Wave D2 preview

Posted June 12th, 2010 at 02:26 PM by theGuru
Welcome back everyone!

Well we are a bit ahead of our planned schedule for the previews for this wave. I hope there isn’t too much disappointment that by the time we’re done showing you the whole wave, it’s still going to be over a month till you can get your hands on it. Somehow, I think you guys can handle it!

First, a quick overview on Heroscape D2: Warriors of Eberron!

Warriors of Eberron is a standard expansion set containing 4 packs. 3 packs contain Common/Uncommon figures, and 1 pack contains Unique figures. All 4 packs contain a brand new Treasure Glyph for use on your battlefields.

Pack 1: Common Pack
Golem and Wyrmlings
Includes one Uncommon Iron Golem, 4 Common Wyrmlings, and a Treasure Glyph.

Pack 2: Common Pack
Veterans of the Last War
Includes one Uncommon Werewolf Lord, 3 Lycanthrope Markers one Uncommon Mind Flayer Mastermind, one Common Squad of 3 Warforged Soldiers, and one Treasure Glyph

Pack 3: Common Pack
Ogre and Goblins
Includes one Uncommon Ogre Warhulk, one squad of 4 Goblin Cutters, and one Treasure Glyph.

Pack 4: Unique Pack
Heroes of Khorvaire
Includes 5 Unique Heroes. A Warforged Wizard, a Human Shadow Assassin, 2 Shadow tiles, a Dragonborn Paladin, a Hobgoblin Sorcerer, and a Fire Giant as well as one Treasure Glyph.

I would also mention that we’ve worked on a new Dungeon Adventure for release along with Wave 2, but based on how long the River of Blood has taken to go online, I’ll save my breath on that one. On a positive note, they just took pictures of the battlefields for the River of Blood, so I would expect it online shortly. And once the River of Blood concludes, you guys will be chomping at the bit to find out how the story continues in the next Dungeon Adventure!

New Bases:
Before we get started, I wanted to address something that the preview images will reveal. As some of you have noted, the bases on the small/medium figures seem like they are new. They are in fact new, smaller bases. This was done for a few different reasons. While changing the bases has a very minimal gameplay effect and a minor aesthetic change, WOTC decided to do it to expand the market and draw in more miniature game players. Those of us that play D&D and other RPG/Mini games will notice that with the new smaller bases, we don’t have to cut the figures off of the bases to allow them to fit on our tabletop map for our weekly RPG. By getting new players interested in the Heroscape minis, they will be able to make the game grow in tough economic times. The bases are made of the same hard plastic as current Heroscape bases, and they do have the normal decal on top as you can see in some of the images below.

I’ll be honest. At first, I was upset. As both a designer, and a fan, I didn’t like the change. However, once I took a second to take a step back and really think about how this will promote further purchases of the game to help the brand grow, and once I had a chance to take a look at the finished product, I’m OK with the change. I can assure you that all figures do fit on the ladder. While they may not have as much rotation as the older bases, they fit fine. And as you can see from some of the comparison images below, they basically sheared off the taper on the side, and cut the surface size by a millimeter or two.

I can tell you that when previous Heroscape figures that were molded for the larger bases are re-released, they will still have the larger bases. I’m sure many of you will be immediately put off by this move, but I hope as you see these figures in person, and play on boards with them, you’ll realize that there is a very minimal impact on our game. And hopefully this will allow the brand to continue to grow and allow us to continue bringing out new and innovative figures (just wait till you see what we have in store for Wave D3!)

But that’s a story for a later week. Onto D2 for now!

Iron Golem

The Iron Golem lumbers across the battlefield, taking out heroes like it’s his job. Try to throw special attacks at him, and he wont even flinch as he walks up to you and pounds you into the ground. At 3 life, he’s easy to take down, as long as you can get through his 6 defense….

Wyrmlings

Like the Elementals in wave D1, we wanted to take the Wyrmlings and make them more than just Common Hero filler. We wanted to give them the ability to be a pseudo squad. We had many different incarnations of their Wyrmling bonding, but in the end, their final version is both versatile, and exciting, whether you have a group of all 1 color Wyrmlings, or a mix of different Wyrmlings.

Treasure Glyph
While I don’t have an image of the card yet, the Treasure Glyph included in the Golem and Wyrmlings pack is the Bracers of Teleportation!

Bracers of Teleportation
Temporary Treasure Glyph
This figure may use these bracers before moving. Instead of moving normally, you may place this figure on any same-level space(s) within 10 spaces of its current location. If this figure is engaged when it starts to teleport, it will not take any leaving engagement attacks.

The Iron Golem is going to be a very interesting figure. Very tough against the ever-expanding list of special attacks.

His biggest disadvantage - only one attack.

Interesting. All the figures look great, for sure. I can't decide which Wyrmling I like the best, though I'm pretty sure I like Red the least. White is nice with 4 defense, and their special attack is better than Blue's, though Blue has the higher normal attack. Having some Black in there will be nice to bypass defense, but I think I'd probably go White/Blue.

Iron Golem is pretty cool - I can certainly say that Vydar's own Major Q9 will be crapping his metal shell if he sees one of these things charging towards him.

These guys are awesome! I really like the theme with the wyrmlings (like the big dragons, but smaller). The Iron Giant is my favorite, though. Defense against specials=fun.

Love the wyrmlings! Can't wait to have baby Nilfhiems running around. The Iron Golem looks like a BEAST in dungeon crawling. Can't wait to try them out!
