FFC #41 - An update which might or might not be irrelevant

TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #41

When I posted my last update, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything I've been learning about character arcs and how to construct them. Since then things have died down a fair bit and I feel like I have a good grasp on the positive character arc, and at least a solid understanding of the flat character arc. I have not looked at the negative character arc yet, but that's planned.

I have, as I said, run up a few bare-bones outlines as tests for working with character arcs. These tests used the Valkyrie, as they appear in Eternity, my final fan fiction series. Specifically, they dealt with their backstories.

I still plan on writing those short stories up and posting them. But there's still some kinks I need to work out in the process, especially with the flat character arc, which I only really began to get a grasp on today.

I had been planning on restarting my Personal Challenge, and that will probably still happen. However, I've been having trouble with the current prompt (combining a Venoc Viper with the word 'Rambo'), and I haven't really been feeling the interest.

This morning however, I was looking over flat character arcs, and got a wave of interest for - of all things - a sequel to HiS. I had tried to write that sequel a few months ago and it just wasn't coming together; I now think that's because I was trying to use the wrong character arc type. Whatever the reason, I think there's a real chance it could come together this time (you can watch the progress in my signature).

Of course, all of this can (and probably will) change. But for now, this is the lineup:
  1. Sequel to His
  2. Personal Challenge Restarted - do as many as needed
  3. Write and post Valkyrie backstories
  4. Get to work on Eternity
By the time I get to the Valkyrie, I should be comfortable with my character arc process. The Valkyrie will be the final test to make sure everything works, and works in a series of sorts. If the processes pass, it will be on to Eternity.

Until then, stay tuned.

I'm glad that not one but two of my requests are getting worked on. Good luck with that Viper story (also watch First Blood if you haven't yet - it'll help you immensely.)

@TheAverageFan After much deliberation, and several hours spent staring at the screen with a furrowed brow, it now seems very likely that the sequel to HiS will not be coming. The best reason I can give is that it is impossible for Dan to ever win. Not escape, but actually win. There is a difference. I can't say much more without negating the ending of HiS, or the whole first part.

That being said, outlining the sequel (as far as I got) did allow me to find some kinks in the character arc process which I otherwise would not have, and smooth out the flat character arc much more.

I still have nothing on the Rambo story, so I believe I'm going to try out the character arcs on the Valkyrie backstories, since a fleshed out flat arc was what I was missing. I'm first going to take a closer look at the Dan sequel though, because I absolutely love the feel of the story, and I want to know why.

I'll keep you updated.

EDIT: Looks like I have a solid grasp on these character arcs: the Valkyrie prequels are practically writing themselves.
