Scaper of the Week Interview # 66

This week is the second-most well-known spidy on Heroscapers. (With spider_poison holding the 1st Place Flag.)

An electrician first, he's now going to be a teacher! Let's hope he's nice to the kids and teaches them Heroscape. Anyway, here is this week's Scaper:

-Scaper of the Week #66 -

spidysox

Who are you?
Jason Burt

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
My username is a combination of 2 of my favorite things, Spiderman and the Boston Red Sox. As for my avatar, it has been a succession of different Spiderman images. Currently it is an image from the Spiderman 3 movie of a half black, half red Spidy costume.

Age:
37

Occupation?
I've been a commercial/industrial electrician for the last 13 years but I have recently finished my college education to become a teacher. I am still working as an electrician while looking for full time work as a teacher.

Allegiance and why?
Utgar. A lot of my favorite units are there. Cyprien, Minions, Zombies, Fen Hydra.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?
Back in early 2007 I was at Peteparkerh's house for a bible study with my family. While I was in the living room talking with some people my then 7 year old daughter (who was a major dinosaur nut at the time) comes running into the room saying "daddy, Mr. Thompson has a game where there is an Orc riding a dinosaur! Come see." Needless to say I went to check it out immediately. Pete had a map set up on his table. After running through a bit of the rules and the dynamics of the game with us, we were hooked. We had our own copy 2 days later.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
The endless re-play ability. I've played scape 100's of times and can't wait to play more. No other game that I have played can say that.

Favorite Unique Hero and why?
Kaemon Awa has been my favorite ever since I first got him. Solid base attack with good range, quick release special attack to deal lot's of damage in a hurry as well as deal with pesky rats and counterstrike for those up close and personal encounters. One of the most versatile units in the game. And his sculpt is wicked cool.

Favorite Uncommon Hero and why?
Fen Hydra. Potential for 4 attacks at 5 with height, good defense to keep heads alive and reach makes the Hydra a killer.

Favorite Common Hero and why
Sahaugin Raider. Mostly because there is not a lot of good options.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
Krav. Great anti range squad.

Favorite Common Squad and why?
Zombies. In my opinion the most perfectly executed unit in the game. The slow shamble across the board, zombie onslaught for big attacks and zombies rise again. Awesome in every way.

Favorite Marvel/C3G/C3V Unit and why?
That's an easy one. Spiderman! I love spidy sense. If your d20 is hot, nothing can touch you. Very thematic.

Favorite Special Ability and why?
It's a tie between zombies rise again and counterstrike. There is nothing quite like slowly turning an entire army into an angry horde of hungry zombies. Counterstrike is a great heart stopper. The moment where your opponent whiffs an attack roll and is waiting to see if counterstrike hits back is just too fun.

Spiderman or Venom?
Another easy one. Spiderman! Although Venom is my favorite all time villian.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
Nothing at all. I love the game the way it is.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
This is starting to sound like a broken record, but it is definately the people. I consider myself extremely fortuntate to be part of a great group of scapers here in our region and am proud to call them friends.

Favorite HeroScape moment:
There have been so many. Winning one of Clancampbells tournaments with Taelord in my army. Watching Tom roll nothing less than a 17 for Hive Swarm with his Marro Drones and having him just roll across the board and attack with 9 of them every turn. Playing Peteparkerh's Lord of the Rings scenarios. The four tournament series that we had here a couple of years ago. So many.

Another board game you enjoy and why?
It's not really a board game but I have really been digging Dominion lately. I love the ease of set-up and play and how much just changing a couple of the cards completely changes the game. I'm also really enjoying Battlestar Galactica. A great co-operative game that is as much social as anything. With the right group it is an absolute blast. Unless you are a Cylon every single time

Three true things and one lie about yourself:
I once sported a 16 inch tall mohawk.
I did not get my drivers license till I was 25.
I spent 7 years as an urban missionary.
I played music in 30+ states and 3 countries.

Other interests?
Family. Golf. Reading. World of Warcraft.

Five Fun Favorites

Favorite TV Show:
The Big Bang Theory

Favorite Movie Of All Time:
The Empire Strikes Back

Favorite book:
The Lord of the Rings

Favorite sport:
Professional Football

Favorite food:
Lasagna

What do you plan on teaching since you have graduated from college?
My certification is in elementary education K-6 so anywhere in that range. Ideally I would love to teach 2nd or 3rd grade, but I will take whatever job is presented to me. I just want to teach.

What did Heroscape do for you?
Believe it or not scape meant a lot to me while I was going through some weird stuff a couple of years ago. The simple act of playing a game of scape with friends while letting the cares of life go for a few hours was very cathartic for me.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
There are a ton of people that I would love the opportunity to play and hopefully I will get that opportunity at GenCon this year. If I had to choose just one it would be NYYS so we could talk Red Sox and Patriots the whole time.

What message do you have for the community?
Keep on playing and creating. It is amazing what a dedicated community can achieve.

What Units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?
I don't really follow those but how about Cyprien vs. Kaemon Awa (if that did not already happen).

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
Let's keep it in the region. AliasQTip.

So, scapers 63-67 are all from Maryland. Looks like we have a little dynasty going . Congrats spidysox and AliasQTip! I remember playing you in the first round of the Savage tourney in February spidysox and the first thing that went through my head was, "darn, there goes my shot at winning."

Wow, this one's tough.

I'm going to say the mohawk. There may have been one back there somewhere, but 16 inches seems *awfully* long.

Good interview, spidy, we're looking forward to next time you can visit us in Maryland.

I'll go with mohawk. It seems like I something I would make up if I had to do so. It's also a lot more generic than the others.

I'm going to go the opposite direction here. The mohawk is exactly the sort of crazy that the anticipates we immediately dismiss as a lie, which the reason it is included. I think the lie is the music. It just doesn't fit in with his other interests as much.

I am guessing whatever is false, the # of it is one off, similar to what I did in my interview. I.e. his mohawk was 15 in, he got his drivers license at 24, he spent 6 years as a missionary, or he played in 29 states and/or 2 countries. The mohawk makes most sense at coming shy.

Lol, it's not the mohawk . When I had it I actually took the time to measure it and it was 16 inches in all it's glory.

It's not even the music. I had the opportunity to play in a band in the early 90's and we toured all over the states as well as Germany and Canada (I counted the U.S. as the third country though)

Great interview. Except for the Boston stuff. I'm guessing the 30 state 3 countries.
