Wave 9 Influence

Posted May 30th, 2009 at 02:30 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

With most of it previewed, and much delightful speculation and discussion by the pundits, it seems clear that Wave 9 has blunted the soulborg scourge, and given us some new figures with interesting powers, all successfully designed to enrich the game without changing its essential balance (Hear! Hear! ). Chas (He Who Owns Almost All) will, of course, be shortly in possession of most, if not all, of Wave 9, and I can expect to face them, perhaps as soon as the coming week (certainly in proxie form). As for myself, the three sets of Romans I ordered came today!

I will not, however, be purchasing anything from Wave 9 in the near future, unless I am blown away by the new Ninja or otherwise overwhelmed by the as yet unrevealed figures in the wave (or win the lottery). As it stands, Wave 9 makes my relatively retro army philosophy even more viable.

At the core are the Romans. They are cheap and have the best variety of bonding heroes (in...

Pilgrim's Progress - A Road Runs Through It

Well met!

This Wednsday, I am going to Chas's home to play a 750 point version of the above-named scenario I made up recently. The terrain consists of a road (duh) running from one end of his large board to the other (lengthwise), with glyphs at the ends. A "Monk" is in the center. The idea is that it must walk on the road until it reaches one of the players' glyphs, at which point that player wins. The "Monk" is controlled each round by the last player to have had an un-engaged figure adjacent to it.

This is the first time I am playing exclusively with my own figures. I have no multiple commons, and am missing, of course, many significant squads and heroes. I am proud of the army I have created for this scenario. (It needs a name for trash talking purposes.)

80 Raelin
100 Kozuke Samurai
110 Brunak
120 Kaemon Awa
130 Kee-Mo-Shi
210 Braxas
750

In addition, we will play a second...

500 Point Unique Hero Army (for GenCon sim)

Posted April 30th, 2009 at 02:13 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

Having acquired a small hoard of figures, and having no multiples of common squads, I've decided to simulate the GenCon Unique Hero conflict when Chas and I meet next week. I am seeking advice, of course. I like Brunak carrying Raelin, also, the thought of using Finn and Thorgrim as blockers, but is there a viable combination of figures using either or both of these combinations? In the mean time, I thought I might go with the following:

45 Sonja
80 Raelin
150 Cyprien
185 Nilf
500

My New (at least to me) Figures - Now what?!

Posted April 26th, 2009 at 02:46 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

My friend, Chas, has arranged for me to acquire a Heroscape Hoard for a relative song. I won't know 'til Wednsday exactly what I have. As I understand it, I will have at least 1 of just about everything. I laud his kindness and generosity yet again herein and ask you all to celebrate with me as I become a True Heroscaper (with the possession of my own figures)!

Given the above, I'd appreciate any advice with creating a competitive army using only 1 of any common squad. I would like to build it around a core of 1 x Arrow Gruts, Mimring and Krug. For example, at 540 points, I could add 1 x KoW, Thorgrim and Finn.

Humbly Grateful

Cavalry Redeux - What to Do, What to Do, What to Do!?

Posted April 13th, 2009 at 11:10 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

My friend Chas, the Technically Challenged, has been trying for days to become a Site Supporter and start his own Blog. After numerous back-and-forth emails, I called him on the telephone, and walked him through the process. Then we spent a couple hours talking 'scape.

During this conversation, the subject of the new "braves" came up, and we wished for Native American horse archers. This naturally led us to the problems associated with mounted troops in Heroscape thus far, and what might be done about them.

I suggested giving cavalry squad units 2 lives. Chas thought it such a good idea that it deserved its own Blog entry. (I did some research in the Forum, and found a House Rule to help the Templars by making "dismiss the rabble" apply to ranged attacks.) Chas suggested that Swog Riders were supposed to be horrifying Wolf Riders as in LoTR and should be similarly augmented. I am sure the idea of adding to cavalry...
