June 2011 Louisville Tournament

Posted June 11th, 2011 at 09:37 PM by NecroBlade
Format: 510 points, 12 starting spaces

My army:
210 Braxas
180 GreenBlackscale Warriors x3
120 Kaemon Awa

Boy did that turn out to be a mistake...

Game 1 vs Craig (who had just learned how to play the night before...)

210 Charos
180 Greenscale Warriors x3
120 Raelin 2.0

A mirror-ish-match, and one that I did not like. Charos could rough up both my heroes while easily shrugging off the 'scales. Not much to say about this one, other than I didn't have a good answer to Charos, especially after he picked up the Scarab of Invulnerability (overkill much?). Braxas did gas Raelin on her first try, but that was as good as this game got for me.

Loss, 0-1

Game 2 vs Nathan

160 Shurrak
120 Torin
100 Sir Denrick
070 Knights of Weston
060 Marro Stingers
(there are a lot of players in the area with smaller/shared collections)

Winning Initiative in the first round enabled me to set Braxas up on a bridge, and always have at least one Greenscale able to move up and block the other end. Still, she managed to miss all 3 Breath rolls on the Stinger squad on her first try. Eventually she got them, while Greenscales started fighting Knight and Sir D, who made his way to Braxas. From height and with bonded help she was able to take him out, then, badly wounded (including taking a Coward's Reward wound from a Knight), made or the Glyph of Kelda. Healed up, she rejoined her Lizards on the other side of the river as they took out Torin (not before he hacked a few in half).

Win, 1-1

Game 3 vs John (jschild)

140 Master of the Hunt
140 Werewolf Lord
110 Airborne Elite
100 Krav Maga Agents
020 Marcu Esenwein

Three units Braxas didn't want to see, in the same army?! On top of that, start zones were split, so if the AE dropped early they could also Grenade Greenscales without their Queen's protection. Thankfully they didn't Drop for a few rounds. Braxas gassed the Krav (and Marcu) while 'scales tied up the other heroes. It was looking good until the Werewolf broke free, won Initiative, wounded Braxas, rolled an 11 for Moon Frenzy first roll, and promptly deposited Braxas in Molten Lava. Immediately thereafter, the AE thought it was a good time to rub salt in my wounds, Dropped, and shot the snot out of Kaemon without much more of a fight from my side.

Loss, 1-2

Game 4 vs Jonathan

180 Death Knights x3
180 Taelord
075 Khosumet
050 Iskra Esenwein
025 Dumutef Guard

This was an army I knew Braxas could beat. I was wrong. By the time she was cut to pieces, she and her pals had only killed Snoopy and about half the Death Knights. Luckily, the time of her death was foreseeable so I sent Kaemon Awa to high ground and he kicked it into high gear. He got 5-6 Counter Strike wounds (2 on Taelord, 2 on Iskra, 1-2 Death Knights) and took down the remainder of the opposing team.

Win, 2-2

Game 5 vs David

210 Charos
160 Su-Bak-Na
080 Kelda
060 Marro Stingers

Really?! Charos again, and with Kelda to boot?! Someone snooped my army... Anyway, I had learned my lesson from Game 1 and played around Charos as carefully as possible. First, Braxas picked up the treasure (Scarab, cool, now she might eventually tangle with Charos and maybe even beat him); then she gassed the Stingers (again, taking 2-3 turns to do so...); then she went after Kelda while Greenscales made a mess of the middle of the map to keep his two 'dragons' busy. Kelda took two wounds, disengaged, and went to her own glyph. So Braxas hunted her down a second time, finally taking her out. With Kelda on her way out, Greenscales started beating up SBN. Braxas finished him off, too, then everyone surrounded Charos. When he started Counter Striking Greenscales despite them having Braxas nearby and height, I left him tied up and brought in Kaemon Awa. A series of Quick Releases later and it was all over.

Win, 3-2, 4th place (of 18 ).

I really thought I could have done better, and was disappointed not to face either Steamrolled army (which placed 1st and 2nd), but I'm also glad I didn't face Gordon's Jotun, Krug, Iron Golem, Zetacron team.

That actually sounds like a good placement NecroBlade! But of course, that's where I usually place.

Man, I really wish I was there.

And to think, the army I was going to bring placed 1st and 2nd with other players...

And does that mean that El Diabolo placed 2nd!?!

Yeah, Marcus placed second. It would've been crazy if you'd been there and Steamroller went 1-2-3. We missed you and I wish I would've faced that army. It was good placement considering at our lunch break after Game 3 I was in 13th!?

Just to give an idea how effective the Steamroller was: My army finished 3rd place over-all, a respectable showing of 4-1 out of 18 participants.

Once I was matched up against Marcus, he ended the contest in something like ten minutes, finishing off my Krug on his first order marker at the start of the third round. We just both sat there afterwards, asking each other "So what do you want to do now? We've got 25 minutes to kill."
