'Scaper of the Month #85

Posted April 5th, 2013 at 09:22 AM by White Knight

'Scaper-of-the-Month #85 is...

WHITE KNIGHT

Congratulations!

PROFILE:

Who are you, really?
Art Schlauch
My wife is Amy.
My children are Jenny (16), Wittiker (14), and Marcus (12)

How old are you?
44

What is your occupation?
Aerospace design engineer, part time youth pastor.

What other interests do you have?
Teaching at church, coaching my kids soccer/baseball teams, canoeing, hiking, birdwatching/photography with my daughter, helping with science fair, inventing, traveling, Creation Science

What’s another board game you enjoy and why?
Pictionary—my whole family enjoys trying to communicate with pictures. But mostly I prefer playing video games with my boys.
I used be obsessed with Dungeons and Dragons back in high school and college.

Who, or what, is you avatar and how did you come up with your username?
White Knight.

Back in college I would often see some kids wearing all black with black lipstick and eye shadow—the precursors of Goth. I sometimes would wear an all-white sweatsuit outfit to counter them.

I’ve always wanted to be that hero who rides in on a white horse to help save the day.

HEROSCAPE:

When and how did you first get into HeroScape?
September 2009. We bought a RotV set at a garage sale for $5 and immediately fell in love with Heroscape.

What is your favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
The simplicity and excitement of the game. And also how easy it is to make customs that anyone can quickly use. There is so much variety, but yet it is still so easy to pick up and play.

To whom is your allegiance and why?
Jandar. As Robert the Bruce said in Braveheart: “I will never be on the wrong side again.”

Who are your favorite heroes and why?
Unique: Krug. It really bothers me when a hero I control gets 1 attack in a turn and can’t even take out a squad figure. Krug doesn’t have that problem.
Uncommon: Fen Hydra. 4 attacks of 4.
Common: Fire Elemental. I had fun playtesting the Fire Elements with my small elemental squad for Auggie’s small fire elemental squad contest.

What are your favorite squads and why?
Unique: Tarn Vikings. While playtesting Gastly for Project Pokemon, a cursed Jotun was trudging around the map chasing my Tarn (and gaining a wound at the end of each round). Finally, my last Tarn Viking had nowhere to run, so he charged at Jotun and got 2 skulls to 0 shields—taking out the giant and winning the game!
Common: Omnicron Snipers. They look awesome, and I love their abilities. They are hard to position, but their double skulls can be powerful.

What is your favorite Special Ability and why?
Disengage. One of my favorite parts of Heroscape is the terrain/height aspect. I don’t like it when figures become engaged and just sit there and slug it out. Disengage allows lots of movement and repositioning.

What is your favorite map and why?
For BoV maps, I like Ticalla Jungle. I really like the look with the jungle plants.

My other two favorite maps are personal ones: the Pallet Town Sea Cave Training Gym 8 and Glacier Creek. I love the look of both of them, and I love bridges and height.

What can you tell us about Legends of 'Scape?
Legends of Scape is a simplified role-playing game similar to Dungeons and Dragons using the Heroscape battle system mechanics (terrain, height, movement, attacks/defense, special attacks and abilities). It is similar to kaiyu’s Heroes of Scape (RPG) system—with more of a D&D roleplaying and spell type of feel.

Legends of Scape characters can be used in a Classic Scape game, but they were made to be used in a campaign where they gain experience and levels. In the same way, Classic Scape cards can be directly used in Legends of Scape.

The only combat different between Classic Scape and Legends of Scape is the elimination of order markers—in Legends of Scape, all characters and squads roll for initiative independently and take a turn based on their initiative (and each gets 3 turns per round). Bonding abilities are not used because they mess with this mechanic.

Here is a sample level 1 character I created for Legends of Scape:

You can see how it could be used against Classic Scape figures. Note that his weapon and armor bonuses have already been reflected in his stats (and changing weapons or armor would alter his stats). There are reminder cards for special abilities such as Spiral Slash Special Attack.

COMMUNITY:

What do you enjoy most about HeroScapers.com?
Working together on projects. The best ideas are usually come up during collaboration. That’s why I love Project Pokemon and why I joined HoME, HoSS, and Potterscape.

Describe your favorite HeroScape moment.
Some of the moments I remember most were the sad moments (at the time) when one of my sons ended up in tears—like when a Tyrannosaurus Rex took out Marcus’ Jotun with one awesome attack (and a whiff on defense).

My favorite moment, though, would probably be when my son, Marcus, and I were playing with dalu’s Orogoth figure. Orogoth was stomping through my Goblin Cutters, wrecking havoc and decimating my army. But my custom goblin hero, Glurk (80 points, 4 life, 4 attack, 2 defense), successfully defended against the 200 point demon and finished Orogoth off in two turns.

Marcus still won, but seeing the tiny goblin take out the hulking demon was great!

Is there any member of HeroScapers.com you’d really like to play against?
Someday I’d like play against mac122 since we’ve worked together on so many projects. Hopefully, with his advanced age , he won’t get too upset at losing.

Pokémon and HeroScape, how does that work?
The Pokemon of Project Pokemon were designed able to be played seamlessly in a Classic Scape game.

The main rule change when playing Pokescape by itself is the Weakness/Resistance/No Effect rule:

Pokemon roll 1 less defense die against an attack if they are weak against that type of attack.

Pokemon roll 1 more defense die against an attack if they are resistant to that type of attack.

Pokemon take no damage or affects from an attack if they are “not affected” by that type of attack.

I really love Pokescape. It’s very similar to the Pokemon gameboy games except that you can run around a 3-D battlefield using the Heroscape rules! I really think that Hasbro could have made a lot of money putting out a Pokemon specific Heroscape game like the Marvel game. They already make Pokemon toys, so it wouldn’t even be a licensing issue.

UNIT DEBATE:

Which unit would you say is better: Marro Stingers or Blastatrons?
I don’t have any Gladatrons, and I have a lot of Stingers, so I like the Stingers. A common squad with 3 attacks of 3 (or 4) at 5 range is just incredible. If I’m playing against a newcomer, I often suggest they use a Stinger army. It’s just so simple and powerful.

What two units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?
Like mac, I haven't been following it.

LIE DETECTOR:

Tell us two true things about yourself and one lie.
1. I’ve flown on the KC-135 Vomit Comet and experienced zero-g.
2. I’ve been in a submarine while it was moving underwater in the Gulf of Mexico.
3. I’ve worked on top of a mockup of the Orion space capsule while it was floating in the NASA Neutral Buoyancy Facility swimming pool.

THREE FUN FAVORITES:

Favorite band:
Casting Crowns

Favorite book:
Lord of the Rings

Favorite TV show:
Big Bang Theory. Or Once Upon a Time.

CLOSING:

What message do you have for the ‘Scaper community?
Keep up the customs work, and keep playtesting. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in theoryscaping that I forget to play the game. The real fun comes when I actually get to sit down and try out the customs we’ve created.

Whom do you pick for the next ‘Scaper of the Week?
HS2010, he has really done a lot for HoSS.

Glad to see this in its own blog post. Is that a shiny new SotM logo as well?
