to see what it would be like if I had no arms. I’d seen pictures of the armless- the thalidomide babies were getting publicity and I was interested. (for those of you too young to know thalidomide it was a drug given to expectant mothers to help with morning sickness, however the drug resulted in birth defects, usually deformities and shortness in the legs and no arms).

I don’t know if my parents noticed that I’d stopped using my arms. They were a different generation and not very connected to us kids. I like to think I’m connected to my kids but is it true? I only see what they chose to show me.

Anyway, there I was, an armless kid with arms practicing writing and drawing with my feet, dressing, - of course I couldn’t eat with my feet in front of my parents. They would have...
