Scaper of the Week # 51 - MattserTruckRally

Posted November 30th, 2010 at 08:38 PM by rym
'Scaper of the Week # 51
It seems only fitting that the latest 'Scaper of the Week is a tournament beast. After all, dok picked him, remember?

He doesn't post alot, but we all know who he is anyway. He won the Main Event at Gencon not once, but twice (in 2007 & 2009).

Suffice it to say that in his case, his actions definitely speak as loud, if not louder, than his words.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you:

MattserTruckRally
-Scaper of the Week # 51!-

Who are you?

I am Matt Schaub, no relation to a certain football player down south.

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?

My current avatar is a picture of a monster truck selling chocolate wrapped in bacon for $3. It’s kind of a joke and with the Raelin discussion comparing her to bacon I figured this awesome monster truck would be great.

I came up with my name when I needed to join the forums for NHSD 06’. I made the name so I could use a picture from horror movie Monster Man. The movie is so bad it’s funny. How can you go wrong with the tagline ‘This time the roadkill is human’.

Age:

30

Occupation?

Client Services for business customers for Verizon. It’s a good job and I’m well spoiled at the company I work for.. I’m also a part time college student studying for my bachelors in electrical engineering.

Allegiance and why?

Vydar due to all the cool high tech stuff that the general has. I’m a huge fan of Laglor and Braxas whom I think can be great depending upon certain matchups.

Are you glad there is a 7th general, Valkrill, and why or why not?

I like it. Valkrill’s units are the evilest of evil guys. Mezzodemons, Deathknights, and Deathchasers fit exactly that description. It also gives a brave soul a chance to win a Valkrill General War trophy.

When did you get into HeroScape and why?

My good friend, weesel99, bought the Heroscape Master set after seeing an ad on tv. He told his girlfriend at the time how awesome it was and she responded with "It says ages 8 and up". Lucas came over to my townhouse and played games with ManTrainChooChoo, my brother. I openly mocked them at first and eventually wandered over to the table. After trying it out for ‘just one game’ I was hooked.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?

I like the tactical aspect during the game. Heroscape is a unique game in which order marker management and careful unit placement is the key to success.

Favorite Hero and why?

My favorite hero is Braxas. She was a blast to use during Gencon 2009 and was one of the few times I was able to beat my mortal enemy Cyprien twice.

Favorite Unique Squad and why?

Rechets of Bogdan. I’ve been a big fan of Iskra/Rechets ever since they came out and while the two are a little inconsistent I just love the potential attack range you can get from one turn with these guys.

Favorite Common Squad and why?

Marrden Hounds. I had some good memories of early success with the hounds in big group game settings and their abilities were fun to use. When used with Su-Bak-Na they were more likely to get the 8 movement and combined with their 5 defense gave them ample opportunity to defeat ranged units.

Favorite Special ability and why?

Acid Breath. I like special abilities that ignore defense and can punish those relying to heavily on Raelin to win the game.

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?

The only thing I would change is the use of a possible screen to disguise order marker placement. I believe the designers of the game wanted the order marker process to be secretive so that opponents would be left guessing what you would be doing during a round.

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?

The community. There are so many awesome people in this community whom I’ve had the pleasure of talking to and meeting on the website in real life. I’ve even made a few friends through the website who I game with and hang out with on a regular basis.

Marro Drones or Marro Dividers?

Marro Dividers. I love seeing that one Marro Divider win the game when you get hot at the right time with the d20.

Favorite HeroScape moment:

Playing against MatthiasMaccabe in 2009 in the semifinals at GenCon. I had thought that the match was a lost cause but was at least willing to put up a fight. The match ended up coming down the wire. For a bonus, I also enjoy anytime I demolish ManTrainChooChoo, my brother, in a game.

Another board game you enjoy and why?

There are so many to choose from. I’d recommend Railroad Tycoon. It’s an innocent enough game in which you build railroad tracks and deliver goods from city to city for points. What’s cool about it is that the game is completely cutthroat once you’ve gotten an idea of how it works.

Three true things and one lie about yourself:
  • I've never been outside the country but have traveled as far as Las Vegas within the United States.
  • The company I work for currently bought me a used car a few years ago when my old car was on it’s last limb when it was losing parts on the freeway.
  • My girlfriend and I own a puggle. Our inspiration for buying this breed was after I saw the movie ‘I Love You Man’
  • I have a severe allergies to all things cat and kitten.
Other interests?

I love reading and will usually read anything that has a semi decent recommendation to go with it. Other then that I like poker, board games, video games, and seeing new places.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?

Well I’ve only got one game in against spider_poison and I’d love to play him again. In addition I’ve never played against dok or Jexik and I’d like a chance to battle them one day.

Favorite Army build at 500 points?

Marrden Hounds x 3, Su-Bak-Na, Marro Warriors, Marcu, sit a Marcu

Five Fun Favorites
(because, let's face it, you won't find these things out in the middle of a Competitive armies thread or the What's In An Order Marker discussion )

Favorite TV Show:
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Charlie Kelly is my hero.

Favorite Movie Of All Time:
Well dok picked Shawshank Redemption in the last one so I can’t be a poser here. I’ll go the polar opposite and say ‘No Country for Old Men’ simply for a well told story with one of the most evil villains of all time.

Favorite book:
How to Kill a Mockingbird, kind of cliché but I love a good hero and Atticus Finch is inspiring as a human being.

Favorite sport:
Football, Go Bucks!

Favorite food:
Filet Mignon and pretty much anything my awesome girlfriend makes.

What message do you have for the community?

We’ve all heard the sad news from Wizards of the Coast about Heroscape being discontinued. We’re fortunate to have 13 entire waves, 3 master sets, and a few big sets in between. This is more then enough scape to play for years and years to come so let’s enjoy it!

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?

Really tough choice here. How about a player who has made Day 2 at Gencon 3 times in a row, made 2nd place last year, and is my bitter rival? I nominate ManTrainChooChoo.

Going for your brother, huh?
I think you meant How To Kill A Mockingbird. I doubt your company bought you an used car.

Maybe next year, Matt, or maybe I'll head to an Ohio tourney some time. I've been meaning to do that well... pretty much since I joined the site. But shoot, I've been meaning to play Rÿchean all this time too.

Kyle was so thrilled when he got the chance to play (and win) against you in lightweight after you beat him in that mirror match in 2008.

Come on down! We're just a bunch of losers over here anyway who play ridiculous figures at our random tournies.

Great interview, Matt! The biggest surprise for me was that you're 30 - I still have a few months to go to earn that distinction.

I'm going to go with #1 as the lie.
